Name Game- Sit in a circle. One person begins by saying their name and
an adjective that starts with the same letter (you can also do a food), the
next person must say the name and adjective of the person before them and
share their own. It gets progressively harder as you move around the circle
as the list of names grows and grows, and the very last person must try to
say everyone’s name and adjective.
Sharks & Minnows- Start with one person being the shark, all other
students become minnows. The shark starts in the middle of the play area
and tells the fish to come out, when the minnows slowly walk towards the
shark. At any point the shark can yell ‘Shark Attack!!’ and the minnows have
to run to the opposite boundary line without being tagged. If a minnow is
tagged they become a shark. The game continues until there are only one or
two more minnows, who can then become sharks in the next round.
Crystal Letters- Form pipe cleaners into letters and tie a thread around the
top of each one, with the other end of the string tied to a pencil. Boil a cup
of water either in a microwave or on the stove and add Borax in small
amounts at a time, until you can’t get any more to dissolve into the water.
Hang the pencil across the lip of the cup so the pipe cleaner letter hangs into
the water. Move this solution to a safe place where it can sit overnight.
When students remove their letters they will be crystallized!
Heads Up 7 Up- Seven students stand in front of the rest of the group, and
the rest put their head down on their desk. The seven students move around
the class and touch one student, who then puts their thumb up. Once the
seven students have returned to the front they say ‘Heads up seven up!’,
then the students with their thumbs up try to guess who touched them. If
they guess right they get to switch places and move to the front of the
room.
Three-Legged Race- Use a cloth or thin rope to bind two students legs
together, so that together they only have 3 legs. They should race against
another pair to a set finish point, seeing who can finish first.
Trivia Relay- Students should be split into teams. Once the leader says go,
they must run to the other end of the area and answer a trivia question. (It
is helpful to have a leader with the list of the premade trivia questions on
each side). Once they answer they can return to their team and the next
person in line goes. Whichever team has all members completed first wins!
Red Light Green Light- One person is the stoplight and all other students
stand in a line about 15 feet away. When the stoplight calls GREEN, all
students can run. When RED is called everyone should stop. Any students
caught running on red are out. Goal is to make it to the stoplight.
Gak- Empty two 4 oz. bottles of Elmer’s glue into a bowl, then refill them
with warm water, shake and empty into the same bowl. Add in desired food
coloring and set this mixture aside. Add ½ cup of warm water and 1 tsp.
borax into a cup, mixing until the borax dissolves. Add this mixture to the
glue and water bowl and stir it around. Keep mixing with hands until it
becomes the perfect gooey consistency.
Lego Scavenger Hunt- Form a scavenger hunt using only Legos! Can be
completed individually or in teams.
Obstacle Course- Set up a series of obstacles for students to make it
through, time them and see who can make it through the fastest!
Popcorn Reading- Reading from the same passage, have students read as
much as they can of a passage, then they can say ‘popcorn’ and call on
another student to read next. You can also divide passages to have all
students read similar lengths.
Animal of the Day- Have each student pick an animal and share about that
animal: how it looks, how it sounds, acts, what it eats, etc. Alternatively, the
leader can research an animal more in depth and share it with students,
allowing them time for questions and to act out the animals movements.
Human Knot- In groups of about ten, have each participant stand shoulder
to shoulder in a circle. Each participant lifts left and reaches to grab the
hand of a person across from them, then the right hand (no one should be
holding the hand of the person next to them). The goal is to untangle the
knot to form a circle without ever letting go of hands. If you have enough
students, you can play in teams where each group should race to untangle
themselves.
Beckon- First, identify a space where hiders must go when they are found.
One student is identified as It, and they count while all other players hide.
When the student who is It sees someone, they call out their name and that
student must go to the earlier assigned place. Once in this place, the player
calls out “Beckon, beckon, I need a beckon” and watches for a wave from
another player, when they can run away and hide while the It person isn’t
looking. The game is over when all hiders have been found.
Math Relay- Same as above trivia relay, except using math questions in
place of trivia.
