@ the Breeders’ Cup
Sprint: Limousine Liberal was straight up
game in his last start against the East Coast’s
top sprinter A.P. Indian and may have hit the
front too early. I love when horses improve
first-time making an equipment change,
which he did donning blinkers for the first
time. As soon as A.P. Indian appeared to
be going by, jockey Jose Ortiz pulled his
right reign over so Liberal could pick up his
competition. Liberal re-engaged and found
another gear to almost pull off the upset.
Trainer Ben Colebrook wasted no time
sending Liberal out to work a bullet 5/8’s in
59.2 with a huge gallop out in 111.1 and 124.2
signaling to me that he came out of his race
in excellent order. A slightly better timed ride
and decent post could put this one in the
winner’s circle at juicy odds.
Mile: The European shippers must always be
respected in BC turf racing. With that being
said, I’ve watched countless replays and
have come to the conclusion that this year
they did not bring a stand out performer. I
will look to the barn of Hall of Famer Shug
McGaughey and use his 5yo Ironicus as my
top selection. The BC Mile pace should be
hot for his closing kick and I love this horse
coming in second race off of a layoff. Shug
is lethal with this angle and loves to give his
horses a prep race before swooping in to
take the big prize.
Classic: No surprises here, California
Chrome is the best dirt horse in the
world and should once again prove his
dominance. After winning the richest
horse race in the world back in March, his
3 wins this summer and fall were glorified
workouts. He has the proven ability to
dictate the pace up front or sit right off
his competition depending on the post
position draw. I respect Bob Baffert but
Arrogate’s last race was almost unbelievable
to the eye and I’m not betting on a repeat
performance. I will let Arrogate beat me
off of a 10 week layoff and be singling
California Chrome in all multi-race wagers.

3 best selections for BC Saturday

@VPHanson
If much of a horse’s success can be attributed to being
in the right race at the right time, there’s a few on
Breeders’ Cup Saturday I’m looking forward to backing.
Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert has two solid
contenders in the TwinSpires Sprint, but it might be
his younger and less experienced entry, Drefong, that
proves best against his elders. A two-time Santa Anita
winner earlier this year, Drefong is capable of racing on
the lead or slightly off, but might be in a better position
to allow morning-line favorite Masochistic to wing
early and take first crack at him around the far turn or
entering the stretch. Freshened since late August, the
sophomore has a bright future ahead of him.
While his connections might have been a little miffed
at not making the Mile field, Obviously is arguably a
stronger fit for the race he did make – the Turf Sprint.
The California speedball proved to not have enough
staying power in four previous tries in the Mile, but this
about 6 1/2-furlong trip down Santa Anita’s hillside
course is one he’s familiar with (3-1-2-0 in three tries),
and course-and-distance specialists have generally
dominated this race since its inception in 2008.
The horse I’m most anxious to back, and I’ve been
waiting more than a year actually, is Ironicus in the Mile.
Injured prior to last year’s Mile, the gray with a monster
late kick was compromised by a slow pace in his final
prep at Keeneland, but should get an adequate set-up
on this fast-playing course.
Ironicus faces a sterling group of opponents, not
the least globe-trotting super mare Tepin, but in my
estimation he’s been the country’s best male turf miler
the past two seasons. With the right trip, he can prove it
Saturday.
