About The Emblem:
Pope Pius XII’s pontificate (1939-1958) was marked by a singular devotion to the cause of lay
spirituality. The purpose of the Pope Pius XII program is to challenge the candidate to evaluate his or
her own personal talents and abilities in light of the possible choices available to him or her in
selecting a career, a lifestyle and a ministry that will assist them in making these choices and to
reflect on how these areas are interrelated.
Program:
The Pope Pius XII program seeks to help the youth to answer the question of what it is that God is
calling me to do with my life. The program explores life states in the secular community (married vs.
single) and in the religious community (vowed vs. promised), possible career choices in both the
secular community and the religious community and the opportunities available for serving the
Church both as a lay or religious. This program is mainly discussion-based and designed for small
groups. During the program the participants will interview persons in various lifestyles and careers,
conduct research on a topic and attend a retreat. The program contains seven to twelve sessions that
will take 4 to 6 months to complete.
The ePopePiusXII program is designed for scouts who have difficulty attending a regularly scheduled
small group session – either due to busy schedules or distance to an available program. Scouts that
are interested in participating in the ePopePiusXII program must have an account and be familiar
with Facebook. While the program has a very flexible schedule, in order to respect everyone’s desire
to receive the emblem, an approximate schedule has been defined for progression through the
program.

Complete Topics Presentation
The above dates are estimated group completion dates for the topics. Prior to the completion date of
each section, participants are expected to answer facilitator questions and respond to submissions by
their peers in the program. Participation is expected to be approximately 30 minutes a week at a time
of the participants choosing.
Responses to questions and peer submissions are expected to be topical, thoughtful, constructive, and
substantive. A substantive submission is described as a submission of no less than 150 words. A
substantive post may contain references to the reading, questions about a peer’s submission, or
discussion about a topic related to the current chapters from the book.
NOTE: All Modules in the workbook must be completed as a group and in the order presented.
NOTE: The Facebook group is a closed/private only group participants and facilitators are given membership to the
forum.
Board of Review Options
To complete the Pope Pius XII emblems program, participants must participate in a board of review.
Board of reviews are offered by the Archdiocese Catholic Committee on Scouting and staffed by
certified emblem counselors and facilitators. The Board of Review is not a test. It is an opportunity
for participants to share their experiences with the program.
Saturday:
5 March 2011 - Shakopee
Wednesday: 9 March 2011 – Golden Valley
NOTE: Scouts will be invited to request a time and date for their board of review. Each scout will be scheduled
for a specific 30 minute BOR session at or around the request time.
Life States Panel
The life states panel is a very important part of the emblem program. It provides an opportunity for
participants to ask questions of individuals or couples that represent different life states discussed in
the material. These individuals represent clergy, religious, married, and single individuals. During
the “Life States” portion of the class, a short bio of a member of the panel will be posted as a base
thread.
Each participant in the ePopePiusXII program is expected to post at least one thoughtful, substantive
question to each member of the “Panel”. Panel participants may choose to answer questions
individually or post thoughts to multiple questions in a general post within the thread. Participants in
the program are invited to respond with follow-up questions. But, are not required to do so.
Eligibility:
A Scout must be registered in either a Boy Scout or Venturing unit. Girls registered in the Venturing
are eligible to receive the Pope Pius XII Emblem. All Scouts must have completed the ninth grade,
be of the Catholic faith, attend Mass regularly, and must have received some form of Catholic
religious faith formation. Receiving the Ad Altare Dei Emblem is not a requirement for the Pope
Pius XII.
The applicant, their parents or guardian, their Scout Master or other Troop adult leader, their pastor
and their Pope Pius XII Counselor must sign the application found in the Pope Pius XII workbook
indicating the Scout meets these requirements before any work on the emblem begins.

available from the local Scout Shop.

The Pope Pius XII medal and is presented by a Bishop of the Archdiocese of St Paul and Minneapolis
at a special Mass hosted by the Catholic Committee on Scouting in the spring. Watch the ACCS
calendar for more details. (http://accs.nsbsa.org/ACCSCalendar.aspx)
Scouts receiving the Pope Pius XII emblem will receive a certificate and knot upon completion of the
program and it may be presented by their parish or at a unit court of honor at the discretion of the unit
leadership.
Pope Pius XII Facilitators:
Pope Pius XII Facilitators are not teachers. They serve as moderators, resources, and provide
guidance to the participants in completing the requirements for the Emblem. In order to ensure that
each Scout receives the same learning opportunity and that the goals of the program are met, the Pope
Pius XII program may only be presented by a facilitator trained by the Archdiocesan Catholic
Committee on Scouting for the Archdiocese of St Paul and Minneapolis.
To be eligible to serve as Pope Pius XII facilitator the applicant must be at least 21 years old, attend
Mass regularly, must be a Catholic who has participated in the Sacrament of Confirmation, must have
completed BSA Youth Protection Training within the last two years, be a registered member of the
BSA (merit badge counselor registration is sufficient), and complete the ACCS Pope Pius XII
Facilitator training.
Scout's Role:
As an older Scout, the candidate is expected to actively work as a group. The group elects a youth
leader that not only leads in group sessions, but also works with the coordinator to make the
arrangements for interviews, tours, and schedules. This is a role similar to a Venture Crew President.
Group’s Role:
A Pope Pius XII emblem group is made up of no less than three and no more than 12 youth (boys
and girls) that are registered with a Boy Scout of Venture Scout unit. Groups operate much like a
patrol or venture crew. Each group will elect a leader/president that will work with a certified
emblem facilitator to schedule and organize the program for the members of their group. All group
members are expected to actively participate in the emblem program to meet the emblem
requirements.

Participant Presentations
An exciting part of the Pope Pius XII program is the opportunity for participants to prepare and
present on a current issue facing the church and society. Topics for presentation must be approved by
a facilitator by January 31, 2010 so the participant has sufficient time to prepare.
Presentations may be in bulleted form or include multi-media. They may be prepared using MS
Word, MS PowerPoint, docs.google.com, and must include credible sources (other than Wikipedia) –
such as the USCCB, Catechism – in addition to popular media.
The presentation may be done in person or via conference call to at least 50% of the ePopePiusXII
program participants and at least one facilitator. Facilitators may invite past Pope Pius XII emblem
recipients to participate in the audience. Materials must be distributed at least 5 days advance of the
presentation date. Dates and times for presentations will be arranged by the participant and
coordinated by the facilitator. The participant should be prepared to answer questions from their
audience concerning their presentation, topic, and research.
