2017 AP Physics 2
Physics Olympics
General rules
• You will be competing in teams of two and
your score will based upon how you do
compared to the the other teams.
• There will be one small event and one major
event.
• Both events will be scored as a test grade.
• Everyday you will be given a homework score
of 6, 4, 2, or 0 depending on how well you
used your time in class.
Physics Olympics Event 1
• USPS
• That stands for United States
Pringles Service
The Competition
• The goal of this event is to mail 2 Pringles
potato chips through the U.S. Postal service to
me here at WHS…UNBROKEN!
The Chip rules
• Chips:
– I will provide each of you two chips to be mailed.
– The chips cannot be stacked directly upon one
another when shipped.
– The chips cannot be altered in any way. No coating
them in anything.
– Remember that I want to be able to get the chips
out, even if in tiny pieces.
The package Rules
• You are making the package.
• The package size must be bigger than 5x3x1
and smaller than 6x5x8.
• The package must be rectangular so its
volume can be easy calculated.
Judging
• The packages will be packed here at WHS and
then taken home and mailed to school.
• Once all the packages have arrived here at
WHS we will take measurements to determine
the volume of the package as well as the
mass.
• The person who is named in the return
address will open the box, and retrieve the
chips.
Scoring
• Once the chips are removed the will be given a
score.
– Score of 2 if both chips are unbroken (tier 1)
– Score of 1 if one chip is unbroken (tier 2)
– Score of 0.99 to 0.0 depending upon the severity of
breakage (to be determined by the judge and one
outside source of necessary). (tier Zac)
• Upon scoring the chips the teams final score for
the event will be calculated using the following
equation:
Chip score / (volume (m) x Mass (kg))
Scoring
• After final scores are generated the teams will
be ranked from highest score to lowest. The
highest team will receive a 100, team 2 gets a
98, team 3 gets a 96 and so on….
• Failure to do this or to trying to cheat the
system will get you a zero!!
Dates
• USPS will be built in class this week from
today until 16th.
• We will seal all packages on the 16th and sent
home to be mailed on this day.
• We will record results once all packages have
arrived at WHS.
Physics Olympics Event 2 is…
EGG QUADRATHLON
A What?
• A quadrathlon is an event with 4 disciplines.
• An egg quadrathlon is a event with 4
disciplines that an egg must go through.
• The 4 events are:
– Crash Test
– Zipline
– Water landing
– Catcher
Overall Idea
• Your team will be given two eggs. You job is to get both
eggs down the crash test ramp, along the zipline, dropped
on water and sink, and finally dropped onto the catcher
from the highest height possible.
• Simply put, you have to build 4 devices, one for each
discipline, to hold your egg.
• If your egg breaks on a certain event you must retry the
event with your second egg.
• You cannot move on to a new event unless you have
successfully completed the previous one.
• If your last eggs breaks on a certain event we will use the
number of event instead of number of eggs in the above
equation.
Scoring
• We will use this equation
– (#eggs/ (mass x mass x mass x mass)
• Tier 1
– Complete all 4 events and have at least one whole egg
left.
• Tier 2
– You do not complete every event. In this case we
replace the #eggs in the equation with the #events
your team successfully completed.
Rules for all parts
•
•
•
•
You may not alter the egg in any way.
You may not cover the egg in anything (glue, tape, paint, etc.)
The egg will be checked prior and post each discipline in this event.
Packing peanuts, packing foam, bubble wrap, etc. can not be used.
(Pretty much don’t use packing supplies you can get from a post
office.)
• A whole egg is one with no cracks as all and get a score of 1. A
cracked egg is considered to be ½ and egg, and any “guts” coming
out is considered to be a broken egg and thus a 0.
• A plastic bag can be used to put your egg into for each event so that
if its breaks it does not ruin your device. I will provide these bags.
Part one: Crash Test
• Simply put, build a
vehicle which
transports and protects
its passenger as he/she
travels down an
inclined ramp, across a
level surface, and into a
wall.
•
We will go down the second set of stars
(on a ramp) and hit the cement wall.
Materials
• That’s up to you. Bring your stuff in and work
on it in class.
• Just NO prefabricated cars!!
The Competition
• The vehicle must be smaller than 16 wide, and
12 inches long, and 10 inches high.
• Your vehicle must be less than 750g.
• The ramp will be constructed out of wood. It
will be a minimum 22 inches wide and will
have walls at least 4 inches high on both sides.
• The vehicle must travel down the whole ramp
and must make contact will the wall at the
end of the ramp.
The Competition
• After a random draw for which order teams will
go, team one will be given their egg and 2
minutes to get their passenger into their vehicle.
– All passengers must be able to get in and out of the
vehicles.
– The seatbelt may not be directly fastened to the eggs
by any means.
– The restraint system must be designed such that when
the seatbelt is removed, the passenger will
immediately fall out of their seats when the car is
inverted (in other words, the seatbelt must be the
primary means of restraint.)
The Competition
• Once the passenger is in place one team member will
release the car behind the start line.
• A complete run is a run in which a car travels down the
entire ramp and strikes the wall and comes to a stop
under its own power.
• Their can be no “breaking system” on your vehicle.
• If you car fails to make it all the way down the ramp, or
into the wall you will get 2 more tries, but cannot
change the egg unless it broke in the failed trail.
• Once the vehicle comes to a stop one team member
must take the passenger out and show the judge.
The Competition
• Once the crash test is completed by every
group we will then move on to discipline 2….
Zipline
The General Idea
• A zipline will be
constructed out
of fishing line
that will begin
were the crash
test ended and
will end at
ground level.
Start
End
The Competition
• Using your egg from the previous
event you will now transfer your
passenger from the vehicle to the
zipline harness.
– Again, you will have two minutes to
make the transfer.
• One team member will hang their
device from the zipline setup shown.
The Harness
• The harness created will attach to the zipline
via the medium sized binder clip seen in the
previous picture.
• No harness can exceed 100g.
• You may make the harness out of anything
you wish provided you don’t break the rules
back on slide #15.
The Competition
• The team member will then release the
passenger to travel the entire length of the
zipline until it comes to rest on the ground
without any human assistance.
• Check this out
The Competition
• Once the passenger has come to a complete
stop a team member will take him/her out of
the harness to be inspected by the judge.
• Following this discipline the team will take
their egg and head of to discipline 3 the….
