Fiber Optic Wiring Guidelines
RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION/REMODELING
THESE GUIDELINES WILL HELP YOU PROVIDE THE ADDED
FLEXIBILITY FOR A FUTURE-READY FIBER OPTIC HOME
THE RIGHT WIRING
•Fi-Speed Internet – use Cat 5e. For optimum future readiness, each living
space should be pre-wired with dual jacks with coax and Cat 5e at every coax
location. Note that GIG speed Internet uses all 8 wires of a Cat 5e cable and
therefore two Cat 5e feeds are needed if Fi Phone will be utilized.
•Fi TV – for reduced interference and better picture quality, use either
Tri- or Quad-shield RG-6 coax, with a 77% high-density braid or higher.
(costs about $6 more than 60% coax for a 2,500 square foot home)
•Fi Phone – use Cat 5e to each phone jack location.
THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT
•“Home Run” Box – all dual coax and Cat 5e wiring should be run from a
single distribution box located in garage, closet or basement with an electrical
outlet to make it easier for homeowners to change locations of TV, phone and
computer equipment in the future. Also, running 1” conduit from this box to an
open attic or crawl space will make it easier to add wiring options in the future.
•ONT & Battery Boxes – both required for EPB Fiber Optics services, these
outdoor boxes adjacent to the electric meter center provide connectivity as
well as important safety bonding to minimize the risk of electric shock and
reduce equipment damage.
•Meter Collar/Power Stick – added to EPB’s electric meter, provides
power to the fiber optic equipment as well as a communications connection
between the electric system and the home.

HOME RUN WIRING
• For Fi-Speed Internet service,
make sure the router is located at the
“Home Run” Box, along with a power
outlet. And, ensure that the 1” conduit
path to the outside ONT has no more
than two 90-degree bends in order to
ensure optimal service quality. ight
