Kindergarten Registration and Welcome to Kindergarten
On Thursday, May 22, Westervelts will be hosting a “Welcome to Kindergarten” evening. This evening provides all
children who will be starting Kindergarten in September with a wonderful opportunity to experience a full day
kindergarten program. Families will learn about the importance of play, inquiry, literacy and numeracy as they visit our
kindergarten classes. Teachers will be available to answer questions and share information. Families will receive a
courtesy reminder call this week. We are all very excited to meet our newest Westervelts friends!
We are still accepting registrations for next year for junior and senior kindergarten. If you have not yet registered, or
have neighbours who have children born in 2008 or 2009, please encourage them to contact Westervelts Corners P.S. at
905-459-3456. We will be happy to provide you with a registration package and let you know more about our Full Day
Kindergarten programme.
Thank you for your generous
donations to the food back! We so
appreciate your support!
Cross Country
On Tuesday May 7th, our students from grades three to five competed in the cross country meet held at
Heart Lake Conservation Area. During this competion the students raced against participants from 25
other schools on a very difficult 2.0 or 2.5 km course. We are very pleased to say that runners not only
performed well, but also without injury. They represented great sportsmanship throughout the day and
competed with great heart!

EQAO-Grade Three Testing
From May 26-28 ,our grade three students will be involved in the Ministry of Education’s grade three testing. Over the
three days of the testing, students will write six, one hour tests, two Writing, two Reading and two for Mathematics.
The students and teachers have been preparing for this testing since grade one and we are confident that our students
will do their best! It is very important that all students are in attendance during these days. We would appreciate it, if
you could not schedule appointments during this time, and ensure that your children are prepared for the test, by
arriving on time, well rested after eating a healthy breakfast. We thank you for your support and wish our grade three
students the best of luck!
Character Education
This month, Mrs. Augiton, Mrs. Law, Mrs. Mautner and Mrs Sohail’s classes hosted a wonderful assembly
with a focus on co-operation. It was wonderful to see so many parents in the audience! We also had a
cultural presentation to highlight the many different tradition celebrated by our students.
At this assembly we also recognized many students whose names were selected from the “Gotcha” box.
Congratulations to the following students; Chamarthy and Malik (1A), Ysabella and Lauren (1B), Oshini
and Fabian (1/2A), Naomi and Manya (2A), Emily and Arvion (2B), Limar and Jasmin (2/3A), Iman and
Mea (3A), RaeAnne and Noor (3B), Kyle and Divjot (3/4A), Braeden and Eben (4A), Sneh (4/5A), Parachi
and Mudia (5A), Anaya and Krysta (5B).
Our next character focus is on the trait of honesty. We can show that we are honest when we:





Demonstrate integrity in your words and actions.
Acknowledge responsibility for your actions and words.
Tell the truth and admit to your mistakes.
Play by the rules.
Do what is right, even when no one is watching.
Westervelt’s Corners is Planning a Musical!
On Thursday May, 29th, students in grade 4 and 5 are performing two shows of the musical
“Dig It”! The musical numbers are all about Ancient Civilizations. The staff and students having been working
very hard to prepare for this event and we are hoping that families will be able to attend one of the
performances. The afternoon performance will take place at 12:00 and the
evening
performance will be at 6:30. We hope to see you there!
Dig It News! Bring your money!
The ISELP team will be selling tasty treats and drinks on the night of the play (May 29th). All proceeds with go to Doctors
without Borders. Please help us out by buying some tasty munchies to enjoy during the play.
Grade Five Events
It is hard to believe that we are already looking towards the end of the school year! For our grade five
students, this is a very exciting time! We know that for some students, moving to middle school can be
quite stressful. To help ease this transition, Royal Orchard provides many opportunities for students to
learn more about their school. Staff and students from Royal Orchard shall be visiting Westervelts on
May 15th and 16th. Our students then have the opportunity to visit Royal Orchard on May 21st and May
28th. If you have questions regarding these visits, please contact your child’s teacher.
On Wednesday, June 25th, at 2:20, our students will be hosting a “Moving On” Ceremony. Unlike the more
formal occasions that take place at the end of grade twelve, this ceremony provides student and families
with a more casual opportunity to recognize this important transition to Middle School. It is not
necessary to purchase “dressy” clothes for this event.
Raptor’s Day at Westervelts
In hopes of helping our Toronto Raptor’s Basketball team defeat the Brooklyn Nets and advance to the
second round of the NBA playoffs, Westervelts Corners had a Toronto Raptor’s Day on Friday, May 2.
Staff and students proudly wore their red and white, decorated the school and took part in a basketball
shoot out! Congratulations to Mr. Jackson, Mrs. Augiton and Mrs. Jindal’s classes for achieving the highest
scores in the contest. Unfortunately, the Raptors were eliminated after a extremely close game seven!
We are looking forward to cheering the team on again next year in the playoffs! Go Raptors!
