the latest information on Kilkenny Arts Office activities, county events as well as news and opportunities
for arts practitioners from around the country.

Open Circle - Social Fabric: Portraits of Kilkenny Women – Have you started yours?
'Social Fabric: Portraits of Kilkenny Women' is a project initiated by the women of Open Circle Community
Arts Collective. Participants of Open Circle invited other women from throughout Kilkenny to join them in
the creation of this collaborative artwork. Textile artist Deirdre Harte responded to the group’s ideas with
an embroidery project that was both collaborative and distinctly individual, a collection of portraits.

installed the Social Fabric exhibition in Castlecomer Library, it will be there for the month of July.

Siamsa summer programme
Our ‘Siamsa’ Summer three day programme for 5 to 12 year olds ran on Monday 7th, Tuesday 8th, and
Wednesday 9th July. Participants learned about the water cycle and plants by creating their own mini
greenhouse garden, got down and dirty with the surprising science of soil, extracted DNA from a
strawberry and more curious discoveries!

Participants made their own mini botanic greenhouse, turning any window into a growing garden!

Children analysed the unique pattern of their fingerprints and built a DNA sculpture.

Proprioception –CALL FOR APPLICATIONS
Proprioception is seeking applications from live art Practitioners and performers of all backgrounds.
Proprioception is a performance event taking place in Kilkenny on Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th July
2014. Hosted & curated by John Conway, the event consists of 3 workshops with Fergus Byrne, Ciara
McKeon and Francis Mezzetti, culminating in a public exhibition. The workshops and public performance
exhibition will be held in a range of spaces across Kilkenny City.
Workshop fees: Participating artists will pay a fee of €30

Successful poets for the Kilkenny Poetry Broadsheet Issue 14 Announced!!!
This year's Kilkenny Poetry Broadsheet, a well established publication which gives local writers a platform
for their work, received record submissions, one hundred and ninety two poems were submitted for
consideration by seventy seven poets with thirteen poems by thirteen poets selected by Editor Enda CoyleGreene. Congratulations to all the successful poets and thank you to all who submitted!
Selected poets include Noel Howley, Mike Watts, Helena Nolan, Michael Massey, Gerry Moran, Carmel
Cummins, Rachael Hanaphy - Pigott, Paddy Doyle, Liam Cleary, Nuala Roche, Nora Brennan, Larry Cotter
and Gillian Somerville - Large.
Editor Enda Coyle Greene says of the publication:
'It was a pleasure and an honour to accept the role of Editor for this year's Kilkenny Poetry Broadsheet. The
number of submissions received, the highest ever, says a lot about the vitality of poetry as an art form in
Kilkenny, and made my task of choosing the poems for inclusion all the more difficult..'
Enda Coyle-Greene lives in Co. Dublin. Published widely in print and online journals, she is also a frequent
contributor to programmes on RTÉ Radio. Her first collection of poetry, Snow Negatives, won the Patrick
Kavanagh Award in 2006 and was published by Dedalus Press the following year. Her second collection,
Map of the Last, also from Dedalus, was published in 2013.
Friday, 15th August 5pm in the Parade Tower, Kilkenny Castle, will see the launch of the fourteenth issue
of the very popular Kilkenny Poetry Broadsheet, by former US Poet Laureate Billy Collins, with Editor Enda
Coyle-Greene.
Please do join us at the launch of the Kilkenny Poetry Broadsheet Issue 14 where you will have the
opportunity to hear the poets read their work and Editor Enda Coyle-Greene speak of their work.

"I am interested in how the human mind works, the unconscious mind in particular. My work explores how
repressed emotions can be triggered by the visual and how repressed desires can fester into fetishes."
Hickey's work distorts the human body to the point of unfamiliarity, and vague recognition. The body
remains, but it is no longer as we see it. Hickey uneases the viewer by unsexing the body, removing facial
features, leaving a mutated form of human, symbolising the twisted nature of our perception.

Something for everyone ‘Through the Mill’ – Inspired by Boland’s Mill – on show at Grennan Mill this

Filament Fibre Artists’ exciting new work, inspired by a disused flour mill in co. Kilkenny dating from the
12th century, has something for anyone who is interested in old buildings, local and social history, the
beauty of flowing water or the engineering of the massive machinery it powered. Time and nature have
impacted on the imposing structure and each of the artists represented here has responded to the building
through the prism of her particular artistic practice. These exciting stitched and felted artworks will be on
show during Kilkenny Arts Week, 9th -17th August 2014 at Grennan Mill, Thomastown. Not to be missed!

