Microsoft Proprietary and Confidential Information Page 5 Contoso Corporation Windows and Office POC Assessment Report Devices, Operating System and Deployment Microsoft has a goal to reduce the investment and effort required to upgrade to Windows 10. This effort commences with the ability to perform in-place upgrades on systems currently running Windows 7, through to new features that could reduce the reliance on reference system images. This section of the document aims to provide Contoso Corporation with recommended activities related to preparing to deploy and manage Windows 10. Consultant should pre-populate this information based on previous engagements and only verify during the workshop 5.1 Devices Windows 10 preserves high levels of compatibility with existing devices. Contoso Corporation last conducted a fleet refresh in Year. For the deployment of Windows 10, Contoso Corporation will / will not refresh the existing fleet. The current device portfolio comprises the following: Consultant: Add entries by completing information in the starter row. To add more rows, click the “+” at the end of the row as shown in the illustration below. Total devices Total device count Device Count Manufacturer Architecture Device Type # Manufacturer Architecture Operating System OS Firmware Firmware TPM TPM State The Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) 2.3.1 or later is used by Windows 10 to verify the preboot process through the Trusted Boot feature. Devices that use the Basic Input/Output System firmware (BIOS), or incompatible UEFI versions are unable to configure this feature. Trusted Boot is a pre-requisite for the Device Guard feature in Windows 10. A Trusted Platform Module (TPM) is a cryptographic co-processor attached to the system board of the device. This device is used to generate, and securely store, secrets used in key exchanges. Windows features and applications may use the TPM to store or generate secrets. For example, Windows BitLocker uses the TPM to store secrets associated with an encrypted drive. Contoso Corporation devices are/are not compliant with at least Windows 8.1 UEFI requirements. Microsoft Proprietary and Confidential Information Page 6 Contoso Corporation Windows and Office POC Assessment Report 5.1.1 Recommendations Consultant: Remove recommendations that should not be made for the customer. Augment the recommendations as required based on new information obtained during the workshops. Based on the information provided during the workshop, it is recommended that Contoso Corporation consider embarking on the following activities to prepare for deploying Windows 10. Determine all systems that require a change from BIOS to UEFI. Establish all systems that will require firmware or hardware changes. Consider a refresh plan for devices legacy devices in the environment. Ensure that all devices have a compatible TPM and that it is turned on. For systems with hardware-based virtualization capabilities, consider enabling the relevant processor extensions for virtualization. 5.2 Operating System Windows 10 uses a new toolset for image design and configuration. The Windows 10 Assessment and Deployment Kit (Windows ADK) includes the Windows Imaging and Configuration Designer (WICD), which replaces the Windows System Image Manager (WSIM) tool. Accompanying changes are also included in a new version of Windows PE and the User State Migration Tool (USMT). In conjunction with these ADK updates and associated tooling such as the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit, Windows 10 provides a new way to configure systems known as Dynamic Provisioning. Provisioning will provide a way for configuration packages (including apps, device drivers and system settings) to be packaged and installed as a single entity. To determine if Provisioning is a suitable option for Contoso Corporation, complete the following items. Custom system images are used Number of images currently maintained Time to create and certify an image Frequency of image update Language Packs are required Number of Language Packs Top 3 reasons for using an image Top 3 issues when creating an image Require a reference system image for Windows 10 ☐ Click or tap here to enter text. Consultant: Remove recommendations that should not be made for the customer. Augment the recommendations as required based on new information obtained during the workshops. Consultant: Based on the information provided by the customer above, determine which of the first two points below would be a suitable recommendation. Ensure that the configuration items are possible as discussed in the Deployment Workshop. Based on the minimal configuration requirements that are currently included in the reference system image, consider transitioning to using Windows 10 provisioning as a method of applying a corporate configuration pack to a system that is installed with either a factory or retail image. OR Based on the configuration items included in the reference system image, it is beneficial to investigate transitioning supported configuration items into a provisioning Windows 10 provisioning package that may be embedded within the reference image OR Based on the configuration items, consider increasing the automation of creating a reference image. Evaluate and update Microsoft Deployment Toolkit to the appropriate version with Windows 10 support. Test existing script investments for Windows PE, DISM and USMT. 5.3 Office Suite Modern Office deployment is accomplished using either traditional MSI deployment, or via C2R package. One of the first things customers want to know about Office 365 ProPlus is how it differs from the traditional Office environment. By “traditional Office,” we mean MSI, WSUS, Windows Installer package, and the like. Office 365 ProPlus is different—it’s Office as a service. Consistent features Features and functionality of a traditional (MSI) Office environment still apply to Office 365 ProPlus. Just like any other version of Office: • It’s a full client installed locally. • Identical system requirements • Flexible system requirements Microsoft Proprietary and Confidential Information Page 8 Contoso Corporation Windows and Office POC Assessment Report • Group Policy support Office 365 ProPlus Only capabilities. Office 365 ProPlus has all of those old features, but it comes with many new and exciting ones. • New licensing and activation functionality • Identity and authentication features • Improved deployment technology • Smaller, more efficient product updates • Auditing controls • Source file packages • Side-by-side client Office Suites Currently in use Number of Office installations Language Packs are required Number of Language Packs Preferred installation method (MSI vs C2R Preferred activation technology Will Office be included with the Windows 10 reference image? ☐ Click or tap here to enter text. ☐ Click or tap here to enter text. The technology set requires that all application code is contained in web pages that are centrally stored and served to web browsers on demand. The need to cater for multiple browsers and browser versions often presents development challenges. As the most common medium for delivering applications and content, the web browser also poses as a common vector for malicious software as the web evolves. In January 2016, the Microsoft support policy for Internet Explorer will change. This change impacts the supported version of Internet Explorer on Windows Vista or later operating systems. This continuous delivery of innovation is referred to as Windows as a Service. Microsoft recommends that the majority of systems use the Current Branch for Business. The Long-Term Servicing branch is only recommended for missioncritical systems. The Windows Insider Preview branch should serve as a preview of upcoming investment areas and new features which Contoso Corporation is able to test and plan for. Finally, the Current Branch is the first public release to market of new Windows 10 innovation. This Current Branch should be considered for initial production assessment of features and testing critical applications.
