Coaching Staff Gail Macklin HEAD COACH SOUTHERN MISS, ‘01 G ail Macklin, one of the youngest head coaches in the nation, enters her second year at the helm of Southern Miss soccer after a 5-11-1 first season. Macklin was hired as the school’s third soccer coach on June 29, 2004, replacing Matt Clark, who compiled a 33-32-4 record in four years as head coach. Macklin, is no stranger to Southern Miss women’s soccer. She has been a part of the program since its creation in 1997, first as a player, then as a volunteer coach, assistant coach and now head coach. With the transition phase to her system behind her, Macklin can now further implement her vision for the Lady Eagle soccer program. When women’s soccer was started at Southern Miss in 1997, Macklin was a member of the inaugural team, enjoying a successful playing career. The first Southern Miss team finished 11-5, setting the school record in wins and fewest losses. As a senior, she led the team to a 10-9 mark as it finished with the second-highest win total in school history. In 1997, Macklin was selected first-team Soccer Buzz All-National for firstyear programs. She was a three-year letterwinner during her career, playing in 49 matches with 32 starts, primarily as a midfielder, recording two goals, eight assists and 12 points. She ranks ninth in school history with eight assists and is tied with Associate Head Coach Claire Rea for fifth on the school’s single season total in assists, recording five in 1997. She is also tied for the school’s singleseason lead in matches played, with 20 in 1999. In addition to her playing career at Southern Miss, Macklin also played one season at East Antrim Institution. Macklin was also a member of the Northern Ireland national team for six years, helping the team advance to the cup finals from 1992-96. She also played on the Irish National team in 2004 and played on the Post Office United Club team from 1992-97, helping the team to a county championship. Following her collegiate career, Macklin spent the 2000 and 2001 seasons as a volunteer coach helping the team to back-to-back winning records, 9-8 and 9-7, respectively. Macklin joined Clark’s staff full time in 2002, and helped the team attain its third nine-win season with a 9-7-3 mark in 2003. Macklin also has coached with the Mississippi Olympic Development Program and with the Hattiesburg Youth Soccer Association. She graduated from Southern Miss in December 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in sport administration and human performance. She has been associated with the Lady Eagle program for six of the eight years the program has been in exis- tence, first as a player and now as an associate head coach. Rea enters her third season on the coaching staff in 2005, first joining Matt Clark’s staff in the 2003 season. A teammate of Macklin in 1998 and 1999, she was a four-year letterwinner during her playing career from 1998-2001. Rea played in 61 matches with 46 starts in her career, finishing with four goals, 10 assists and18 points. She finished her career tied for fourth overall in alltime assists with 10. Rea is also tied with Head Coach Gail Macklin for fifth on the school’s single season total in assists, recording five in 2001 and also recording the seventh best single-season total in assists per match with 0.31 that same season. She is also tied for the school’s single-season lead in most starts in a season with 18 in 1998. In addition to her Lady Eagle playing days, Rea was a member of the Belfast United team that won a Division I championship and competed on the Irish National Team in 2004. Rea is native of Belfast, Northern Ireland. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport administration from Southern Miss in 2001 and earned her master’s degree in sport administration in 2004. She is the daughter of Geraldine and the late Drew Rea. 2005 Southern Miss Soccer Media Guide Coaching Staff SUPPORT STAFF Dolores Deasley Brandy Yeik Archie Beaty Terri Minor Josh Bird ASSISTANT COACH HOFSTRA, ‘04 Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer Student Assistant Student Assistant Manager Dolores Deasley enters her second year as a member of the coaching staff in 2005, following her decorated playing career at Hofstra University. Deasley was a four-year letterwinner at Hofstra University. She finished her career with nine goals, four assists and 22 points. She played in 72 matches in her career with 70 starts, helping Hofstra to a 4721-9 mark in her playing career. As a senior in 2003, Deasley was named the Colonial Athletic Association’s Defensive Player of the Year and first-team All-CAA, also garnering AllAmerican third-team honors by Soccer Buzz Magazine. She also was named first-team all-region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of American and Soccer Buzz Magazine. Deasley, a 2003-04 recipient of the Dr. Nathalie J. Smith Award, given to Hofstra’s Female Student Athlete of the Year, helped Hofstra allow only nine goals in 2003, which tied with Utah for the best in the nation. She helped Hofstra to a 13-3-3 record and the regular-season CAA championship title. In 2002, she helped Hofstra to a 14-5-1 record, earning All-CAA second-team honors and earning second-team All-America East honors as a sophomore in 2001, as the team finished 8-8-3. As a freshman, she earned second-team All-America East conference honors, also earning America East All-Rookie honors, as the squad finished 12-5-2. Deasley played for the New York Magic of the United Soccer W-League in 2005, played on the Long Island Lady Riders of the United Soccer W-League in 2003 and 2004 and has been a member of the Irish National Soccer Team since 1999. During her high school career at St. Columba’s School in Ireland, she was named the Irish Under-18 National Player of the Year, the Donecal Player of the Year and the St. Columba’s Player of the Year. She also made an international appearance against the U.S. National team. She coached at the Elite Soccer Camps in 2004, while also serving as an assistant coach for the Under-14 team in the Long Island Soccer League. Deasley is a native of Drumkeen, Ireland, and has five brothers and four sisters. She is the daughter of William and Bridget Deasley and completed her bachelor of science degree in education from Hofstra in 2004.
