Bruin Girls Track & Field Team Expectations Update 01/11/2015 UNITY – this is what our team believes we should be. U – Unselfishness – Lose ones individuality in the team roles & goals N – Nurturing friendships – Fun along the way I – Integrity – Inner discipline – follow expectations – be on time T – Trust in teammates Y – Yea-sayer – positive person who does their part to align team members, coaches and managers. Mutual respect, loyalty and allegiance with and for each other. Main Expectations for Bruin Girls Track & Field Athletes 1. Come to practice daily. 3:30 - 5:40 (Monday 2:50-5:30) - if you must miss, check in with Coach Chesterfield-Stanton the day before in person or call her at lunch with a valid reason, no text message. 2. Practice attendance is required – miss practice the week before a meet without contact and approval – no competition or travel. Practice attendance does affect level of meet competition. If you miss practice without permission, you will not compete in next meet. 3. Healthy Habits – Balanced life - Sleep, Nutrition, Water – Eat breakfast & lunch 4. Support your teammates by staying for the entire practice and meet. 5. High Standards of Conduct Sportsmanship – team respect – treat each person with respect. UNITY Manners and appropriate attire at practice & meets. Courtesy to coaches & meet personnel Associate with people who will help you lead a good life. High moral standards – no lying, stealing, etc. Refrain from drinking, drugs, & illegal activities. 6. Report injuries immediately – “ICE” for most problems – See our athletic trainer, Mr. Steve Gross, and then report to your coach. Athletes who want to compete must follow alternate workout plan assigned by coach in conjunction with trainer. 7. Do not share your locker – problems arise – keep your belongings safe. 8. Be proud of your membership on the team, of our school, of our town A. It is your Privilege to be a member of the Bruin Track and Field Team. It is your commitment. No one forces you to go out for track. If you chose to compete for the Bruin Team, go through with it; commit yourself. Be a valuable team member - make your contribution count. If, during the season, you decide track and field is not for you, talk to Coach Chesterfield-Stanton in person so that you leave the program in good standing with no hard feelings. The athlete must complete the season unless injured or excused by the head coach for personal or health reasons. Injured athletes are encouraged to complete the season as a manager or a student assistant coach. B. Loyalty: to coaches, to your teammates, to your school. Be loyal - support the program and everything it stands for in the school. Courtesy to Coaches Remember that coaches are human and have good and bad days, just like each of you. Please maintain yourself with the courtesy due to an adult. You may not always agree with a coach, but please respect the hours they dedicate to our team. Talk to them about problems. Keep an open mind. C. Practice is required daily. Monday from 2:50-5:40 and Tues-Friday from 3:30 – 5:40 or until your coach's designated practice is completed for each event. Everyone is expected to stay the entire period unless Coach Chesterfield-Stanton grants permission. Be ready and in the gymnastics room on time. If you are late due to a class, bring a pass from the teacher. We will try to work around driver’s education. D. If you are unable to attend practice, be sure to contact Coach Chesterfield-Stanton either the day before in person or call at lunch with a very good reason for asking to miss. One unexcused absence is cause for suspension from the team. A player missing practice the week before a meet without permission will not be allowed to compete or travel. If you are sick, make sure Coach C-S knows with a phone call, 459-2555. Please do not come into my office immediately before practice and ask to be excused, I will get upset. If it is a genuine emergency, still plan on explaining fully why you must miss. If Coach C-S is gone, contact Coach Stiles. E. Ask permission in private, not in front of other students. Always explain fully to a coach about situations that may arise. Never assume a coach knows what else is going on in school. Talk honestly with your Coach. F. Come to practice with a plan, work your plan, set goals, and learn all you can about your sport. An athlete is just like a student, the more you know about the subject; the better you will do on the test (meet). Practice is a time to work. G. If you don’t know why you are entered in certain events or want to be entered in others, ask your coach. Don’t assume I/we can read your mind. Large team numbers require open discussion. H. Communication: Let's keep the lines of communication open and flowing. Things go much smoother if we know beforehand when things are going wrong or when something is happening. Communicate with the coaches – talk about workouts as they relate to you. Is the workout challenging you? Are you getting in shape? Are you learning the event? If you are in another sport or activity, your coaches need to know. If you get hurt at another activity, it is very important that your coaches know. The trainer needs to know exactly what happened so that he can effectively start the healing process. Please discuss limitations due to participation in another sport with each coach you work with in practice. I. Common Sense rules the day. My office is always open for you and I accept phone calls. J. Consideration to Other Team Members - Each person is trying to improve and needs help. Realize the worth of each team member and work together. Coaches can only spend a certain amount of time with each individual. Accept this and learn to work together and on your own. K. The traveling team is expected to maintain high standards; neat, clean clothes, no holes in blue jeans; proper conduct; good manners; good sportsmanship; and also, exactness in following the rules on curfew, bedtime, boys in room, bus rules, and traveling manners. No walking around in the bus, sitting on the arms of the seats or horseplay. The bus should be left spotless. Captains & seniors are in charge of the bus but if they have to clean, they get to run conditioning practice the next day. Ipods may be used with headphones. Talk in a normal voice on the bus or in the restaurant. Thank the bus driver for getting us home safely. L. Dress at Practice: You are expected to wear appropriate track team attire at practice and meets. Tee-shirts and shorts and sweats pants, tights, or wind-pants are to be worn daily. Sweatshirt and pants should be kept on during practice until coaches give permission to take them off. It needs to be warm outside. Tee-shirt with sleeves not tank tops are requested. M. Dress at Competition: Represent your team by wearing track issued equipment or team sweats. Keep your uniform clean and neat. Team members are expected to stay in competition uniform for the duration of the meet. N. During a meet, team members are required to stay at the meet for the entire meet. Permission to leave early must be granted before the day of the meet. Do not come up during a meet and ask to leave early – I will get very upset. O. You are expected to actively support your team during a meet. Cheering, carrying sweats, etc. are a great help to your teammates. Cell phones are to be used sparingly – call/text your parents after events to check in but we want you involved in the meet, not talking on a cell phone the entire meet. IPods may be used with one ear pod out – safety. P. You must return on the bus unless the head coach and an administrator have approved it at least two days before the meet with Coach C-S being notified early in the week. This should be for exceptional circumstances only, no more than once per season. Team members should be on the bus. Q. Injuries should be reported immediately. Don't try to push an injury to its limit. We need a healthy team and unless you report an injury to the trainer, we cannot start the healing process. Healing is achieved by following therapy with ice, heat, rest, flexibility, and strength. R. Managers are to help the coaches prepare for practice and meets. They are team members and should be treated accordingly. S. Please get at least 8-9 hours of sleep each night. It keeps you healthy and gives you a better attitude the next day. Follow the team curfew established by the current team. Normally, you should be in bed by 10:30 the night before a meet. T. Each girl will be issued a lock and locker. You are asked/required to keep it locked at all times. You will be issued track equipment, spikes, shoes, warm-ups, etc. You are responsible for turning the equipment in at the end of the season in good condition or a fine will be assessed. If you quit the team, equipment should be returned immediately. Please do not share your locker. U. The athlete should attend the end of season awards banquet. V. You should eat three balanced meals each day. Breakfast is especially important and I would like to get you in the habit of eating breakfast even if it is only a glass of milk and a piece of peanut butter toast or yogurt. W. No Swearing: It is cause for disqualification from a meet. Don't get into the habit. X. The words "I CAN'T" "I WON'T" "I DON'T CARE" should never be heard in our gym or practice field. We don't make excuses - No ifs, ands, or buts.