Expressive Arts therapy is a mental health profession that uses the creative process of art making to

Youthink - Youth Art Exhibition - CALL OUT FOR SUBMISSIONS

Ossory Youth would like to inform you about an opportunity for young people to display their art in a
public forum during Kilkenny Arts Festival (7th – 12th August)
The Youth Art Exhibition is the brainchild of ‘Youthink’, a youth group within Ossory Youth (Regional Youth
Service).
The exhibition will take place from Thurs 7th to Tues 12th August and is open to the public. Opening times
are 12 noon to 5pm. An exhibition launch will take place on Thurs 7th Aug.
The exhibition will comprise of both visual art (encompassing painting, sculpture and photography, etc)
and poetry. Submissions are welcomed from artists of secondary school age. We are particularly inviting
poetry submissions at this stage. Incorporating poetry creatively into the overall exhibition will involve
the young people who submit poetry meeting with us to discuss options.

The Brewery Project – Fund it campaign
The Brewery Project are Ita Morrissey, Liselott Olofsson & Darragh Byrne. We are a Kilkenny based arts
collective, together we are a theatre maker, ceramic artist and videographer. We have come together
because we recognise a need for a creative community celebration to mark the rich history of Smithwick's
brewery in light of its closure. The Brewery Project are looking for some support with their Fund it
campaign so they can make a site specific theatre piece, a documentary and exhibition of works. This is a
hugely collaborative & creative venture, please show your support.

We are now accepting applications for Red Square, our programme for young people aged 14-21. This
year's group will work with a local graffiti artist to create a mural for Kilkenny City Centre, attend shows
and exhibitions during Kilkenny Arts Festival for FREE, meeting artists and performers, travel to Dublin and
Waterford in search of other interesting arts experiences.

PUPPET SKILLS CAMP - Mon 14th to Fri 18th July 2014, 10am – 1pm
Thomas Baker of internationally renowned Your Man’s Puppets Theatre Company will be presenting,
storytelling and puppetry workshops for 8 to 14 year olds. Over the course of the week, puppetry will be
explored in three stages: storytelling, puppet-making and finally puppetry skills and performance.
RADIO PLAYWRITING CAMP Mon 28th July to Fri 1st Aug 2014, 10am – 1pm
For young people aged 8 to 14. The camp is a five day workshop in radio drama writing and performance
facilitated by actress Susie Lamb and award winning playwright Gillian Grattan. Over the course of the
week, participants will devise and develop a short play for radio which they will subsequently perform and
record.
THEATRE CAMP Mon 18th to Fri 22nd Aug
Group 1: 10 – 12 years old, 10am -1pm
Group 2: 13 – 14 years old, 2pm – 5pm
The Theatre Camp is aimed at young people who are interested in drama & theatre. It will provide an
intensive and fun exploration of theatre and drama and afford a real opportunity to develop theatre skills
and develop self-confidence. It is open to ages 10 to 14 and no experience is necessary. Each group will
work towards a short performance to share with family & friends on the last day.

August Craft Month 2014 is just around the corner and this year’s festival of craft is the biggest one ever
with well over 100 innovative events taking place across Northern Ireland including exhibitions, workshops,
talks, demonstrations and opportunities to ‘meet the maker’.
In 2014, make it digital. FAB LAB – a space where you can make (almost) anything – comes to the Office of

NAYD is seeking applications from twenty senior youth theatre members who will
participate in a week of drama workshops to develop material that will inspire the
National Youth Theatre production in 2015.

The Bram Stoker Festival celebrates the life, work and legacy of Bram Stoker and his gothic masterpiece
‘Dracula’. Running from 24th – 27th October 2014, the festival will see Dublin transformed into a lively
gothic-inspired city of the macabre.
The festival is currently inviting submissions from artists, arts organisations and creative producers to
engage with the city, its public and the festival by responding with ideas for unique work of all scales that
will thrill audiences of all ages. The main focus for the call-out this year is work that gives a contemporary
twist to gothic interpretations stemming from Bram Stoker’s work. We are hoping to commission
contemporary work inspired by more recent takes on “the gothic”.

