Transdiagnostic CBT using Method of Levels
presented by
Dr Warren Mansell, Dr Sara Tai and Dr Tim Carey
Venue:
The Library, Dalton Ellis Building, University of Manchester, Conyngham Road, M14 5RL
The transdiagnostic approach is supported by a wealth of evidence that processes such as worry,
emotion suppression, self-criticism and avoidance maintain distress across psychological disorders.
Perceptual Control Theory (PCT) explains all of these processes as forms of ‘inflexible control’ that block
important goals, values and needs. Method of Levels Therapy (MOL) helps people to let go of these
habits and form more flexible, adaptive ways of regaining control of their lives. In this workshop, the
principles and techniques of MOL will be clearly and practically described for clinicians to offer a
transdiagnostic CBT that is tailor-made to the goals of each client.
What are the advantages of Method of Levels?








It is a true science-practitioner approach – a single theory that justifies and informs every
element of the therapy.
It is flexible and adaptable to individual clients.
It is grounded in evidence from basic science (see pctweb.org).
Is does not involve learning different ‘disorder’ models.
It does not involve learning detailed protocols, psychoeducation materials and varied tools
and techniques.
It liberates therapists to help them help their clients without having to fully understand and
interpret every one of the client’s problems.
It can be interwoven into other psychological therapies.
It helps to deal with ambivalence, ‘resistance’ and ‘blocks’ in therapy
By the end of the workshop, delegates will be expected to have:




Understood the utility of the transdiagnostic approach
Grasped the fundamentals of Perceptual Control Theory
Grasped the principles of Method of Levels
Engaged in sufficient practice of MOL to begin to utilise it within existing therapies and to
begin a process of training to adhere to the approach
Teaching and Learning Methods
The workshop will involve small group discussions, workshop leader demonstrations, audio and video
clips, and experiential learning exercises. Delegates will be expected to be willing to talk about their own
problems and experiences within small group settings for training purposes.
The workshop is suitable for all levels of expertise from trainee to advanced.
