Annual Conferences of Madhya Pradesh Economic Association
7-8 February, 2014
Dear Sir / Madam,
It is a great privilege to acknowledge you that the 24th Annual Conferences of the Madhya
Pradesh Economic Association (MPEA) along with a National Seminar would be held on 7-8
February 2014 at the School of Economics, Devi Ahilya University, Indore
It will provide a platform to all distinguished faculty, MPEA members, researchers, participants
and eminent scholars, of their presentation, publication, discussion & intellectual views on the
following two themes. The publication of the journal aims at identifying and suggesting potential
solution to the problems encountered in the process of development of Madhya Pradesh as well
as India. The topics of discussion in the 24th conference are1. Contemporary Demographic Structure of India and its Economic Impact.
2. Infrastructure and Economic Development of Madhya Pradesh.
Their brief description is as under:
I. Contemporary Demographic Structure of India and its Economic Impact
India is experiencing a historic moment in terms of its demographic profile. While the rest of
the world is ageing, India is getting younger with every passing day. This is happening as India
is in that golden stage where its mortality rate has reduced significantly primarily due to
increased modern medical amenities while its birth rate has not come down. This has resulted in
an increased demographic-dividend for the economy. Demographic-dividend implies a
significant ‘bulge’ in the working age group of the population. It has been widely speculated that
this will provide acceleration to the growth momentum of the economy.
However, this
optimistic picture disguises associated challenges of realizing these cherished projections. There
are also concerns about the scenario of subsequent ageing of the ‘young India’ in future. We aim
to discuss both opportunities and challenges related to this historic demographic transition
comprehensively as well as in a case study manner. With these perspectives in mind, research
papers are sought on the following themes for discussion in the conference.
·
Demographic dividend and Indian Economy.
·
Increased Aged Population and its economic implications.
·
Study of Gender balance in Young India.
·
Education, Employment, Health, Sanitation and Security in India with changing
demographic attributes.
·
Socio-economic implications of changing demographic structure of India.
II.
Infrastructure and Economic Development of Madhya Pradesh.
Madhya Pradesh has been emerging a key player in defining and sustaining the growth
momentum of the Indian economy as a whole. One of the major deficiencies experienced in
the growth momentum in the State is the infrastructural deficit, which needs to be very
strategically addressed. The positive relationship between infrastructure and economic
growth as well as development is well-known, and requires little further elaboration. Basic
infrastructure such as electrification plays a similar role, apart from changing the quality of
life in general. We would like to briefly examine the interrelationship between infrastructure
and economic development, and also between infrastructure and poverty reduction for the
state of Madhya Pradesh in particular. Hence research papers may be developed keeping the
above mentioned view point. Following themes may also be taken help of for writing them.
·
Basic infrastructural development and improvement of socio-economic indicators in
Madhya Pradesh.
·
Issues of Local Entrepreneurship and their positive spill-over effects in Madhya
Pradesh.
·
Economic Reforms in context of Development infrastructure in the state of MadhyaPradesh.
We request you to kindly contribute a research paper on any of these themes. Research papers
and articles (not exceeding 3000 words in Hindi or English) accompanied with an abstract in
250 words are invited on the above topics. The papers must be written in Microsoft Word 2003
using Times New Roman (12) font for English and KrutiDev 30 font for Hindi papers and
abstracts. The research paper and abstract along with the confirmation of registration should
reach the Organizing Secretary latest by 15 January, 2014. The papers and/or abstracts will be
published in the journal only after the recommendation of the editorial board. The papers should
be submitted to the Prof. Kanhaiya Ahuja, Managing editor of MPEA Journal by email
[email protected]. The papers for the conference may also be emailed
to
[email protected] and [email protected]. The authors who have already sent
their papers in the month of February-March 2013 for Sagar Conference are requested to
resend the same for our convenience. The editor board reserves the right to edit research papers
to conform with the themes of this conference.
National Seminar on Trade and Development
The School of Economics, a university teaching department of Devi Ahilya University,
Indore, is also organizing a two days National Seminar on “Trade and Development” during
this period under UGC- SAP at DRS-II level. How trade affects development? Trade has the
capacity to foster economic growth through a variety of factors work in tandem for achieving
this goal. This seminar is aimed to explore the linkages between trade and development in
today’s competitive domestic and global scenario.
Textbook economic theories generally support trade and foreign direct investments as
harbingers of efficiency benefits and as promoters of international division of labour. This
further leads to dissemination of technological knowledge and thereby aids in the process of
economic growth and eradication of poverty. Thus trade is being visualized as an engine of
growth and development. But, theories often fail to offer precise guidance that is decisive when
it comes to policy-making in a scenario ridden with protectionism, terms of trade distortion and
increasing regionalization of trade. This, in turn, leads to emergence of alternative views on
effects of trade on development and the debate over the preferred course of action begins.
This seminar under UGC-SAP of the department, aims to enhance understanding on both
theoretical and practical aspects of the interrelationship between trade and development and its
sustainability. An allied objective is to empirically investigate trade and development linkages
with broader issues of environment, migration, human-rights, sustainability, technology, poverty,
equity as well as democracy. The following themes may be considered for contribution of papers
in the seminar
·
·
·
·
·
·
Relation between Trade Liberalisation and Growth Process
Trade Liberalisation and Poverty Alleviation
Trade Agriculture and environment
Trade, Investment and Transfer of Technology
Trade Issues : Special and Differential Treatment
Trade in services and economic development.