Writers' Centre Novel Fair on 21 February, 2015.
Each writer will have a stand at the Fair where they will present the synopsis of their novel, the finished

This year we are extending the prize to those who make the longlist. Twenty-four applicants who do not

The European Cultural Parliament Youth Network (ECP YN) is currently launching in Ireland with a call for
applications to join the Irish team.
The ECP YN is a pan-European network of young art and culture related professionals whose mission is to
boost the value of the arts and culture across Europe and to give youth a voice.
There is currently an open call for applications for 10 national (Irish) core team members. Please click here

EFFE Festival Label 2015 -2016: Open call for applications
EFFE, Europe for Festivals, Festivals for Europe, is “a gateway into Europe’s festivals specialised in
everything cultural. It intends to broaden awareness of what’s going on in the festival world and to
promote excellence and innovation.”
The first of EFFE’s planned initiatives is a quality label. This label is intended to be awarded to festivals with
an artistic commitment, involvement in their local communities and a European and global outlook. It will
offer increased visibility and audiences and networking opportunities.

Call for applications: Prime 4 Kids & Family
PRIME 4Kids&Family, the European workshop for children and family entertainment is now open for
applications. The Creative Europe funded workshop is focused on writers and creative teams and supports
the development of projects for children, young adults or family audiences.
The workshop is open to experienced professional writers or creative teams with a project targeted at
children, young adults and family audiences. In order to be eligible to apply you must have a treatment or a
significant concept for an interactive project.
The workshop runs across two months and comprises two residential labs.

Royal Ulster Academy’s 133rd Annual Exhibition
The deadline for the Academy’s 133rd Annual Exhibition is Friday 11th July 2014. Submission to the
exhibition includes an online short-listing process. Artists can enter a maximum of 3 works in any medium.
Submitting artists must complete an online entry form, upload digital images of their work and process
payment by the closing date.

The Arts Council – Funding
Reel art 2014
Deadline for receipt of applications: Friday 17th October 2014, 17:00.
Reel Art is an Arts Council scheme designed to provide film artists with a unique opportunity to make
highly creative, imaginative and experimental documentaries on an artistic theme. Operated in association
with Filmbase and the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival, Reel Art will support two films with a
grant of €70-80,000 per project.
Film artists interested in applying for Reel Art are invited to attend an information session on the scheme
on Wednesday 17 September at 3pm in JDIFF, 13 Lower Ormond Quay, Dublin 1. Representatives from the
Arts Council and JDIFF will outline the purpose and priorities of the award and will answer questions on the
scheme. Anyone interested in attending is required to register their interest by sending an email to
[email protected].
Updated guidelines for Reel Art 2014, together with application forms for the scheme are available for
download from the website www.filmbase.ie/reelart as are details of previous Reel Art projects.
Visual artists in prisons scheme
Maximum awarded: €2,400
This scheme provides financial support to selected visual artists to conduct workshops over a period of 10
days in the education units in any of the Republic’s prisons.
Writers in schools scheme
Maximum awarded: €304
The Writers in Schools Scheme part-funds visits by writers and storytellers to schools throughout the
Republic of Ireland.
Writers in prisons scheme
Maximum awarded: €1,000
The scheme offers writers the opportunity to work with prisoners in prison/detention centres and
complements an existing arts and education programme in the Education Units within the prison system.

Arts & Business Northern Ireland has launched the Allianz Arts & Business NI Awards 2015.
The search is on for creative, star quality partnerships between the worlds of arts and business. Launching
the Awards were Sharon McTaggart, Operations Manager, Allianz, principal sponsor and Mary TrainorNagele, Chief Executive, Arts & Business NI. Nomination forms are now available to download from the
A&B NI website. The nominations have also been emailed extensively to the local arts and business

Open to experienced choreographer members of Dance Ireland, working in any genre,
with an established track record. The aim of the Dance Ireland Commission Award is to
invest in creation of a new and original work, which both supports innovative
choreographic practice and stimulates audiences. We wish to respond to proposals
that are daring and imaginative.
The Dance Ireland Commission Award is a cash award of €17,000 plus residency
support from Dance Ireland, Dance Limerick and Firkin Crane. The premiere of the
commissioned work will take place in Project Arts Centre, late 2015 or early 2016.

