Stubbie or Bottle Jacket

Wine Bottle Jacket
by Viv Hamlin
These look awesome on your bottles, and the smaller ones for cans or stubbies feel good
to hold (just remember to put them on before you open your drink!)
They are perfect for the friend who has everything else!
The bigger size fits a standard 750ml wine bottle (24cm/9.5in circumference) and the
smaller one a 330ml stubbie or can (19cm/7.5in)
Spotlight Gelato, or similar 4ply yarn (cotton is best), 3.5mm hook
Buttons, beads, or crocheted flower or heart to embellish.
Elastic hair tie, matching or contrasting colour.
Double crochet (dc): yarn over hook (yoh), draw up a loop, (yoh, draw through
2 loops) twice. (USA dc, UK tc).
Pattern:
Pattern starts at the bottom of the jacket:
4ch, join to form circle, or do magic circle.
Round 1: 8sc in circle, don’t join
Round 2: 2sc in the first sc made and in each sc around =16sc
Round 3: (1sc in first sc, 2sc in next) around =24sc
Round 4: (1sc in next 2 sc, 2sc in next) around =32sc. For stubbie size stop
increasing here and go to Round 6.
Round 5: Wine bottle size only: (1sc in next 3 sc, 2sc in next) around =40sc
Round 6: sc in back loop of each st around = 32/40sc
Round 7: sc in each sc around = 32/40sc
Round 8: (ch3, skip 3sc, sc in next) around. This should give you 8 loops for
stubbie size and 10 or 11 ch-3 loops for wine bottle, join with sc into first loop.
Round 9: ch3, sc in next loop. Continue doing this until you can count 16 or 17
loops for stubbie size or 20 or 21 loops for wine bottle (count in the spiral),
depending on the bottle you are covering. Try it on for size, it should come just
to the bottle shoulder, or about an inch below the top of the can.
Next round: Hold a stretchy hair tie behind your work and sc around it to the
top of the jacket, doing 3sc for each loop, and sc in each sc. Slip stitch to the
first sc. Do one round of sc and fasten off, or Optional Top frill: (5dc in next sc, skip 2sc, sl st in next, skip 2sc) around. You
may have to adjust the skips towards the end of this round to accommodate
the last couple of dc fans.
No sewing up required, just sew your ends in, then decorate with buttons,
beads, and/or flower of your choice.
Slip it on your stubbie/wine bottle – you deserve a drink now!
