June 2017 The American Board of Pediatrics 2014

June 2017
The American Board of Pediatrics
2014-2016 Pediatric Training Program Pass Rates
What data are reported?
This report contains information about the general pediatric certifying examination performance of programs
accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and the Royal College of
Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC). For each residency program listed in the following pages, the ABP
reports the cumulative pass rate for 2014 to 2016 certifying examinations in general pediatrics. US programs are
listed first by state abbreviation, followed by Canadian programs. Within state or province, programs are listed
alphabetically by city. This report is updated once a year.
What are the changes in this report from prior reports?
There are three changes in this report: 1) for each program, this report lists the number of candidates who took
the examination, the number who passed, and the percent that passed. The number of eligible is removed; 2) the
confidence interval of the pass rate is removed. Caution should be exercised in interpreting the pass rates,
especially for programs with fewer than 25 examinees in a three-year period; 3) to align with the ABP time-limited
eligibility policy, candidates included in the report completed their residency training within previous seven years,
instead of within the three-year span in prior reports.
Which residents are included in the calculation of a program's pass rate?
Candidates are included in the computation of a program pass rate if they meet all the following conditions:
1. They were first-time takers of 2014, 2015, or 2016 certifying examinations in general pediatrics (repeat
takers are excluded).
2. They completed residency training within seven years from the date of their first certifying examination.
3. The final year of training was in general pediatrics or a combined training program such as pediatrics and
internal medicine.
Programs with fewer than ten residents meeting these criteria are included if they were accredited long enough to
produce residents who took 2014, 2015, and 2016 examinations. However, programs with fewer than five
examinees across three years will only list the number of total examinees, so that the anonymity of examinees can
be maintained.
What are the limitations of the data?
Many factors influence a program's pass rate. Some are directly attributable to the program such as curriculum,
faculty, and resident selection criteria. Others relate to examinees and the examination and are beyond the control
of the program. Examinee factors include work habits during training and preparation for the examination, while
examination factors include the specific content sampled in any year's test.
Other limitations may also affect the precision of the data. First, programs with smaller numbers of examinees will
have less stable results. Second, if significant changes in the program have occurred within the three-year period,
pass rates may not fully reflect these changes. Third, data are presented at the title program level and may include
residents trained in affiliated hospitals/institutions.
