S234 Adventure Education 2008/2009 Semester 2 Understand Test 3 Grade C 1) Speed can be defined as the rate and direction of the change in the position of an object. This definition can be represented by the following formula: S = (x2 – x1) / (t2 – t1) Where S = Speed, t = time, x1 = position at t1, x2=position at t2 You are planning to use improvised raft activity (see figure in the other question) to teach the stated concept of speed to a group of secondary 1 students. Please provide input for the following sections of the lesson plan: Two safety precautions (2 marks) Activity sequence (4 marks) Another one possible academic subject that can be delivered using rafting. Give brief explanation. (2 mark) Two safety precautions: - the students will need to wear their safety helmet and life jacket on as it is a water activity. - set the rules clearly and the instructions. it would be good to emphasise on the important things, so that everyone would take more cautios of it. also as participants, they would need to follow the rules and the instructions as it is. This is to avoid any mishap to happen during the activity. Activity Sequence: - Pre activity brienfing. - Doing of the activity - Post activity briefing, and reflection to what they have learn and how they could relate it. Another one possible academic subject that can be delivered using rafting Marks : 3 out of 8. 2) There are challenges to overcome for teachers to conduct academic lesson in an outdoor environment. Identify two possible challenges teachers may face in the Singapore context and also explain briefly how you can manage the challenges. (6 marks)<? 2 possible learning points that students can take away from the improvised raft activity are: - Teamwork, communication and cooperation. They will learn that everyone needs to play their part to ensure that the improvised raft will stay on water and not sink or float apart. To do that, everyone will have to given a fair chance to contribute whatever they cant. This would encourage more social and personal learning to the students. Students will also learn that it is important to ensure a effective communication so as to avoid any unnecessary disagreements or arguments. They will also need to cooperate with one another and learning to accept ideas, stregths, and even flaws through the activity. Through the experience of the activity, they would be able to apply it to the present moment. From here students will actually learn that the 'must uphold meritocracy and incorruptibility' - They will learn that, they will definitely need to work something out for the raft and also they couldnt rely on others for them to survive. This will ensure that they gain self confidence, resilience and even a can-do spirit. From here students will understnd that noone owes Singapore a living. They will need to find their ways to live and also from the activity, they will change the challenge into an opportunity. Besides, they will be more prepared to overcome constraints and vulnerabilities Marks : 5 out of 6. 3) In a National Education (NE) Camp for Republic Polytechnic students, you are asked to carry out an improvised raft activity (see figure below) to impart the NE messages to students. Describe 2 possible learning points that students can take away from the improvised raft activity and explain how it can be related to the NE key messages. (6 marks) The 6 key messages of National Education (NE) are: A. Singapore is our homeland; this is where we belong – we treasure our heritage and take pride in shaping our own unique way of life. B. We must preserve racial and religious harmony – we value our diversity and are determined to stay a united people. C. We must uphold meritocracy and incorruptibility – we provide opportunities for all, according to their ability and effort. D. No one owes Singapore a living – we find our own way to survive and prosper, turning challenge into opportunity. E. We must ourselves defend Singapore – we are proud to defend Singapore ourselves, no one else is responsible for our security and well-being. F. We have confidence in our future – united, determined and well-prepared, we have what it takes to build a bright future for ourselves, and to progress together as one nation. Two possible challenges teachers may face in singapore context are - Ratio of staffs to student. To conduct a lesson outside of the classroom, more teachers are probably needed. Thus, in order to manage this, perhaps the school could appoint a full time outdoor coordinator to oversee the curriculum. -Disruption of classes : and to manage this, i think the teachers Marks : 3 out of 6.
