Project
One of the main aims of this course is to think about both how traditional modes of western
education that center on school and the classroom and about alternatives–learning that happens
elsewhere, theories of education that challenge western hierarchies. To that end this class has two
main assignments: a traditional single authored paper and a more experimental out-side the class
group project. In this latter project, students will craft their own theory of education and then put
that theory into practice by designing and implementing alternative school or learning
experiences outside the classroom and the traditional setting of school (meaning off-campus). Like
the paper assignment, this project involves several scaffolding exercises throughout the semester as
a way to help your group think and plan this project thoroughly.
Group Sizes: 4-5 people.
▪ Each Final Project Must Have:
*Timely completion of all pre-project assignments
*A 3-5 page write up [that discusses the group’s theory, objectives, methodology +rationale,
description of the actual schooling moment, results, and reflection of the results.]
*Group meeting with professor
*Presentation to the class
*Visual and/or audio documentation of the alternative school taking place

Wednesday (in the normal class
room)
▪ PLEASE plan to arrive five minutes
early and be able to stay five minutes
later so that transition between
groups can go smoothly.
▪ In this meeting you should be able to
walk me through all the parts of your
project. You should also identify your
group’s biggest questions/concerns.

• a desired result that a person or a
system envisions, plans and commits to
achieve: a personal or organizational
desired end-point in some sort of
assumed development.
Points of Action (Method)
• Your methodology
▪ Your philosophy must include
references to the course material, but
it may also reference other cultural
texts.
▪ You should have 2-3 objectives for
your ASM (these are the actions and
results you ultimately want to see
your ASM produce. You should
explain how your objectives reflects
your theory.
▪ You methods must include an
explanation of how the method helps
achieve one of your objectives.
Project Write Up
You should make this draft as complete and as clean as possible.
However you may still be working on the actual implementation of the alternative school, so you
might not have much to say in the description of the moment and the results and reflection part.
You should be able to at least have a draft of
1) your group’s guiding theory
2) your group’s three primary objectives
3) your methods and a rationale for how the methods reflect your objectives
4) and some discussion about how you think you might be able to assess whether or not your
objectives are met and your audience participates and/or receives as you were hoping they would.
Assignment Grade
You will receive a provisional grade based on:
1) Timely completion
2) you address each of the four must include sections
3) how well you articulate your theory and reference any relevant thinkers
4) how well you connect your objectives to your theory.
5) how well you explain your methods in relationship to your objectives.
[I will give you a grade for each of these five areas and average the grade. Note timely completion is a matter of
an A or an F, so it either helps or hurts.]
