Course Description: Discussion of immediate problems in student teaching with emphasis on children’s growth and development. Prepare students for edTPA. Remediate student teachers that do not pass. GOAL: To prepare student teachers to become effective teachers who can meet the diverse needs of their students. OBJECTIVES: 1. Creating and maintaining effective environments for student learning Work with your guide teacher (GT) and university supervisor (US), learning from their expertise and experience. Meet the academic, social, and emotional needs of your students to the best of your ability. 2. Developing as a professional educator Conduct yourself professionally at all times, as well as participate fully. Be a role model to all, think about how the students, parents, and staff perceive you. Share your experience and knowledge with peers and offer peer guidance to your classmates. Complete all assignments ON TIME for your courses and student teaching. Save your welcome letter, lesson plans, your charts, examples of student work (originals or samples) to put in your professional portfolio (An assignment for TE 961 in spring 2017.) Complete a minimum of 3 observation lessons, reflect with your US and GT and keep a copy of all of your evaluations. 3. Engaging and Supporting Students in Learning Engage every student. Make the content accessible, scaffold. Carefully consider your ELL and special needs students. Kronowitz Copyright 2012 *Laptop or tablet *San Diego State has several computer labs for your use. They have computers, scanners, printers, programs, and staff to help you. They also have The Writing Center available in person or online. Teacher Education Policy: You must enroll in TE 965 Student Teaching for 8 units by the Registration Deadline for adding classes or you will not be allowed to student teach and you may be dropped from the program. The university provides funds for students who are listed on the class roster by the deadline date. Therefore, you need to be registered so there will be funds to pay the stipend to your guide teacher and to pay your university supervisor. Course Structure and Conduct Course Expectations and Grading Policy: EXPECTATIONS: 1. Check your email and Blackboard frequently, at least three times a week. Important information in regards to your student teaching assignment, your credential, and your work in general will be communicated via email. You are expected to check your email on a regular basis and you will be held responsible for information communicated via email. I too will check my email frequently. Seminar, office hours, and email are the best line of communication. I encourage the buddy system where two or more of you exchange phone numbers and can alert each other and check in with each other about assignments, due dates, etc. 2. You are expected to read the information on Blackboard and you are responsible for it. 3. Back up/SAVE your assignments. It is a safe policy to make a copy of every assignment you turn in to any instructor. We encourage this practice, including scanning all hand-made work and storing all electronic work on an external backup system. Also, save your TB test results, CPR certificate, RICA score, and edTPA score. 4. No late assignments will be accepted, unless prior arrangements have been made with the instructor and it is due to extenuating circumstances. Homework should be completed prior to the start of class, 3:45, not during class. No incomplete assignments are accepted. 5. You must maintain a B average and earn at least a C in all your courses. You must also pass TE 960 Basic Student Teaching Seminar and TE 965 Basic Student Teaching for the team leader to recommend you for a credential. This letter should introduce you to the students and their families. The letter may have information about what your degree is, what college you graduated from, what relevant experience you have with children, your interests, a photo. Be creative. Be sure to proof this; there should be NO grammatical or spelling errors. Submit on Bb. 3. SELF REFLECTION: 20 points Due Monday, October 17, 2016. After your first observation lesson, talk to your GT and US. Then self reflect. What went well? What would you do differently next time? Was your assessment effective? How did you differentiate the lesson? What would you teach next? Submit on Bb. 4. FALL LESSON: 20 points Due Monday, November 28, 2016. Share with the class an exciting lesson that you taught about fall, Halloween, or Thanksgiving. Be sure to state the CCSS/NGSS/ELD standard(s) in your lesson plan and share student work. Submit the lesson on Bb. 5. DECEMBER HOLIDAY/ CULTURAL LESSON: 20 points Due Monday, December 12, 2016. Share with the class an exciting lesson that you taught about a December holiday or a cultural lesson Be sure to state the CCSS/NGSS/ELD standard(s) in your lesson plan and share student work. Submit the lesson on Bb. SDSU Policies and Guidelines: Statement on Cheating and Plagiarism: Cheating is the actual or attempted practice of fraudulent or deceptive acts for the purpose of improving one’s grade or obtaining course credit; such acts also include assisting another student to do so. Typically, such acts occur in relation to examinations. However, it is the intent of this definition that the term ‘cheating’ not be limited to examination situations only, but that it include any and all actions by a student that are intended to gain an unearned academic advantage by fraudulent or deceptive means. Plagiarism is a specific form of cheating which consists of the misuse of the published and/or unpublished works of others by misrepresenting the material (i.e., their intellectual property) so used as one’s own work. Penalties for cheating and plagiarism range from a 0 or F on a particular assignment, through an F for the course, to expulsion from the University.
