Session 4
Chn learn about democracy in Britain today - what this
looks like now compared to when the Magna Carta was
first written.
Chn write a paragraph for their non-fiction report
about democracy in Britain today.

Chn to discuss the importance of democracy in school
and how we see it taking place each day – consider
Golden Rules etc
Chn to deliberate possible class rules – record these on
board.
Chn to vote on what the final rules for the class should
be.

Link further with the Golden Rues that we have in
school and ensure children are clear on the rules of the
zone board. Explain how these were decided upon
democratically by the teachers and then agreed upon
by governors – perhaps explain their role in school?

on the King’s powers and how it led to way to a more
democratic nation.
Chn to write a paragraph for their non-fiction report

What is Democracy?
Recap on previous learning - chn to pair share what
they think it means to be British and then what they
think the British values are.
Move on to discuss what chn think democracy is and
where they see it taking place.
Go through what democracy means.
Chn to write an introduction to their non-fiction report
about what democracy is.
During discuss possible revelation about the
importance of values and the important role and
power of democracy in the modern world.

Democracy – study of democracy in Britain today and
the creation of democracy by the Magna Carta.
Individual Liberty – pupils have autonomy over their
class rules.

establishing classroom rules, linking in with tolerance
of others.

The chn will visit the houses of parliament and take part in a work shop based on the House of
Commons and the House of Lords.
Chn will see for themselves what democracy is like in Britain.
The children will have the opportunity to take on a role of responsibility. They will be able to put
themselves forward for this and then the teachers decide who should be awarded each role.
In the first few weeks of term class school representatives will be elected by their peers.
