Why is it important
to use an Example?
By incorporating an Example in your essay,
you will show evidence of:
Ideas – Linking examples from your
experiences demonstrates your ability
to connect your ideas to the topic.
Voice - Your personality can shine
through when you tell a story in your
own personal style.
Organization – Using a transition to
introduce an example and telling the
story in a sequential fashion is a logical
progression from one point to the next.

Additionally, conversing has been simplified through
advancement of modern-day technologies. For instance, news
can be broadcast on television, within minutes of the event,
worldwide. On September 11, 2001, modern technology was vital
when the country needed to be alerted about four plane
hijackings that took place throughout our nation. All major
television networks and radio stations were able to report the
story as it happened and give us up-to-the-second information on
the situation. This allowed people thousands of miles away from
the attacks to take necessary precautions. Telephones also
became significant during this crisis as people frantically called
loved ones to ensure they were safe. Thus, communication is a
fundamental part of modern technology.

To begin with, having higher security may prevent a
school shooting. For instance, in the movie Pay it
Forward, a young teenager gets in a fight with a
“tougher” kid when trying to defend his best friend. The
tough guy pulls out a knife and takes the beloved life of
a 13 year-old. Though this is a movie, incidents happen
like this all of the time. One example would be the
horrible Colombine shootings. Clearly, these things aren’t
a one time deal, and it could happen to my school, that is
why more security could help prevent them.

Additionally, the principal shouldn’t allow on-line
courses to be implemented at our school because students
won’t experience as many fun encounters. For example,
when I was in fifth grade my class was so mischievous that
we drove our substitute teacher daft and had such a
hilarious time doing it she never returned. These precious
memories could never exist by taking all your classes online. In early America, when the Native Americans
roamed, children would encounter many activities in their
daily life, such as trying to learn to hunt, that could only
come from group encounters. Obviously, the moments in
life that you will always remember come from being with
others, not alone.

Equally important, culture can affect how someone dresses.
Recently, I read this book called The First Day of School. It
was about a young girl from South Africa named Kufasse Karni.
She had just left her small village near Capetown and was on
her way to Washington D.C. to live with her Aunt Mabel.
Kufassee was to attend a public school in her district. On her
first day of school, she went dressed in her traditional clothing.
While the rest of her class was dressed in a t-shirt and jeans,
Kufassee stood out majorly. Some of her fellow classmates
discriminated against her because she wasn’t wearing the
latest styles. On the other hand, some were fascinated by her
colorful dress and her strong accent. As you can see,
your heritage does have some influence on the way
you dress.

Equally important, people love to watch others humiliated
and tortured. As sad as this is, it is only the truth. TV
viewers find the embarrassment of others truly entertaining.
For instance, as I mentioned earlier, I was watching an
episode of “Survivor”, where their mission was to eat the
most larvae in order to receive a special prize. By watching
these people getting tortured by the grotesque taste, I get
wildly entertained and drawn into the television. The only
thing on my mind at this point (besides my uncontrollable
laughter) is what crazy challenge they would have to face
next. Clearly, TV viewers find the torture and humiliation of
people in reality shows pure entertainment.

To begin with, following rules can help keep you safe.
For instance, in the movie The Spyderwick Chronicles, a
young boy discovers a magical book that holds important
secrets to another realm. Despite the clear warning on the
book, he opens it anyway. The battle that ensues places
his whole family, along with an entire world of magical
creatures, in mortal danger. Though he does eventually
protect the book and save his family, this could have all
been avoided had he only listened to the warning.
Evidently, sometimes we have to understand that rules are
in place to protect us from harm.

Initially, the transition from Virginia to Florida allowed
me to break out of my shell. I was always the shyest
person in the class until I moved! When I enrolled in fifth
grade at Manatee Bay, I was overwhelmed by the size of
the school. I had never been in a school with 1500 kids.
Naturally, I was intimidated and being so shy I had a
hard time talking at all. Gradually, I realized if I was
going to make any friends, I would have to start talking.
Now, in eighth grade, I am very outgoing, and I only shut
up when I am in class! Obviously, moving to Florida
helped me overcome my shyness.

Furthermore, volunteering should be mandatory
for graduation because it is skill building. Some skills
gained include cooperation and kindness. A perfect
example of this is when my group of NJHS members
went to deliver household goods to foster care
centers to help the foster teenagers. First, we
arranged to have a drive at school. Students donated
all types of toiletries appropriate for teenagers.
Then, we sorted all of the donations and packed them
into boxes. Finally, we took the toiletries to the foster
center. Obviously, this service project helped me
learn more about cooperation and kindness.

Equally important, knowing a foreign language can
be very beneficial in anyone’s life. One such instance
is a story I recall my mother’s friend telling her. She
was raving about how her daughter, who spoke both
English and Spanish, got a job as a receptionist at a
fancy hotel. She then went on to boast that she was
the only one of the applicants who spoke Spanish,
which was the reason why she stood out from the
rest. Undeniably, knowing another language can
most definitely aid someone later on in life.

Equally important, leading a double-life is too
exhausting! Most teenagers would argue that it is fun and
exciting to be two different people. It could practically
double your social calendar, but it would be tiring. Take, for
example, Hannah Montana. Sure it is awesome to be a
superstar singer, but putting that together with living life as
a normal teenager means being super exhausted at the end
of every day! Imagine having to get up to go to school,
then singing and dancing in a concert for your fans. At the
end of the day, there is still homework to do. Obviously,
doing this everyday would lead to one tired teenager!

Furthermore, service hours should be required in
order to graduate because it enables students to learn
cooperation. One such instance occurred in a novel I
recently read. We Are All One by Marcie Dwanye
describes how we all live on Earth, and it is everybody’s
home. Because of this, we all must live together and
work to keep the Earth beautiful and healthy. This is why
cooperation is so important. “Two heads are better than
one!” Undeniably, service hours must be required in order
to instill the importance of cooperation in our generation.

First and foremost, reading is an essential part of everyday
life. Teachers always say we will use information for the rest of
our lives. Truly, how often will I need to use the Pythagorean
Theorem? Not too often after I finish Algebra. Reading is
another story. I will have to read every day for the rest of my
life. Even if I am a singer, I will need to read lyrics. In fact, it
doesn’t matter what I do with my life, reading is important! Just
the other day I was watching The People’s Court. The defendant
signed a contract she never read, and Judge Milian just looked
at her, completely exasperated, and said, “Listen, you have to
read everything you sign. You made a huge mistake, and now
you are going to fix it.” Undeniably, reading must be the most
important subject we learn in school.
