Preview the story and look at illustrations and predict
what will happen to the main character, Hsiang-ling.
 How would you describe Hsiang-ling? (beautiful,
intelligent, spoiled)
 Compare & Contrast Hsiang-ling and servant
 Setting
 Why does the author mention that Hsiang-ling is not
mean-spirited?
-Why do you think Hsiang-ling instructs her maid not to
mention her name? What does this tell the reader about
Hsiang-ling’s character?
-Consider whether what Hsiang-ling has done with the purse
is the right or wrong thing to do. Predict how this incident
might give rise to other events in the story.

End of the Story: Think Critically
1. Both Fernando in “At the Beach” and Hsiang-ling in The Ch’i-lin Purse “Do the right thing” when the time comes. Compare
Fernandos decision to tell the truth to Mami and Hsiang-ling’s decision to give her purse away. How are their motivations the
same? How are they different?
2. In ancient times, someone told, wrote or painted this story. Then it was handed down for generations. Why? What makes this
story important to pass down?
3. Look back on pages 240-241 and 248-249, Compare and Contrast what the two women did for each other and why they did it?
4. When is it revealed that Hsiang-ling’s decision to give away her purse was a good one?
