Well over 200 young players from 12 clubs arrived at Swaffham

Well over 200 young players from 12 clubs arrived at Swaffham RUFC on Sunday morning for the
annual Leicester Tigers Prima Cup competition, where the winners can emulate their heroes on the
Welford Road ground prior to the Tiger’s playing Clermont Auvergne in the Heineken Cup on the 17
December. This is an Under 10s competition run by Leicester Tigers and is now in its 7th year at the club.
This was the regional heat for the competition, which the Tigers run across the country.
At Swaffham 12 teams were split into two leagues and played those teams in their league with the winners of
both leagues securing a place in the next round of the competition.
As ever the level of rugby on display was excellent with the young players showcasing their skills in front of
large crowds. West Norfolk travelled with a talented squad with high expectations. West ended up winning all 5
games, scoring 17 tries and only conceding 2 tries in the day. Beating teams such as Swaffham, Chelmsford,
Lowestoft & Yarmouth, Woodbridge and Diss was hugely challenging but the young team were dominant.
Ben Youngs, Leicester’s scrum half and a regular England player arrived to meet the players. Ben was one of
the players to attend the first Tigers summer course run at Swaffham 10 years ago.He spent time chatting with
the players and signing autographs for them and was hugely complimentary of the standard seen.
West Norfolk ended up in first place in their league and along with Bury St Edmunds will progress to Leicester
for the next round. The squad was Declan Beales, Harvey Cross, Matthew Starling, Matthew French, Sam Bray,
Tane Dunn, Daniel Grapes, Jake Lammas, Arron McAllister, Fletcher Botten, Angus Williams and Mark
Taylor. The squad will be further strengthened when other squad players are available after missing out due to
school commitments on this occasion. A great team performance that makes both the parents and coaches proud
of the boys achievements.
