ST. JOHN’S PRIMARY SCHOOL and EARLY YEARS’ CLASS
Morrison Avenue
Stevenston
North Ayrshire
KA20 4HH
Welcome to our May newsletter and to the final term of the school year.
I returned to school in April and I am delighted to be back in the school community after
my absence. Thank you to everyone for their kind wishes and for the warm welcome back.
I would like to thank Mrs. Thornton for all the work she has done in running the school as
Acting Head Teacher in my absence.
P7 Arran Residential Trip
P7 are currently enjoying their trip to Arran with Mrs Gallagher and Mrs Gilmour. They
are enjoying many experiences that we cannot offer here in school and they are having an
amazing time.
P6 will begin their fundraising efforts for next session’s trip to Arran at the Summer Fete
where they will have a Bric-a-Brac stall.
P1 Induction
On Tuesday 16th May we welcomed our new P1 pupils and their parents/carers for the
afternoon. The children had a fun time, playing games, sharing stories and getting to know
each other while the adults learned more about the life of the school. We look forward to
welcoming them again for school lunch on 1st June at 12.00 pm and for a Teddy Bears
Picnic on 19th June at 1.30 pm – 2.30 pm with their P6 buddies.
SCIAF
As always St. John’s school community were incredibly generous during our Lenten
Appeal, we raised the amazing total of £813.28
Thank you to everyone who contributed in any way to the appeal.
Rights Respecting School Award
Our Rights Respecting School committee have been leading the school on a journey where
the children have been learning about their rights in the United Nations Convention on the
Rights of the Child. We provided an assessor from UNICEF with our Action Plan, minutes
of our meetings and other evidence and we are delighted to have received the Recognition
of Commitment Award. Next session we will continue to work towards achieving the
Level 1 Award.
Lost Property
We have a huge number of items of lost property in the school. Please ensure that all
items of clothing, bags, packed lunch boxes and shoes are labelled with your child/ren’s
name. It is amazing the things that children can lose!
School lunches – Cashless System
You should have received a letter in the post with login details for our new cashless
catering system. P1-P3 pupils and pupils entitled to a free school meal will continue to
receive their lunch in the usual way. P4-7 pupils who pay for lunch will need to have their
lunch paid either online or at a Parent Pay Point. We will no longer be able to accept
money in school.
Please be assured that if you forget to pay your child will receive lunch and you will
receive a text message. We will ensure that no child goes hungry.
Sacrament of Eucharist
Congratulations to our Primary 4 pupils who recently received their First Communion.
They all looked very pretty and handsome on the beautiful sunny day and they enjoyed
their celebrations.
Family Learning Team
Linda Boyd from the Family Learning Team has been running a homework club in school.
A few parents and children attended the club and enjoyed the experience. Linda is keen to
run further events in school and would welcome any suggestions as to what would be
most useful for families. If you have any ideas or suggestions please let us know.
Rotary Club Quiz
Our P7 quiz team consisting of Brooke, Aiden, Findlay and Luca took part in the heat of the
Rotary Club General Knowledge Quiz. Although they did not win they were great
ambassadors for the school and enjoyed the experience.
Nil by Mouth
P7 worked with their peers from Glencairn Primary on an anti-sectarianism topic run by
Nil by Mouth charity. They visited Glencairn Primary School on two occasions where they
took part in activities and discussions about racism and sectarianism.
Charity Fun Day
P6/5 have been learning about charities and decided to organise a Fun Day to raise money
for their chosen charities. They organised a bake sale and many fun activities and raised
the sum of £232.50 which will be split between HCPT and Chloe’s Chemoo Cows. Thank
you to everyone who contributed on the day and to P6/5 who led this event. We look
forward to their “Charities” assembly.
Summer Fete
Our very active Parent Council will be running their annual Summer Fete on Friday 2nd
June from 3.00 pm – 5.00 pm. They are looking for donations of home baking and items
for the bottle stall, also for any parents/carers who can help on the day. Please come along
as all money raised supports the children in school.
