JEC designed, supplied, and installed a new time ball
at the Former Marine Police Headquarters in Tsim Sha
Tsui, Hong Kong. The time ball imitates the performance
and appearance of the original time ball established in
1885.
The function of the time ball was to rise and drop at
1300 hours every day to allow the masters of ships to
align their time-keepers. JEC has renovated the Time
Ball Tower and replaced the Time Ball mechanism.

The tower and ball was declared a monument by the
Antiquities and Monuments Office of the Hong Kong
Government, in the recently completed 1881 Heritage
development.
A JEC team composed of a Shenzhen-based design
team and Hong Kong project team, worked closely with
the architect to bring the monument back to life. As the
original time ball was removed without a trace several
decades ago, JEC had to create a new design based
on surviving time balls in other parts of the world. The
unique nature of this project is a showcase for JEC’s
tailored engineering solutions.
