Career-Technical Education 2011
Graduate Follow-Up Survey
David Torres-RCCD Institutional Research
Background: The Riverside Community College District Institutional Research department was
awarded Career Technical Education (CTE) grant to conduct follow-up interviews with students
who successfully completed certificates and degrees to determine satisfaction with RCCD’s
education. During the months of February and April 2011, telephone interviews were
conducted Mondays through Thursday evenings (from 5:30pm to 8:30pm). Students who
graduated from RCCD with an award or certificate in a Career-Technical Education field in the
previous three years were included in the sample. The results listed below are the result of 670
completed interviews. (A total of 729 interviews were conducted, but only 670 answered all
questions.)

Other Comments:
At the end of the survey, respondents were given the opportunity to make any comments on
their experiences at RCCD. Given the wide variety of perspectives, the complete, unedited
comments are included in Appendix C. To summarize the responses they were recoded using
the following classification system: each comment was judged to be either positive or negative/
and whether the comment referred to the institute in general, or referred to a person (usually
and instructor), program or service, a mixed response, or in some other unclassifiable category.
The result of this recoding is shown in the table below.

Over 76% of all recoded responses contained positive responses about particular programs,
services, personnel or about the college/district in general.
Summary: The findings of this telephone survey largely support the proposition that graduates
from Career and Technical Education programs are successful in their post-RCCD employment.
Furthermore, over 70% of the employed students responded positively when asked whether
they were able to secure a better job as a result of attending one of RCCD’s CTE programs.
Respondents in this sample were employed mainly in the Public Safety and Health/Medical
industries, and tended to be employed locally in Riverside County. This survey is scheduled to
be conducted again in April-May 2012.

a lot of preferences going on in police academy/law enforcement program.
very dissappointed: the sheriffs were unfair. 2 people made same
mistakes but if the sheriff liked one, then he would be in and they would
do anything they could just to discourage the other from attending the
program.
a very good program. teachers were great.
add more classes to the program, more specific classes to interpretation
program, concentrate on one subject instead of combining too many
subjects in one class.
Air conditioning & mechanical engineering programs were great. you'd get
out a lot from the teachers there.
all professors were wonderful. but the nursing program was great. all staff
at hospital was always excited to see students from RCCD. RCCD has the
best nursing program, even better than 4-yr universities.
all teachers in business dept were great people. both on -campus and online classes were helpful.

Difficult getting classes for RN. Need more classes.
1
Felt it was very difficult to get classes and that is why it took her so long to
graduate.
1
increase classes, more options, not enough classes offered. students not
getting into classes.
1
it was hard to get into programs because of required classes
1
its a shame that so many classes got cut back.
1
more class offerings needed. more online classes too.
1
More online courses offered -- offer more classes at more convenient
times, not just summers. Had problems receiving the degree and
credentials she earned. some instructors better than others. Had a very
poor customer service experience with the evaluations units.
1
need a better counseling system, more personal relationship w/ students.
Need for more Saturday and Online Clases
Need to improve the certificate, it was low quality, not appropriate to put
on the wall. looked like a computer print out.
Parking issues, not handicap friendly. Wouldn't have chosen to gothere but
it was the only school close. Feels they have self-serving professors
preaching their own personal programs and felt some of the professors
were unethical.
Registration is always packed, computers are down all the time. Need
improvement to help students registering eaiser & faster.
so hard to register for classes. very frustrating.
too hard to register for classes, colleges don't offer enough classes.
Wanted to retake a math class to refresh memory for work and could
not???

dental program is not the best program at rcc. did not like the staff.
dental program was not pleasurable
Feels they need more counseling sessions for the students.
Got her certificate in Cosmotology. However, they need to work on it to
make it better. Needs to be more competitive so that the students can
learn more skills.

having hard time to get transcript on line. please help!
Heating & Air Conditioning program could be better organized, s/b more
student focus, kind of detached.
its hard to get into nursing program.
LVN program doesn't have the support to transfer from LV to RN. not
enough classes, not enough program, very competitive. so hard for
students to register.
need more ECE classes at Norco
need more ECE classes at the Norco campus
need to have more of interpreting classes of higher level, instead of just
basic classes.
para legal program is not aba acreddited
problem with the way they allow lvn to become rns.
Program was limited - liked to have more charting clinical exp, Nursing and prioritizing on the job, incl this into the theory classes.
Regarding the Human Services courses, some of the classes seem like they
don't really push you to continue to a 4 year school or in the workplace.
school needs to help students in getting the permits such as paperwork
and financing. Maybe have a workshop to help students filling out all
these forms and apps for permits.
should have offered courses on line so students can fisnish their program,
such as English or math. This is the reason why I'm no longer at RCC.
the program could use some changes. way too much focus on type of "boot
camp" but not enough training on real law enforcement.
They need to evaluate the LVN Professors as the testing did not seem
current. They were testing the students on things that they weren't
neccesarily going over in class.
Took Engineering courses - wishes they had a more wider range classes.
Took the nursing program and felt that they go over the same things in lab
as they do in the lecture and felt it was unnecessary. Also feels there are
alot of classes that should be offered online instead of in person.

business dept was always helpful. please if you can - need to help
students w/ books, make it more affordable, maybe online books, or
renting books.
completed the dental program but had to wait 2 years to take state exams
to get license. Was told that school was in process of obtaining
accreditation and would not be a problem by the time of my graduation
but that never happend. very frustrated and wished school would have
handled better.
Did not like having to deal with the conselors on campus, especially at the
Moreno Valley campus. The Riverside campus and MV campus conselors
would tell her 2 different things in regards to the classes/course she would
need to take. Did not seem very helpful. She praised Jeff Townsell, the
financial aid officer at the Rvsd/MV campus, as he was the only one who
really helped her. mv camps told diff thing everytime...mv camous..jeff
townsell financial aid officer...
Enjoyed downtown campus more than Moreno Valley campus. Liked the
culture and they were more friendly. Took Accounting program and feels
that there are classes that need to be taught there that are not being
offered. Also feels that the accounting department needs some
improvements.

enjoyed it. need more classses. make classes more affordable.
1
Enjoyed program. Needs to have a better time frame with those that work
and go to school. More flexible with needs with those participating in the
Associate of Nursing programs.
1
EOPSn is a great program but don't understand why a student w/ a child can
get so much more help than a student w/o a child. seems unfair. also,
maybe provide more staff for EOPS as sometimes students miss their appt
at MoValley campus & have to go to Riverside campus but can't make it and
get kicked out of program. Some students have limited mean of time and
transportation, and they do need help from EOPS to continue their
education.

One suggestion - he feels that all students should have a parking permit
and that the parking permit should be paid for by tuition cost.

being offered at RCC.

Appendix D: Demography of the sample
The tables below illustrate the differences between the survey sample and the universe of
possible respondents. The column at the right shows the difference in the percentage for each
student group. Positive differences indicate sample overrepresentation of that characteristic
relative to the college overall population.
The table below shows that in the present survey sample, students categorized as “Other” (that
is, not fitting into one of the specifically defined ethnic groups) were overrepresented by 5%,
and Hispanic students were underrepresented by 4%. Females were underrepresented in this
sample by 4%. For age groups, students over 25 were overrepresented by 7.4%. The
differences within these groups are generally small enough to accept that the sample surveyed
replicates the universe of possible respondents.