Visual Artists' Workspace Scheme 2015
Visual Artists Ireland, on behalf of the Arts Council, invites applications for grants of up to a maximum of
€30,000 towards the running costs of visual artists' workspaces. In keeping with the Council's policy
document Visual Artists' Workspaces in Ireland - A New Approach (DOC, 0.18 MB), this scheme has the aim
of assisting artists’ workspaces throughout the country to provide the best possible environment for
working visual artists and, where feasible, to enable a level of subsidy for resident visual artists.

Iarnród Éireann Offers Free Travel to Community & Voluntary Groups
Iarnród Éireann Irish Rail has today launched the 2014 programme for The Journey’s on Us, an initiative to
support organisations and groups in the voluntary, community, sporting and charity sector.
The Journey’s On Us” will provide 100 groups with a free group travel return journey for up to 50 people
per group during 2014, meaning 5,000 free journeys are on offer across the company’s services.
The company has today invited all community, voluntary, sporting and charity groups to apply for the 100
group travel trips available. Entry forms are available at all Ianród Éireann stations or online at
www.irishrail.ie/journeys.
The closing date for receipt of entries is Monday 14th July, at 16.30hrs.
All applications will be considered by an adjudicating panel and successful groups will be notified from July

Fire Station's Sculpture Workshop and Digital Media Awards
Fire Station established these awards in order to open up access to our facilities and resources for
professional visual artists. We now have two awards. The Sculpture Workshop Award & Bursary provides
use of and access to the workshop and its equipment, and includes a bursary up to €500 each. The Digital
Media Award & bursary provides access to Fire Station's Resource Centre and digital media facilities (4
months & €100 each).

PhotoIreland 2014: The Paris Photo Aperture Foundation Photobook Awards 2013 at The
Library Project

Initiated in November 2011 by Aperture Foundation and Paris Photo, the Paris Photo– Aperture
Foundation Photobook Awards celebrate the photobook’s contribution to the evolving narrative of
photography, with prizes in two categories: First PhotoBook and Photobook of the Year. The exhibition at
The Library Project offers the visitor the chance to browse the 30 books shortlisted, including the two
winners.

Colin Barrett shortlisted for The Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award
We were delighted to learn that Young Skins, Colin Barrett's debut short-story collection, has been
shortlisted for The Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award. The award, organised by the Munster
Literature Centre and funded by Cork City Council and the School of English University College Cork, is
presented in O’Connor’s hometown of Cork, Ireland, at the end of the Frank O’Connor International Short
Story Festival.
Previous winners of the €25,000 award include Edna O'Brien, Yiyun Li and Jhumpa Lahiri. The winner will
be announced early next month.

PlayShare is a collection of plays suitable for youth drama and theatre groups, made available through
NAYD.
All PlayShare scripts have been written specifically for young people. They vary in length, content and style,
but all have been produced by a youth theatre/youth drama group at least once.

CHANGING TRACKS – International Public Art Programme to Launch in Mayo
Mayo County Council is delighted to announce the official launch of CHANGING TRACKS at The Mill Times
Hotel, Westport at 1pm on Saturday 12th July 2014.
Senator Fiach Mac Conghail, Director of the Abbey Theatre will officially launch CHANGING TRACKS, an
outdoor temporary public art project taking place this summer in County Mayo, Northamptonshire and
Catalonia as part of the European Union’s Culture Programme 2007 to 2013.
The launch will be followed by a brief walking tour of the artworks created in Westport and a bus tour to a
number of the artworks further along the Greenway. The bus will leave Westport at approximately 2.30pm
and will return no later than 6.00pm.
Spaces on the bus are free but must be booked in advance as there is limited capacity.

DU Dance - Back To The Wall
One of the leading figures of international contemporary
dance, Royston Maldoom, working with Belfast-based
DU Dance, has developed a new inter-generational
dance piece called 'Back to the Wall', with three
generations of men and boys, aged between 7 years and
80 years.
The group comprised boys from Elmgrove Primary
School in east Belfast, young men in their 20s, and older
men from Clanmil Housing. 'Back to the Wall', filmed in
locations around Belfast, is now featured on the BBC's
'Arts Show' website.
