Captains Report .... Winter is officially over and it is time to get out on the course and enjoy the friendship and challenge of a game of golf. The recent green renovation and spraying of weeds on the greens has resulted in some patches etc. but with re-seeding and good growth they should return to the high quality we are accustomed to shortly. The extension of the 1st tee is underway and with the spring growth it should progress quickly from here. We come to the club for relaxation and enjoyment and since returning from my extended winter holiday, a few people have offered suggestions on what we can do to make this experience just a little more pleasant for all. These suggestions include: * If you are in a slower group, take pressure off yourself and those you are playing with by letting others play through. This reduces frustration in the following group and reduces your stress from being pushed or hit up on. (We will all, hopefully, get older and probably slower, but a little consideration from both the tortoises and the hares will make it better for all) When using the practice facilities, please consider others by using the sand to replace divots, not hitting practice balls toward others and not monopolising facilities by over use or not providing reasonable access to others. * Use black tees and a maximum of 2 balls when playing practice rounds. * Do not interfere with watering equipment (yes we have started watering!!!!) by moving it, stopping travelators or crimping hoses. * Please ensure you and those you invite to visit your course are appropriately dressed. (We have moved with the times regarding dress standards but it is important we maintain an appropriate standard of cleanliness and attire) On another note, we recently took possession of a new greens mower, a surrounds mower and a roller that should greatly assist our hard working course staff. We have also applied to the Kingborough Council for a grant to remove limbs from some of the large trees around the course that are dangerous or require trimming. Hopefully the council representatives will positively view this application. Competition numbers have been good and it is the time of year when a few new members join. Please make them feel welcome, encourage them to become part of the club by getting them into the clubhouse for a social drink and having a game or two with them until they feel comfortable. Kind regards and good hitting. Glenn Frame Captain TASWELD PAGE 2 ... Women’s Golf ... The WGTS Southern open was played on the last two Sundays at RHGC. Kingston had a very good representation. COURSE NEWS ... Spring is here and along with the warmer weather comes the unpredictability of the season, wind, rain, baking sun and mountain snow falls make for a challenging turf maintenance period. This time of year the playing surfaces are susceptible to both warm and cool season diseases as well as the early movement of detrimental insects. The September renovation proved challenging. We intended to use a 16mm hollow tine to a depth of 150mm on the greens however due to lifting of the surface we had to switch to a 10mm solid tine. We also took the opportunity to spray out the Spurry in the greens. Spurry has crept into the greens over the past few years, due to its slow spreading nature and grass like consistency it has been left unchecked. The treatment has worked well however with any successful herbicide application it has left bare patches where the weed was growing. To combat this we have over sown the greens with Browntop bent and fertilised heavily with Noculate complete. These patches will grow back in time. Recently the committee facilitated the purchase of 3 new machines: a new greens mower, a low hours tees and surrounds mower and a new greens roller. They replace a 4300hrs greens mower, a 4800hrs tees and surrounds mower and a 2400hr greens roller. I would like to thank Paul Jolley for his continued volunteer work on course. Paul is a no fuss volunteer and is a fantastic member of the crew whose work is much appreciated.
