Alternate players belong to the same team. The game is played counter clockwise. Only one score is kept for each side. One deck of cards are used, with the following point values and order: Cards Jack 9 (Nine) Ace 10 (Ten) King Queen Eight (8) Seven (7) Six (6) Total # 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 36 Points 3 2 1 1 0 0 0 0 0 - Total Points 12 8 4 4 0 0 0 0 0 28 28 Card Game Deal: The cards are shuffled by the dealer (decided by the coin-toss) and cut by the player left to the dealer. All cards are dealt three (3) at a time. The bidding is based on all six (6) cards. Game Bidding: The next step is an auction (bidding) to determine which team will be the final bidder. A bid specifies the number of points. NO trump suit will be declared. Once a team bids, the other member of the team cannot increase the bid unless the opposite team changes the bid. But, the same team can raise the bidding to either honors (20) or higher (max 28). The side (team) which bids the highest will try to win at least that many points. The mandatory bidding, by the opposite team of the dealer (the player immediately right of the dealer), starts at minimum 16 points. If you are strong in some other suit than your partner, you may open with 20 (honors) or higher point value. You should always allow the other team to bid at their turn. Once the bidding is completed, the trump (thurup) is placed upside down on the table, without showing the trump suit to anyone. Only the bidder knows what the trump suit is. Playing the game: The player immediately to the right of the dealer leads the first trick. The BIDDER CANNOT lead a trump unless he only has trumps or the trump is exposed. The opposite team (or the partner) can ask the bidder to expose the rump, if he/she does not have the suit played. Then if the one who asked for the trump, must play a trump card, if he/she has one. If he/she does not have a trump card, any other suit can be played. Play proceeds counter clockwise. A trick is won by the highest rump in it, or if no trumps were played by the highest card of the suit led. The winner of a trick leads to the next. Scoring: The minimum bidding is sixteen (16) and the maximum is twenty eight (28). The scores depend on the point value of the final bid (or level of bidding) Nineteen (19) and below: Scores one (1) if won and two (2) if lost Twenty (20) – Twenty three (23) – Scores two (2) if won and three (3) if lost Twenty four – Twenty Seven (27) – Scores three (3) if won and four (4) if lost Twenty Eight (28) – Scores (4) if won and five (5) if lost NB: If the final bid is minimum (16) bid by the mandatory bidder, the player immediately to the right of the dealer, Scores one (1) if won and one (1) if lost. Deciding the winner Each team will be rewarded with the winning points after every match based on the results. The team reaching 12 points first will be declared the winner. But since there is a time constraint we would also have the total games capped at 9. So even after 9 matches, no team has reached 12 points, then after the 9th game whichever team has the highest points will be declared the winner. After the 9th game if both teams have same points then there would be a tie-breaker match to decide the winner. Note: The points and total games cap are subject to change based on the number of teams that register for the event. The First game is determined by a Coin-toss The game starts by coin toss with both the primary players (captains) from each team. The winning captain will either choose to start the game or shuffle so that opponent team starts the game. Cancelling and restarting a game: 1. If one of the players with all four jacks out of six cards 2. If no trumps are possessed by the opponent (all 9 trumps are possessed by the bidding team) 3. If the mandatory bidder (the player immediately to the right of the dealer) has point less six cards 4. If one of the players have all cards of the same deck. Disqualifying a player/team: 1. Any player or team who violates the general rules and guidelines mentioned above. 28 Variations – Cot and Thani (Not Included) 28 is a card game which is played across the state with different rules and formats. It would be really tough to include all the variations that is possible and to make it even we are not including the Cot and Thani variations which by itself is explained to people who knows what it is. The game will be played only based on the rules that are described above. Always remember that these games are played for fun and should be taken as such. Be courteous to your partners as well as your opponents. There is no need to get all uptight, if your partner made a mistake (wrong play). Discuss it with your partner after the entire game is over, in a courteous manner. HAVE FUN!!
