The Jackson State baseball team will enter its 60th season of action this weekend. Since 1958, JSU baseball has tallied 20 season with 30-plus wins. The Tigers are 41-19 in season openers. Head Coach Omar Johnson enters his eleventh season with Jackson State and has mounted nine 30-plus wins seasons and 10 winning seasons. The Tigers are returning five 2016 All-SWAC team members (two first team members). Miguel Yrigoyen (P) and Cornelius Copeland (INF) were both named to the 2016 SWAC Championship All-Tournament Team. The Tigers are returning 13 hitters that together hold a .322 batting average during the 2016 season. Six Tigers were named to the 2017 All-SWAC Preseason Team. Yrigoyen and Copeland were named to the First Team and Jesus Santana, Bryce Brown, and Sam Campbell were named to the Second Team. During the 2016 season, Copeland ranked fourth in the nation with a .420 batting average and Santana ranked 18th in homeruns with 17. 2017 JSU BASEBALL GAME 1-3 Tiger Bites What to Know Before the Action JACKSON STATE Last Season: The Tigers completed the 2016 season 34-26, finishing second in the Southwestern Athletic Conference East Division losing the first place spot to the 2016 conference champions Alabama State. In the SWAC Championship tournament, the Tigers went 2-2 missing the championship game with a 15-4 loss to Texas Southern in the semi-final round. TIGER SEASON At the Plate: JSU returns senior Cornelius Copeland and junior Jesus Santana who were major keys to the Tigers 2016 offense. Copeland ranked third in the nation with a .420 batting average, first in hit by pitch with 26, and third with a .537 on base percentage. Santana ranked 13th in the nation in RBIs with 67 and 18th in home runs with 17.0. On the Field: Head Coach Omar Johnson stated that he will be returning many of the same infielders from the 2016 season but will be putting them in different positions during this opening weekend. The Tigers return Sam Campbell, Lamar Briggs, Cornelius Copeland, and Jesus Santana. CJ Newsome will resume his role at centerfield and Bryce Brown and Lakon Wilson will be in right and left field respectively. On the Mound: Miguel Yrigoyen ended the 2017 season 9-3 with a 4.61 ERA. He is the only returning starting picture for the Tigers. Jesse Anderson, Jonathan Aponte, and Joshua Santiago did the heavy lfting in relieve while Santiago logged the most mound appearances with 21. JSU vs. Morehead St. The last time the Tigers faced Morehead was during the 2012 season in a four game series. JSU went 1-3 against MSU dropping the first two competitions 6-7 and 4-12. In game three, the Tigers delivered a 16-0 shutout but dropped the final game 4-5. JSU vs. Jacksonville University This will be the first time that the two teams have met. Preseason Awards Black College Nines: Jesus Santana, Cornelius Copeland, and Miguel Yrigoyen were named to the the first team. Perfect Game: Jesus Santana was named as the SWAC Player of the year and was also named to the All-Conference team along with Copeland, Newsome, and Brown. In his ten year tenure at Jackson State, Johnson has posted nine 30 win seasons, four consecutive (from 2006-07 to 2009-10), averaging 34 wins a season. Johnson captured his first Southwestern Athletic Conference title in 2013. That season the Tigers went 4-0 in the conference tournament. The Tigers repeated the feat during the 2014 season, going 4-0 in the league tournament to capture their second straight conference crown. During the 2014 NCAA Tournament, JSU knocked off the No. 1 ranked Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns – in a 1-0 decision – to mark the program’s first NCAA postseason win and the program’s first victory over a top-ranked NCAA team. Johnson led the Tigers to three straight 30 win season (2011-12 to present). In his first season at the helm of the Tigers program (2006-07), Johnson posted a 33-23 record. The following season, 2007-08, his Tigers recorded the most victories during his tenure as head coach – 37. During the 2009 season, Johnson became the first JSU baseball coach to reach the 100-win plateau within his first three years. Johnson joined former JSU head coach and former Athletics Director, Robert “Bob” Braddy as the only baseball coaches to surpass 100 victories at Jackson State. In 2012, he led the Tigers to six consecutive winning seasons as his team posted a 34-17 overall record and the SWAC Eastern Division title. During Johnson’s tenure at Jackson State University, he has helped the team achieve national recognition. Jackson State University Baseball team honors include: • 1st in the nation in stolen base and finished 15th in triples 2003 • 1st in the nation in stolen base and finished 23rd in batting averages 2004 • 1st in the nation in runs scored, 2nd in the nation in stolen base and finished 2nd in batting averages 2005 • 1st in the nation in batting average and 1st in runs scored 2006 Prior to coaching at Jackson State, Johnson worked at the University of North Alabama for four years. During his tenure at North Alabama, Johnson won two Gulf South Conference Championships, participated in two NCAA Regional Championships, one NCAA World Series and the NBC World Series. During his tenure at the University of North Alabama, Johnson helped lead UNA to a 40-15-1 record, Gulf South Conference title, and a NCAA tournament appearance in 1997. In 1998 UNA was 38-12 and followed with a 45-12 record, Gulf South Conference title, NCAA South Central Regional title and a NCAA World Series appearance in 1999. During the 2000 season, Johnson assisted in leading UNA to a 36-16-1 record for a combined 159-55-2 record over four seasons. Johnson helped lead UNA to several school records including: • Best Batting Average: .363 in 1998 • Most Runs Scored Per Game: 9.86 in 1998 • Most Home Runs: 63 in 57 games, 1999 • Most Extra Base Hits: 217 in 57 games, 1999 • Most Hits: 625 in 57 games, 1999 • Most Wins At Home: 32 in 1999 • Best Fielding Percentage: .961 in 2000 Johnson has worked numerous camps for various institutions and organizations. Johnson served as Head coach for the Cotton State Collegiate Summer League (2002, 2003 and 2005). In 2003 and 2005 Johnson’s team won the league championship. He traveled to Germany in the summer of 2004 serving as a coach with Major League Baseball’s Envoy program. The Envoy Program sends baseball coaches to teach the fundamentals of the game to players and coaches in countries throughout the world.
