1.7 Celebrating Pentecost
•To know what happened at the ascension
•To know what happened at Pentecost
•To understand why the Holy Spirit is so
important for Christians today
Jesus
• Jesus’ mission on earth lasted around thirty three
years. We know very little about the first 30 years as he
appeared to live more or less like an ordinary man. He
was probably a a carpenter like his (step) father Joseph.
• Most of what we know about Jesus happened in the
last three years of his life. Jesus spent this time
teaching people the good news, healing and
performing miracles. At the end of his ministry he was
killed on the cross.
• He rose again on Easter Sunday and appeared to a lot
of people for the next 40 days. At the end of this time
he ascended directly to heaven.
The Ascension
After his suffering, he showed himself to these men and gave many
convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a
period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. 4 On one
occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command:
Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised,
which you have heard me speak about. 5 For John baptised with
water, but in a few days you will be baptised with the Holy Spirit. 6 So
when they met together, they asked him, Lord, are you at this time
going to restore the kingdom to Israel? 7 He said to them: It is not for
you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own
authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes
on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and
Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. 9 After he said this, he was
taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their
sight. 10 They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going,
when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. 11 Men
of Galilee, they said, why do you stand here looking into the sky? This
same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back
in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.
Wait in Jerusalem until
the Holy Spirit arrives.
He will give you power
to be my witness and to
spread the good news
God the Source
1. Briefly summarise what happened at the
ascension.
 How do you think the disciples felt when
Jesus finally left them on their own. Explain
your answer.
“you will receive power when the Holy Spirit
comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in
Jerusalem and to the ends of the earth."
•Jesus ascended to heaven and told the
disciples that he would send the Holy Spirit
to help them with the mission.

The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost
1When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2Suddenly
a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole
house where they were sitting. 3They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that
separated and came to rest on each of them. 4All of them were filled with the Holy
Spirit and began to speak in other tongues[a] as the Spirit enabled them. 5Now
there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven.
6When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because
each one heard them speaking in his own language. 7Utterly amazed, they asked:
"Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans? 8Then how is it that each of us
hears them in his own native language? 9Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents
of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10Phrygia and
Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11 (both
Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs-we hear them declaring the
wonders of God in our own tongues!" 12Amazed and perplexed, they asked one
another, "What does this mean?"
13Some, however, made fun of them and said, "They have had too much wine.[b]"
Peter Addresses the Crowd
14Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd:
"Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen
carefully to what I say. 15These men are not drunk, as you suppose. It's only nine in
the morning!
Drama
• In groups you will be making and performing a
drama telling what happened at the ascension
and Pentecost.
• Time- you have the rest of this lesson and half of
next lesson to complete your drama. You will
perform them next lesson.

Explain what happened at the ascension
Explain what happened at Pentecost
Explain what happened next
It must be accurate
It must be entertaining
It must be easy to understand
Pentecost
• Jesus ascended to heaven and told the disciples that he
would send the Holy Spirit to help them with the
mission.
• After Jesus had left them the disciples were frightened
and hiding in a house.
• The house filled with wind and fire settled on the
disciple’s heads.
• They ran outside and started telling everyone about what
Jesus had taught.
• They spoke in different languages, it was a miracle
• Some people thought they were drunk but it was only
nine in the morning
• Through the power of the Holy Spirit, the disciples
spread the message throughout the world.
2. Use the summary above to help you write and perform a
drama telling the story of the ascension and Pentecost and
what happened next.
