Kuranui Korero 24 May 2013 Week 4-5, Term 2 "Be the best you can be" “Whaia te iti kahurangi, ki te tuohu koe, me maunga teitei!” Tena tatou katoa Synthetic Cannabis The national media has recently highlighted the potential for our young people to be seriously affected by synthetic cannaboid substances which are available for sale in a number of our local dairies. It is very clear from the research that these products can cause serious and possibly lasting side effects such as hysteria, aggression, paranoia, depression and memory loss. A quick visit to the dairies in the Southern Wairarapa showed that at least two are selling synthetic cannabis and although it is restricted for sale to people eighteen years and older, younger people can certainly obtain it if they want it. On your behalf I thank those responsible dairy owners who have refused to sell these products. As a community we should work together to encourage all retail outlets to stop selling these harmful substances. Parents, please talk to your children about the very real dangers synthetic cannabis poses to them and encourage them to make safe, sensible decisions. Teacher Only Day The college will be closed for instruction on Tuesday June 4th to allow our teaching staff to meet in subject clusters with other teachers from all of the Wairarapa secondary schools. The meetings will focus on the realignment of NZQA achievement and unit standards at NCEA Level 3. NZQA Fees Students must pay their NZQA fees to have their results recorded on their Record of Achievement, and to receive certificates. For 2013 the fees are unchanged. The $76.70 must be paid to the school by Friday September 6. After this date they must be paid directly to NZQA; if the fees are not received by NZQA by December 1 they will charge an additional $50 late fee. Financial Assistance can be applied for if a family cannot afford to pay these fees. To get this, parents or caregivers must be receiving a Work and Income or StudyLink benefit or have a Community Services Card. Qualification for Financial Assistance reduces the fees to $20. Application forms for Financial Assistance can be downloaded from the NZQA website or obtained from the college office. Board of Trustees Election You will have recently received a Board of Trustees voting form in the mail. Don’t forget to vote and return your voting form by noon on Thursday 30 May. Matariki Dinner – 13 July 2013 This year’s Matariki dinner has a different focus. The year of 1963 are using this time to celebrate “50 years” onwards with reminiscences and recollections of the “Sam Meads” era. Join this group as they celebrate the “good old days”. Tickets are $75 and are available from the school office. If you know of any ex students who were at school in the 1960’s, please let them know of this reunion and suggest they get together and book a table. The dinner is not restricted to past students. Get your friends together and book a table. It will be a great evening. Below are the results for Kuranui College: Level 1 82.9% (Our target was 85%) Level 2 89.8% (Our target was 82%) Level 3 78% (Our target was 78%) Endorsements: Level 1 27.9% gained Merit, 5.9% Excellence Level 2 12.5% Merit, 1.9% Excellence Level 3 18.1% Merit We can be very pleased with the NCEA results at all levels but there is still room for improvement. Our goals for this year are slightly higher in all areas and we will work very hard with every student to ensure that they get the most out of the year. We believe that the most effective way of lifting each student’s individual achievement is by Checking with them regularly and discussing their progress. To help you keep up to date with their progress, we are about to enable you to log on to our KAMAR student management system where you will be able to see exactly how your child’s NCEA results are tracking. You will also be able to view your child’s attendance data. When we are ready to open the “parent portal” we will send home a password for you to use. Uniform The weather is becoming colder so, parents, you need to ensure that your children have warm tops and appropriate jackets or blazers. We now have good stocks of winter uniform Kuranui College Jackets $99, Striped Scarfs $20, School Beanies $27, Jerseys $89. We have some second hand blazers and new ones can be ordered at the uniform shop. Please do not allow your children to wear any old jacket or sweat shirt to school. We work very hard to continually improve our community’s view of the college and scruffy, out of uniform students instantly damage our reputation. Winter Sports Winter sports are underway and I am very pleased with the numbers of students playing for teams in all sporting codes. Now that students have made a commitment to a team is very important that they honour that commitment by attending all practices and turning out for every game. There is nothing more disheartening and demoralising for teams and coaches than to have players not attend practices or worse, not front up for games. Respect is a key value at the college. Poor attendance at practice and games is disrespectful of the team, the coach and the college. Our college motto Tatau Tatau translates as “strength through unity.” Teams get strength and unity by practising together and they develop trust and confidence in each other. Top teams in all sports should be wearing either college track suits or formal uniform to and from their games. I am a firm believer that teams whose players all arrive smartly dressed send a clear message to their opposition as well as demonstrating loyalty and commitment to the college. Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease Local doctors have advised us that there have been some cases of this condition diagnosed amongst our students. The symptoms of this disease are small blisters on the hands, around the mouth and sometimes on the soles of the feet and it is often accompanied by a mild fever. It is highly contagious so if your child is diagnosed, please keep them at home until all symptoms have gone. The doctors tell us that there is a lot of this in early childhood centres at the moment. For expert advice, phone the Healthline on 0800 611116. Winter Camps The Scripture Union is advertising an interesting range of camps for the next holidays. See Mrs Banks for more details. Stage Challenge Students rehearsing “Trapped in the App” in the auditorium Nearly one hundred students are frantically rehearsing and preparing for Stage Challenge next Friday night at the Events centre in Wellington. The eight minute performance of “Trapped in the App” warns against the obsessive use of computers. A large back stage crew of students and parents have been busy making costumes, building and painting set and preparing the musical sound track. On Friday of next week a convoy of cars, trucks and buses will take the performers, crew and the very large set to the Wellington Events Centre. During the day they will get to rehearse on the main stage, add in lighting effects and practise moving the set on and off stage quickly and quietly. Lions Club “GASTRONOMIE OF GREYTOWN” Recipe Book The recipe book featuring recipes gathered from the Greytown community and illustrated with photos by well-known Wairarapa photographer, Geoff Walker, is a worthy addition to your recipe book collection. The recipes are family favourites, some with a bit of history and others from businesses in Greytown. From next week the books can be purchased for $25.00 per copy at the following retail outlets in Greytown; Fresh Choice, Adorne, Pinehaven Orchards, Essentially You and Take Note in Carterton. All the proceeds from the sale of the books go towards the Lions Club of Greytown Youth Fund to assist local youth. This is a worthwhile cause and a great gift for family and friends.
