How To Play the Point of View Card Game

What?
The point of view game is a good way to help students not only analyze information, but also how
to understand point of view and historical context.
When?
How?
The Point of View Card Game is an interactive strategy where students work in team to listen to
the words from the past, figure out who is talking any why they feel that way.
Why?
How To Play the Point of View Card Game
Before class, prepare the following:
2-3 class sets of cards sets A-J (Cut and stacked)
1 copy of the Point of View Card Game GO per student.
Divide students into quads.
Have students self-assign themselves a letter from A-D. (No repeats)
Explain to students that they are going to explore the voices from the past and use their skills
to figure out:
When this conversation occurred.
What the topic is.
Who would feel the same way.
What the different points of view on the topic are.
Distribute 1 copy of the Point of View Card Game GO to each student.
Explain to students that they are going to work as a team.
Explain to students they are going to each get a card and they are to figure out who, what,
when, and what the different points of view are. (and what the speakers are talking about)
Distribute 1 set of cards to each team.
Explain to students that whoever is “A” in their group will be responsible only for “Speaker A”
and student “B” will be responsible only for “Speaker B”…
Have students read the information from their assigned speaker.
When students have had sufficient time, have “Speaker A” read their point of view to the rest
of their team from their card. When finished, continue the reading cycle for the remaining
speakers.
Once all speakers have had an opportunity to share, have teams figure out when their
conversation occurred and record the year/era in the first column labeled “Topic”.
Have teams figure out the topic of conversation and record their response in the first column
labeled “Topic”.
For the remaining columns, have students record the point of view on the topic for their
speaker.
Have students identify the supporters and/or detractors.
Option A: Have students present their information by using sentence stems such as, “Our
topic was ____________ which occurred during ___________.” and “Speaker A thought…
Speaker B thought…”
Option B: Have teams exchange cards and repeat the process.
Option C: Have students pick a topic from their studies and create their own conversation
cards. (See the blank template at the end of this section)
The Point of View Card Game can be used at the end of a Unit of Study or when conducting
review. The point of view “speakers” came from released New York Regents Exams
