1. Minutes of the previous meeting and outstanding actions
Philippe welcomed to the 11th meeting.
HSE comments on previous minutes were reviewed and accepted. An updated
version will be published on EDMS 1459817.
John added that tunnel cross sections will be studied in collaboration with HSE
and EN-CV. New cross sections could be presented at the next meeting.
The list of action items was updated
Actions are ordered by completion status, new and ongoing actions first.
Status is one of {New, Ongoing, On hold, Completed, Postponed or Cancelled}.

is needed to have a proposal. Longitudinal tunnel ventilation
will be mainly for fresh air in the tunnel. Some cooling of cables
carrying power is necessary.
2. Status of ongoing work in I&O (tour de table)
John reported that he will be participating in a working group chaired by
Austin Ball to study experimental caverns.
He will report to the FCC I&O
meeting. Philippe noted that the study of the technical caverns should also be
started this year.
Andre reported from a meeting with civil engineering and transport where
they discussed the layout of the safe areas and the best option for transport.
The need for a high-speed transportation system to evacuate people was
discussed. Philippe noted that the safe area for evacuation could be located
underground. Paul added that the machine should be designed to minimize
human presence in the tunnel. Andre explained that the goal of the meeting
was to see how to best integrate transport and personnel passage in the
design. A more detailed proposal will be presented in the Washington
conference.
Laurent announced that a kick-off meeting for the CEA collaboration was held
in Grenoble on Friday January 23rd and that the kick-off meeting with the
Technical University of Dresden is taking place Thursday January 29th. These
two collaboration agreements have been signed.
A third agreement is
discussed with the Wroclaw University of Technology to study the impact of the
design pressure of cryogenic equipment on heat in-leaks.
Dominique said that he is getting a Fellow beginning of March and that the
study work will begin. He is however still missing the alignment tolerances
from the physics working groups. Philippe suggested to use the tolerances we
have for the LHC, and for the time being to use the same numbers for both
lepton and hadron machines. He also noted better information on this subject
would be found in the accelerator and magnet study groups.
Peter reported that the reliability study team from Tampere University was at
CERN last week for the PureSafe conference. Peter and Johannes met with
them and could clarify the FCC work package and make a first milestone plan
for the work.

Philippe presented a few slides with information from other working groups,

The first FCC-hh magnet designs suggest transverse sizes similar to LHC
magnets, provided they operate at 1.9 K. They also indicate that an operating
temperature of 1.9 K is preferred, as it significantly reduces the amount of
superconductor in the coils, a major cost driver.
Concerning the
FCC
collaborations,
there
are
now 44
memoranda of
understanding signed and another 7 in work. The accompanying addenda are
lagging a little behind with 9 signed and 6 in work.
3. Update on the Civil Engineering Studies
Charlie explained that the civil engineering model has been enhanced with
more data about aquifers, geothermal boreholes, nature reserves, protected
wells and buildings. Philippe suggested that the distribution in depth of the
geothermal boreholes be considered in the discussion about the tunnel depth.
The civil engineering team are looking at the possibility of using the ROXIE
optimization tool used for LHC magnet design to find the best position of the
FCC tunnel. This tool uses deterministic and/or genetic algorithms to find
optimum solutions based on a number of constraints and an “objective
function” compounding several independent criteria with different metrics and
weights.
John asked if the environmental impact studies should be limited to civil
engineering or include also radiological and other aspects. Ralf proposed to
meet with John and Sonia Kleiner to define what should be included in the
study and by when it should be done.
Paul suggested that it may be time to include the beam dump tunnels in the
model quite soon. These tunnels will be around 1 or 2 km long and stick out
from the main tunnel.
4. Program of I&O presentations in FCC Week 2015
Philippe presented the latest version of the FCC Week programme.
In the Monday plenary session Philippe will give a status update on the GCC
I&O studies and Ian Bird will talk about the evolution of a global HELP
computing infrastructure towards FCC.

There are four sessions of one and a half hour on Thursday. There is one slot
free for a talk in the third session and the fourth is reserved for contributed
short communications from collaborating institutes.
Ralf suggested a talk about techniques to minimize human interventions in the
machine.
All suggestions for talks should be sent to Philippe.
5. Any Other Business
None.
The next meeting will take place on February 25.
