Game 1 – v Northside Just as in the previous Chaddy End tournament, the Lions started confidently with good passing and movement. There were other similarities too with Sam in fine goal-scoring form again scoring twice in the game. There were more positives to come when both Harry and Marcus scored from distance and there was also an exquisite chip over the keeper by Cameron. Game 2 – Rossendale Valley In our next game we played a good Rossendale team whom defended well and we failed to find the net. 0-0 it finished and as a result we had dropped our first points of the tournament. We were now wondering if this goalless draw would again prove crucial come the end of the group games. Game 3 – Rossendale Valley Wasps Our opponents for this game did not attend the tournament so we were awarded a 1-0 victory. Game 4 – Chadderton FC Juniors 'A' With Areon in goal and both Lucas and Jack in defence we defended well. Cian was working hard up front and everyone's hard work was rewarded when Joe found Marcus who then ran forward before scoring his second goal of the tournament. Game 5 – Chadderton FC Juniors 'B' The Lions confidence was clearly high now. Harry calmly scored his second of the tournament early on in the game. However, as we pushed forward looking for another goal, we left the door open for a counter attack and Chaddy B took full advantage to equalise late on. Game 6 – Boundary Park 'A' A quick check of the scoreboard showed that Boundary 'A' were the team to beat. Unbeaten in their opening 5 games and without conceding a single goal. This was not going to be an easy game. BP 'A' showed good on the ball skills and positional awareness and they quickly created a two goal lead. BP 'A' were also defending valiantly too and we could not get a goal back. The defeat was a wake-up call for the Lions and another look at the scoreboard proved that progressing past the group stage was not going to be easy. Game 7 – Boundary Park 'B' Normal service was resumed in the final group game. Jack was on fire and quickly scored two goals as he kept driving confidently forward with the ball. Sam scored too to make it 3 for the tournament. With time running out, Cian came close to also scoring had it not been for a fine save by the BP keeper. The Lions had done enough though to make it through to the semi-finals, finishing second in the group. Semi-Final - v Chadderton FC Juniors 'A' Chadderton threatened to score throughout the game but Areon was in great form, making some fine saves on a number of occasions. This goalkeeping display inspired confidence and determination in the rest of the team – Lucas made a couple of important tackles, whilst at the other end Lions were getting closer to making a breakthrough. Eventually, great goals from Joe(1) and Sam(2 – top scorer) put the game beyond Chadderton's reach. We now had to beat Boundary 'A' in the final, the only team to have beaten us so far in the competition. Everyone knew that Lions would have to raise their game if they were to win it. Final – v Boundary Park 'A' Boundary put pressure on the Lions defence for large parts of the game, creating a number of opportunities. One of those opportunities was duly taken when a shot from Boundary flew past Areon into the bottom left corner. The Lions heads went down briefly but there was time to get back in it. The Lions work rate increased and we started to make our own chances. Cameron was now the lone front man and when a pass found him unmarked, he ran forward towards their Keeper before unleashing a shot into the top corner. Superb goal! Lions now had the momentum and they kept driving forward. With time running out, the ball came to Joe near the corner flag who turned and from a tight angle lifted the ball high over the keeper before falling just inside the far post for 2-1. The Lions now had to defend against a Chadderton team who were urgently looking for an equaliser. However, defend they did. Some parents are on the pitch, they think it's all over..... Once again, many thanks to the Parents, Grandparents, family and friends for your fantastic support. Well done boys and well done Jason & Mike! Finally, a special thanks to Areon for soaring like an Eagle.
