The score remained 1-1 until the fifth inning. Natalie Patterson followed that with a two-run single to right that made the score, 6-2, before Dolan finally retired the side. In the seventh, Westfield shut the door on Cranford with infielders Julia Romano and Rinaldi each making nice plays on hard hit line drives to retire the side in order. The win gave Westfield (1-4), a much-needed victory in what has been a very slow start to the season. “To get a win under our belts will help us,” said Westfield Head Coach Caitlin MacDonald. “We’ve been playing better but we have been making mistakes. Today we definitely made the plays we needed to make in order to win the game. The plays in the seventh to end the game were examples of the girls doing just that. We are a young group. We’ve got a couple of freshmen starters and a lot of sophomores, so as we move on they will get more experience and it should make us a better team.” With the loss, Cranford drops to 2-4. After advancing to the Union County Tournament title game last season, Coach Bormann is not worried about the slow start though. “We started slow last year before we got it turned around,” said Bormann. “We’ve been hot and cold at the plate so far and we have a young pitching staff. They are all freshmen and sophomores. But we will get better as they all get better.” Dolan went six innings for Cranford, scattering eight hits, while striking out four and walking three.
