HEAD OF DEPARTMENT
Key purpose of the Role
To ensure that teaching and learning is consistently good across the Learning Team.
To initiate solutions, fully participate in and contribute to the improvement of teaching
and learning throughout the Academy. To also ensure that the assessment and
feedback cycle is embedded in teaching and learning and used consistently by all
teachers within the Learning Team. To implement and monitor tracking systems for
student progress, analyse data and instigate interventions to address areas where
progress is below expectations. To ensure that a rich and vibrant curriculum meets
the needs of all students.
Key Roles and Responsibilities














To use creative approaches in order to ensure that teaching and learning is
consistently at least good throughout the Academy.
To lead and monitor the impact of interventions where teaching is less than
good.
To have an up to date knowledge and understanding of national educational
developments and change. To ensure that these are communicated and
appropriate actions are planned and implemented as part of the Learning
Team’s improvement plan.
To monitor standards of Teaching and Learning in a systematic and timely
manner.
To evaluate feedback from T&L monitoring. To implement and communicate
solutions in response to this evaluation.
To ensure that monitoring and evaluation processes for Teaching and
Learning (e.g. Learning Team folder including SEF) are current, accurate and
communicated to the Learning Team and Assistant Principal.
To make a significant contribution to appropriate Teaching and Learning
Training across the Academy.
To induct and provide appropriate support and coaching for new staff,
including NQTs and ITTs, which will incorporate the use of assessment, data
and tracking.
To embed student led learning and differentiation into teaching and learning
and to monitor the impact on the quality of teaching and learning and
outcomes for students.
To facilitate and develop opportunities for teaching and learning links with
primary and tertiary providers and other organisations in the community.
To lead and develop effective parental engagement and communication.
To be proactive in identifying and participating in activities to ensure Learning
Teams are fully integrated and best practice shared.
To promote and champion all subjects in the Learning Team throughout the
Academy and wider community.
To track students’ rewards and behaviour data and take appropriate action to
ensure consistency in the application of Academy policies.















least good for all students, including all alternative provisions.
To lead intervention and monitor the impact of intervention where teacher’s
use of the assessment and feedback cycle is less than consistently good.
To have an up to date knowledge and understanding of national educational
developments and change. To ensure that these are communicated and
appropriate actions are planned and implemented as part of the Learning
Team’s improvement plan.
To monitor and evaluate student achievement and the quality of the
curriculum in a systematic and timely manner. To develop, communicate and
implement strategies identified through monitoring and evaluation processes.
To ensure that the Learning Team evaluation processes for student
achievement and curriculum (e.g. the Learning Team folder including SEF)
are current, accurate and communicated with the Learning Team and
Assistant Principal.
To make a significant contribution to training across the Academy.
To implement, develop and monitor all aspects of assessment, feedback and
tracking within the Learning Team.
To ensure that SoW are standardised across the Learning Teams, shared
with appropriate staff and regularly updated. To ensure that SoW are well
matched to student’s needs and provide appropriate levels of challenge for all
students.
To ensure that all curriculum, exam, and reporting information is provided in a
timely and accurate manner by the Learning Team e.g. entries, controlled
assessment, website etc.
To be proactive in identifying and participating in activities to ensure teams
are fully integrated and best practice shared.
To set (in liaison with the Assistant Principal) and monitor Learning Team
budgets to ensure value for money and no over spend including Pupil
Premium and other funding.
To make a significant contribution to improving the quality of teaching and
learning within the Learning Team.
To undertake appropriate duties and other administrative requirements as
required within the Learning Team or Academy.
To undertake a maximum of two duties a week that can include lunchtime
(break 2).
