Hi APUSHers! We are so excited to have you in AP United States History for the 2016-2017 school year. It is going to be
an awesome year.

D.
ONE 3-5 subject notebook (300 pages or more)
ONE Binder (1-1.5 inch)
Blue or black pens, pencils, & highlighters
If cost is an issue please email us immediately!
First Assignment:
1. Get your materials
2. Clearly label the front cover of your five subject notebook with YOUR NAME, APUSH Out-Of-Class Notebook (this
notebook will be graded upon request—HUGE part of your grade) Cut out words & pictures from magazines that
represent you and glue them to the front cover of your out-of-class notebook. You may include cutout pictures
from family and friends as well to give me a feel for what you are about (these photos will be permanently
attached to notebook so choose wisely) Use 2” clear packing tape and seal your images on the front cover of
your notebook. (I recommend taping top to bottom and having about 1” extra to attach to the other side)
3. The most important thing to remember…you are taking the APUSH test! You must talk history! This means you
must own the history and be able to talk about many different time periods.
Part I: American History-Textbook work
Textbook for this class: American History by Alan Brinkley – to complete the summer assignment you can access the
chapter online here - https://tinyurl.com/mk4nwyp
Supplementary Text: United States History AMSCO: Preparing for the AP Exam (2016)
*We will have a PDF version of this on ItsLearning or we recommend you purchase it here:

Read Chapter One of our textbook & take notes. We will be taking notes thematically throughout the year but for
Chapter one, you can do it chronologically. However, writing down a random sentence every few paragraphs will not
benefit your comprehension of the content in the long run. What to do that is more effective is summarize IN YOUR
OWN WORDS after you read a couple of paragraphs or specifically, write down things that are unfamiliar to you and
what YOU think about those events or people.
1. Define and briefly explain the significant terms below from Chapter One of the American History textbook. Must
be HANDWRITTEN and must use the TEXTBOOK as your source of information (internet ONLY for clarification)
((DO NOT JUST GO TO WIKIPEDIA AND TYPE THE FIRST SENTENCE YOU READ))
Part II: American History chapter questions during the school year
You are to copy and paste Chapters 1 questions into a Word document and put enough space in between each question
to HANDWRITE in your answers (you will repeat this process for all 32 chapters). These are to be added into your APUSH
binder (this way you will have both the questions and answers for all of the chapter questions in order to study for inclass Chapter quizzes & discussions). That’s right, you have all of the questions that could be on each quiz so make sure
you are prepared weekly for the chapter quizzes. These questions help you TREMENDOUSLY on the AP US History test!
Part III: Mapping and Discussing American Indians
Using the included map and your textbook, identify the locations of the given American Indian nations, conflicts and
geographical regions. On a separate sheet of paper, choose one of the following prompts and write 4-5 paragraphs that
answer the question:
1. Compare & Contrast the different lifestyles of pre-Columbus Native Americans and the role geography
played in their existence. (Compare & Contrast)
2. What was the cause & effect of European exploration and how did that impact both Native American and
European life? (Causation)
3. Compare & Contrast the different relationships between Native Americans with European countries such as
Spain, France, & Britain.
Part IV: 13 Colonies Chart
Fill in the attached chart on the original 13 colonies. Use the link to the textbook provided or look up the colonies
