10. november 2003 Oresund Database. A short guide First window In the first window you can: • • • • • open the Oresund Database register as user of Oresund Database (to be kept informed of any news in the database) print the present guide print the guide for the pc-axis program1 download the pc-axis program Selection of subject area and table When you have opened the Oresund Database a window showing an overview of the different subject areas appears. When a subject area is selected an overview of the tables (matrices) available within the subject area in question appears. For each table there is information on the variables contained in the table and the number of values of each variable. Downloading or selection? When a table is selected you can either download the entire table matrix in pc-axis format or select parts of the table matrix before further processing. Downloading Downloading in pc-axis format is only possible if the pc-axis programme is installed on your PC, see above. Before downloading it may be useful to enter the selection window to obtain further information on the table in question, see below. Selection window Supplementary information In the selection window it is possible: • to gain access to supplementary information on the table and subject area • to select the variable values as required for your table. In the window under the table title the following line is displayed: ,QIRUPDWLRQ ,QIRUPDWLRQ)RRWQRWHV'HWDLOHGLQIRUPDWLRQ Click on ,QIRUPDWLRQ, and the contact persons responsible at SCB and DST for the subject area in question are shown. Click on )RRWQRWHV, a further description of the statistics in question appears, if a description is required. 1 PC-AXIS is a program suitable for statistical processing of data available in what is called a pcaxis file format. Data in this format can be downloaded from the Oresund Database and from the databases of the Nordic statistical institutes. http://exc/exchange/jaf/inbox/pdf-dokumenter i farve.eml/user_manual.doc Click on 'HWDLOHG LQIRUPDWLRQ2, a window appears showing partly translations of the table name and some variable values, from English into respectively Danish and Swedish, and containing partly links to DSt’s and SCB’s descriptions (called Declarations of Contents) of the national statistics for the subject area in question. Selection of variables and variable values The selection window contains roll-up shafts for each variable. In the roll-up shafts it is possible to select the values required for your table. Technical guide (in English) on selection is obtained by clicking on 0DUNLQJWLSV In some tables it is possible to replace the value set of a variable. When replacement is possible the variable name is displayed in a roll-up shaft. The set of values required by you is selected in the roll-up shaft. (For example, the variable “age” may contain the following value sets: 1-year intervals, 5-year intervals and 10-year intervals). You may also decide to delete (eliminate) some variables. However, some variables cannot be deleted. Unfortunately, it does not appear from the window which variables can be deleted and which cannot be deleted. Frequently, it is impossible to delete variables concerning geography (e.g. “municipality”), and it is NEVER possible to delete the variable “reference date”. Please note that no more than 1,000 rows and 50 columns can be selected. The number of rows and columns that you have selected is shown in the window. Display of table Having selected the variables and variable values required by you, press the button window: Continue . The table and a number of icons will then appear in the Click on this icon and the layout of the table is changed. Change of table layout Applying the above icons you can change the order of the rows and columns in the table (the first 2 icons – anticlockwise and clockwise) or you can, if required, freely determine the order of the rows and columns (the last icon). Changes in the table of this type are called pivots. Processing of the table Applying the icon you can sum up the variables (for example, ”men” and ”women” obtaining a total for ”sex”). All variables can be summed up, but a summation can only take place one at a time. Applying the icon you can delete the table rows which contain only “zeroes”. Downloading selected table If you want to undertake further processing of the selected table, the table can be downloaded in different formats: 2 Some Internet browsers cannot gain access to this window. 2 PC-Axis format. Can only be applied if you have installed the program PC-AXIS on your PC, see above. Excel-format. Can only be applied if you have installed the program Microsoft Excel on your PC. Text file. Length of line and page must be selected. Flat file with delimiter (tabulator, comma, semicolon, space) – either with heading or without heading. HTML-file, dBase file, Lotus wk1 file. Graphs and maps It is possible to present the selected table in the form of a graph. The most common graph types can be selected (column charts, lines, etc.). The graph can be printed and/or saved (in GIF or BMP format). It is also possible to illustrate the statistical information in a map of Oresund, with a distribution of municipalities. Other geographical distributions cannot be used. The type of graphing applied is ”choroplet”, i.e. the geographical units appear in different shades, depending on the size of the statistical variable. (The higher the value, the darker the shade). The processed map can be printed and/or saved. Please note that not all tables can be used in processing the map of Oresund.
