Creating a Lead
V - Cut movement. 3 types of forward lead can be taught
 Straight forward lead v cut
 L - cut
 Step into, pivot and release
Points of Emphasis:
 Foot placement
 Change of speed
 Change of direction (i.e. the angle of the cut)
 Face up to basket when ball is received
 Triple threat position
Fill, Rip and Go
On catch shots to work on
 Face up and shot
 Face up, shot fake and 1 dribble on side shot
 Face up, shot fake and cross over 1 dribble shot
Passer at top gets rebound and passes back to the top.
Players change lines
Fill, Read Line and Back
Cut
Use the back cut when defense playing outside 3 point line
Points of emphasis:
 Teach the read
 Push off outside foot
 Passer rebounds and passes back to top
 Players change lines
Pass and Rear Cut or
Front Cut (Give and Go)

Ball starts with player on baseline
Passes to top and closes out on one of the receiver’s
shoulders.
Points of emphasis:
 V cut movement to get open
 Target Hand
 Catch and face up to hoop
 Foot work and balance

After pass read line of defense to
 Rear Cut or Front Cut
 Passer goes to rebounding line
 Defender (token defense) goes to point
 Shooter goes to 45 spot
Points of emphasis:
 Read Defense
 Target Hand
 Foot placement and sealing
Dribble at
Use the Dribble at when defense is over playing team mate
and has not cut back door.
Sequence
 Ball starts on base line passed out to point
 Baseline passer then plays denial defense on player 2 v
cutting to get open unable to shake defender
Points of emphasis:
 Read Defense
 Target Hand
 Foot placement and sealing
Point sees team mate overplayed and dribbles at defense
(make defense freeze)
 Wing player then cuts back door
 Point throws a bounce pass to cutting player
 Defender goes to point
 Point goes to wing
 Shooter joins end of line on baseline
Points of Emphasis
 Ball handler to work on passing off dribble
 Cutter to push off outside foot
 Target hand
Post cut
Sequence:
 Ball starts in hand of wing player
 On ball defender not to follow offensive player
 Passer to read where defense is positioned and make an
entry pass to post
 On pass read defense and cut either through Elbow or below
bottom Hash mark
 Post player to bounce pass or flick pass to cutter
 Rotations On ball defender to wing
 Post player to on ball defense
 Post defender to post
 Baseline player to rebound shot pass out to wing and play
defense on post.
Points of emphasis:
 Read defense positioning and head turns
 V cut through elbow or below hash marks
 Target hand
