Adapter Cards and Expansion Ports

Adapter Cards and Expansion
Ports
There are several types of adapter cards,
but the majority of them use PCI, PCIe,
and AGP expansion slots.
 Adapter cards allow users to install more
powerful components than those
embedded on the motherboard and the
addition of features not originally available
with their systems.

Peripheral Component Interconnect

PCI is the oldest expansion slot still
common on motherboards. It has mostly
been replaced by AGP and PCI Express
slots.
Accelerated Graphics Port

AGP provided much faster speeds for
video cards than PCI, but it has mostly
been replaced by PCI Express.
PCI Express

PCI Express is currently used for video
cards and other adapter cards. Different
speed slots are used for different types of
devices.
Expansion Slots
This motherboard has two green PCIe 16x
slots, two white PCI slots, and one white
PCIe 1x slot.
