HE Business Journal expanded its list
this year to include the top 100 law
firms in Los Angeles County ranked by
number of attorneys in local offices. The top 100
firms employ 7,433 attorneys in the county. The
aggregate figure is negligibly down by 17 attorneys compared with a year ago.
There are 17 firms with at least 100
attorneys in local offices, led by Gibson
Dunn & Crutcher LLP with 262. It is followed by O’Melveny & Myers LLP and
Lewis Brisbois Bisgaard & Smith LLP with
259 and 257, respectively.
At O’Melveny, profits per partner
increased by $195,000 to $1.72 million for
the fiscal year ended Jan. 31. The firm saw
total revenue fall slightly from $782 million
in 2010 to $779 million last year.
No. 4 Latham & Watkins LLP reported
rising revenue and profits per partner. The
firm saw revenue increase from $1.93 billion in 2010 to $2.15 billion last year. Profits per partner increased from just under $2
million to $2.27 million last year.
Larger law practices are concentrated
in two main areas: downtown Los Angeles, where 55 list offices, and Century
City, where 28 have offices. Some firms,
including Gibson Dunn & Crutcher and
O’Melveny & Myers, have offices in both
places. Thirteen of the listed firms have
more than one office.
Overall, the 100 largest firms have 3,092
partners in the county.

OR the first time in 20 years, L.A. has a new
largest law firm: Gibson Dunn & Crutcher
LLP.
Gibson Dunn had held the top spot back in
the late 1980s, the heyday of the “L.A. Law” TV
phenomenon. Then O’Melveny & Myers LLP
surpassed Gibson Dunn in 1991 and maintained
the top ranking for the next 20 years. But this year,
O’Melveny reported a drop of 36 attorneys to 259
at its two L.A. offices as the firm has been tranBertero
sitioning to a more national focus. That allowed
Gibson Dunn, which only dropped six attorneys,
to slip back into the No. 1 slot, with 262 attorneys
at its downtown L.A. and Century City offices.
“Our offices are doing well in Los Angeles,
with no major cutbacks,” said Gibson Dunn Chairman Ken Doran.
Attorneys at the L.A. offices have been busy
working on global cases, especially in the firm’s
burgeoning transnational litigation practice. Last
year, the firm defended Chevron Corp. against
charges related to oil spills in Ecuador and Dole
Dusseault
Food Co. against allegations by banana crop
workers of excessive use of pesticides in Central
America.
Gibson Dunn attorneys last year also argued five cases before the
U.S. Supreme Court, two of which resulted in successful outcomes for
clients. The high court ruled in favor of Wal-Mart Stores Inc., denying
class-action status to female employees claiming discrimination. The
court also ruled in favor of Janus Capital Group Inc., saying the New
York securities firm could not be held liable for drafting allegedly misleading prospectuses for the mutual funds it advises.
“These were the two most important cases before the Supreme Court
last year affecting global business,” Doran said.
