London is the capital city of England and of the United Kingdom. With
an estimated 8,308,369 residents in 2012, London is the most populous
region, urban zone and metropolitan area in the United Kingdom and is
the largest city in the European Union. Standing on the River Thames,
London has been a major settlement for two millennia, its history going
back to its founding by the Romans, who named it Londiniumук
The Tower of London - fortress one of the main symbols of the
United Kingdom, occupies a
special place in the history of
the English nation.
Tower, Fortress, standing on the
north bank of the Thames - the
historical center of London and
one of the oldest buildings in
England. In the words of the
Duke of Edinburgh in his book
on the 900th anniversary of the
Tower, "in its history, the Tower
of London was a fortress,
palace, royal jewelry store, an
arsenal, a mint, a prison, an
observatory, a zoo, a place
attracting tourists."
In the "Jewel House" Tower of
the British Crown Jewels are kept
. In the Days of the Reformation,
a collection of royal jewelry was
dismantled , but with the return
of the Stuart monarchy revived
the original idea of creating a
museum in memory of the
military achievements of the King
and the country. Most of royal
jewelry dates back to the period
after the English Republic , but
some ancient items relate to an
earlier time and used during the
coronation of the sacred
moments .
Among them, the oldest exhibit is a spoon for the holy oil , which was
used at the coronation of King John in 1199 , and the sacred vessel
that could have used at the coronation of Henry IV in 1399 Edward's
Crown weighing about 5 pounds was made in 1661 ceremony for the
coronation of Charles II. Crown of Queen Victoria ( 1838 ) adorned
with a ruby "Black Prince " .
Tower Bridge was built in 1894 in the Gothic style, according to the style
of the Tower of London. Two massive movable platforms, each of which
weighs more than a thousand tons, rising to this day, to let the passing
boats. The original hydraulic system of the bridge is exhibited in the
museum on the south side. The bridge opened to the public, and
walking through it, you can enjoy the many scenic views.
Trafalgar Square. The idea of creating the area belongs to J.
Nash. The square was built in the years 1829-1941 in memory
of the victory won by the British fleet under Admiral Nelson in
1805 off Cape Trafalgar between the Anglo-French war.
Nelson was killed in the battle. In 1842, erected a granite
column with a figure of Nelson (Raylton architect, sculptor
Bailey), the column height of 60 meters (170 feet).
