AIE has earned much recognition and respect as Australia’s leading educator for the Computer Games Development and 3D Interactive Digital Media industries. AIE has expanded to open campuses in Melbourne, Sydney, and two campuses in the USA. From Certificate II to Degree qualifications, AIE provides cutting edge, project based learning and hands-on training, which is nationally accredited and recognised through the Australian Qualifications Framework. VET in Schools (VETiS) at AIE Melbourne is a new initiative to assist secondary school students in creating pathways into the Games & 3D Interactive Digital Media Industry via highly specialist training. AIE offers a number of VET courses which are available for study by students as part of their VCE. These courses are the: • Certificate II in Creative Industries (Media) - 3D Animation Foundations • Certificate III in Media - Game Design Foundations • Certificate III in Information, Digital Media & Technology - Game Development Foundations AIE also offers VCE VET courses, meaning students will be able to sit an official VCAA examination allowing their study in this area to have a greater effect on their ATAR. GETTING CREDIT TOWARDS VCE & ATAR Successful completion of the Certificate courses can be used to gain credit towards students’ VCE either as Block Credit Recognition or as a direct contribution towards their ATAR if they have completed the scored assessed coursework and exam. The CUF30107 Certificate III in Media (VFE enrolment) will provide credit towards the VCE and VCAL. For VCE students, this program will not provide scored assessment, but may provide credit towards the VCE at Units 3 and 4 level. Schools are asked to verify the amount of credit available for students once VASS enrolments are completed. Where a Units 3 and 4 sequence is available, contribution towards the ATAR is subject to VTAC policy. AIE works together with High schools to provide the best possible program that will suit their needs. It starts off with an obligation-free meeting where we discuss what is on offer and what you require. Once an auspice has been agreed to, AIE provide all curriculums required along with assessments and handling of course administration for the school and teacher. Two teachers nominated by the school then attend training with AIE over 1 week to receive their qualification in order to deliver our content to their students. Student will also be assessed via observation and completion of work, such as tutorials, exercises and oral presentations. Students in the past have gone on to work in many areas including: • Film/Television/VFX • Advertising • Studio/Indie Game Development • Defence Simulations • Medical visualisation • Architecture and Town Planning • Simulations One of the major benefits of AIE’s implementation of VETiS is that the curriculum is designed around simulating a Studio Production Pipeline. This means graduates have a solid understanding of what it means to work in the industry. FAQ’s 1. Does my school have to do all three courses? No. Some schools find that there is a greater interest in the art stream of games rather than programming or vice versa. When this is the case, schools can nominate to auspice AIE to deliver one stream rather than both. 2. Who teaches the curriculum? Before starting the course, teachers attend an intensive week of training at our AIE Campus to prepare them for teaching the curriculum. This includes going over all content and making sure the teacher is familiar with all software involved in the course. 3. Do I need to create my own content for students? No. All course materials are provided, including learning materials, lesson plans, schedules, tutorials and a whole lot more. Occasionally some teachers will choose to take our content and deliver it in a way that suits them. But the entire course is designed so that, once trained, any teacher can simply walk into the classroom each week and get started straight away. 4. What if I need help or forget something from my training? AIE has dedicated support staff who work with you so that each lesson you can go into class fully confident on what you are delivering. If issues arise, our staff can be contacted by phone, email, or even video chat via Skype to answer your questions. 5. How many students are in each class? We recommend that student numbers are capped at 23 students per class, but often there are less or more than this. 6. So what’s the catch? There is no catch. AIEs goal is to provide engaging learning by using new technologies with relevant curriculums. We endeavour to make VETiS programs fun for both the teacher and the student. ACADEMY OF INTERACTIVE ENTERTAINMENT National Registration Code 88021 Page 5 CERTIFICATE II IN CREATIVE INDUSTRIES (MEDIA) CUF20107 3D ANIMATION FOUNDATIONS Overview The Certificate II in Creative Industries (Media) is intended to introduce students to the many career opportunities available for 3D artists, animators and designers. This course is run with a focus on 3D animation and gives understanding of the creative potential and application of 3D animation software in the games, film and visual effects industry. The Certificate II concludes with a production unit where students will use the skills learnt in the course to work together and produce a short animated film. Students start by planning an animation with concept art and storyboards, modelling and animating their designs throughout the production process and finish by editing sound, music and special FX into the final product. The course introduces students to the fundamentals of 3D animation including: • 3D modelling • Texturing • Animation • Short movie production • Character design • Environment design •Lighting •Rendering Projects PROJECT DESCRIPTION 3D Animation PreProduction Create storyboards and concept art for your short animated movie production. This course is run with a focus on game design, giving students an understanding of the game development workflow and preparing them for a future in various digital interactive fields using the Unreal 4 game engine. This course includes a game development production where students will produce a unique, playable game. Students start by designing a game, creating design documents and will require students to take on a roles such as producer, Level Designer, Character Designer, Visual Scripter and Tester. By the end of the module they will produce a fully playable, unique 3D game. In the first year, you will be introduced to the Unreal 4 game engine along with visual scripting, Photoshop and Maya. You will learn to create unique 3D art assets, gameplay elements and design game mechanics as you complete a fully playable game. During the second year, you will expand and build on these techniques as you learn how to create a custom character and implement it within the game engine to create a unique game to your design. You will also cover key topics including website construction, flash development and graphic design. In the first year, you will use HTML 5, JavaScript and JQuery to create games while exploring key programming foundations such as algorithm implementation and control flow. During the second year, you will expand and build upon the techniques you have learnt so far. You will work with C# and the .NET Framework to develop custom “shoot ‘em up” games along with other game projects. As you develop core programming skills you will also cover key topics such as building a custom web server, system maintenance and porting to a Linux system. The course introduces students to the fundamentals of Programming and IT including: • HTML5 & JavaScript • Screen Coordinates • Programming fundamentals • Collision detection • Debugging foundations • Problem Solving • Linear math Projects PROJECT DESCRIPTION Slime the Ghosts / Crate Clicker game An introductory game in HTML5 where a player uses slime balls to splatter ghosts that pop up in windows of a haunted house. Avoid splattering the innocent residents of the house though! Pong game The students have the opportunity to rewrite and customise their own version of the classic video game, Pong. Aside of the basic paddle and ball controls, students will have the chance to include various power-ups and ball movement effects. Online Presence This assessment allows students to create an online presence for themselves and their games through the development of a HTML5 website. Mad bomber game Help the player catch and defuse the bombs that the mad bomber is dropping on the city! Another classic game that the students will have an opportunity to create and customise. 2D Shoot-em-up game Applying the skills they have learnt to date, the students will program their most ambitious game so far: a complete shoot ‘em-up game in the style of the 1942 arcade hit from the 1980s! Multiplatform Port It is highly advantageous to have the game run on multiple operating system to cater to a wider audience of games players. Students will gain experience with installing and configuring a different operating system and learn how to modify one of their existing games so that it runs on the new operating system. Written Test All students are required to sit the final VCE VET examination. This course is designed to include dedicated sessions leading up to this test that revises and apply all they have learnt to maximise their chances of achieving excellent examination results.
