Wednesday’s matchup marks the first time that South Carolina and Manchester have ever met, as the Monarchs are in only their second ECHL season. Manchester is sitting at the top of the league’s North Division with 59 points while South Carolina is in the middle of a close race in the South Division and tied for 3rd with 49 points. The Monarchs are at the top of the league in both specialty teams categories, with a power play conversion rate at 23.8% and a penalty killing percentage of 87.2%. Manchester is also one of the top offensive teams in the league, averaging 3.93 goals per game, while South Carolina is the No. 1 defense in the ECHL allowing just 2.71 goals per contest. After Wednesday’s game, the series continues with two more matchups on Friday and Saturday. Late Comeback Not Enough As Rays Fall To Atlanta The South Carolina Stingrays scored three straight third period goals to get back in the game but couldn’t find an equalizer in the final minutes and fell 5-4 to the Atlanta Gladiators on Sunday at the North Charleston Coliseum. Rob Flick led the way offensively for the Rays with a goal and an assist in the contest, while Patrick Gaul, Olivier Archambault and Steven McParland each scored third period tallies. Despite more chances in the final minutes and an extra attacker on the ice with Milner on the bench, South Carolina couldn’t produce a fifth tally and dropped their second straight to the Gladiators. The Stingrays out-shot Atlanta 18-4 in the third period and 36-27 in the game while going 2-for-5 on the power play. The Glads were 1-for-2 on the man-advantage. 2016-17 ECHL South Division Standings GP Florida Everblades 41 Greenville Swamp Rabbits43 South Carolina Stingrays 42 Orlando Solar Bears 43 Atlanta Gladiators 43 Cincinnati Cyclones 42 Norfolk Admirals 41 W 28 23 23 21 17 18 15 L OTL SOLPTS PCT GF GA 9 2 2 60 0.732150 117 16 3 1 50 0.581135142 16 2 1 49 0.583127114 15 5 2 49 0.570157158 19 6 1 41 0.477148 164 20 4 0 40 0.476116 125 22 4 0 34 0.415112 148 SOUTH CAROLINA STINGRAYS HOCKEY Scouting The Monarchs Manchester has a record of 26-11-3-4 through their first 44 games of the ECHL regular season and are in first place in the North Division with 59 points despite hitting a slide as of late. Last week the Monarchs came up short in all four of their contests, losing three overtime games to Norfolk before falling to Reading by a score of 6-3 on Sunday. Forward Matt Leitner leads the team with 37 points (nine goals, 28 assists), while rookie Quentin Shore is just behind with 35 points (15 goals, 20 assists). Joe Diamond has scored the most goals of any Monarch forward with 16. David Kolomatis leads the blueliners with 24 points (three goals, 21 assists) through 40 games. Goaltender Sam Brittain has led the way in net, playing in 26 games, but was recently recalled to the NHL by the Florida Panthers. Jonah Imoo will fill in during Brittain’s absence and has a goals against average of 2.91 with a save percentage at .909% with a 6-2-2-2 record in 13 games. Stingrays Set To Write New History vs. Manchester South Carolina and Manchester have never played one another and will meet for the first time on Wednesday night at the SNHU Arena. The contest will be the first of three during the week in Manchester and the first of five total matchups during the month of February as the Monarchs make their first ever trip to North Charleston for a weekend series Feb. 17-18. Flourishing Flick Stingrays forward Rob Flick leads the team with 19 goals on the season and is second on the squad with 36 points. The sixth-year pro has now scored points in nine straight home games dating back to Dec. 10. Flick had a goal and an assist in Friday’s loss to Florida, an assist in Saturday’s win and another goal and assist in Sunday’s loss to Atlanta. Defensive Standouts South Carolina has the top defensive unit in the ECHL, allowing just 2.71 goals per game through 42 contests this season. The Stingrays also allow the least amount of shots on goal per game in the league, giving up an average of 27.24 per contest. Nicastro Comes Alive Defenseman Max Nicastro led the third period comeback in Saturday’s win over Florida, scoring twice in less than a minute. The blueliner notched his second goal of the year on the power play at 1:50 of the period to even the score and came right back at 2:42 to give the Stingrays a 3-2 advantage off a pass from Steven McParland. With the game tied 4-4 in overtime, Nicastro had the first assist on Tim McGauley’s game-winning goal for his third point of the contest. After adding another assist Sunday, Nicastro now has 17 points this season (three goals, 14 assists). Milner Returns After a call-up to the Hershey Bears last week, goaltender Parker Milner was returned to the Stingrays before Sunday afternoon’s game with the Atlanta Gladiators. Milner is second in the ECHL in goals against average with a mark of 2.47. INSIDE THE SERIES Record vs. MAN........... 0-0-0-0 Last 10 vs. MAN........... 0-0-0-0 Streak vs. MAN.................. The game went into overtime before rookie forward Tim McGauley netted the winner with his second career goal for the Stingrays. Sunday’s game also featured some third period dramatics as South Carolina attempted a late comeback after trailing 4-1 entering the final period.
