AldoRustichini,professorattheDepartmentofEconomicsoftheUniversityofMinnesota,
studiesthewayintelligenceshapesoureconomicandsocialbehaviour.Thistopicisinfactpartof
abroaderandmoreambitiousresearchprojectthataimstoidentifythebiologicalbasesof
economics.Rustichiniwillbetalkingaboutallthis(hispastandfutureresearch)atthenextSISSA
colloquiumscheduledforOctober12at3.00pminthemainlecturehalloftheInternational
SchoolforAdvancedStudies(SISSA)ofTrieste.Theeventisfree,opentoall,andwillbeheldin
English.
Experimentsinthefieldofgametheoryhaveshownthat–providedthereisapossibilityof
cooperatingandthatcooperationisrewarding–peoplewithhigherintelligencequotients(IQ)in
thelongtermtendtoseekthealmostcompletecollaborationofothers.Bycontrast,ingroups
formedbypeoplewithlowerIQ,cooperationtendstodeclineovertime.Thesedifferencesshow
thatintelligencehasaneffectonsocialandeconomicbehaviour(thegamesproposedinvolved
gainingorlosingsumsofmoney),explainsAldoRustichini,professorattheUniversityof
Minnesotaandauthoroftheseexperiments.
Rustichiniisworkingonaresearchprojectthataimstoidentifytheeffectofintelligenceonsocial
andeconomichumanbehaviour,whichinturnispartofalargerresearchprogramme
investigatingthebiologicalbasesofeconomics.TheworkcarriedoutbyRustichiniandcolleagues
ismultidisciplinaryandbasedonthejointanalysisofalargebodyofbehavioural,geneticand
brainimagingdata.
AtthenextmeetingintheSISSAColloquiaseries,Rustichiniwillbepresentingwhathasbeen
donesofaraswellasthefuturedevelopmentsoftheproject.Theeventisopentothepublicand
willbeheldinEnglish.
Bio
AldoRustichiniisprofessorofEconomicsattheUniversityofMinnesotaandhashadnumerous
appointmentsatinternationaluniversitiesandresearchcentres(AT&TBellLaboratories,
NorthwesternUniversity,NewYorkUniversity,UniversitéCatholiquedeLouvain,Cambridge
Universityandmanyothers).Rustichinihasauthoredmorethan100scientificpaperspublishedin
internationaljournals,andhisresearchinterestsincludedecisiontheory,thestudyofeconomic
behaviour,politicaleconomy,generaleconomicequilibriumtheory,tonamebutafew.Rustichini
isalsoassociateeditorofjournalssuchasPlosOne,GamesandEconomicBehaviorandthe
JournalofMathematicalEconomics.
