MEN’S BASKETBALL
Game
#8
Not Bad For A Freshman
Redshirt-freshman Jake Troyli is having a
solid indoctrination into Division I basketball.
The newcomer not only leads the team
in scoring with a 16.7 points per game
average, he is currently leading the Big South
Conference in field goal percentage. He has
canned 46-of-86 shots for a .535 field goal
percentage. Troyli is fifth in the league in
scoring and 15th in rebounds (5.6).
Looking Around The League
Although the Blue Hose are extremely
young, the team has multiple individuals at
or near the top of individual rankings in the
Big South Conference. Khalid Mutakabbir is
third in minutes played (33.57) while Chase
Holmes is ninth (31.86). Mutakabbir is also
10th in steals per game (2.00) and 11th in
assists per contest (2.86). Holmes is third
in the conference, draining 79.2 percent
of his foul shots. Jake Troyli is seventh in
defensive rebounds per game (4.43) while
Zach Faircloth is 14th in made three-point
field goals (1.57). Troyli is also seventh in
free throw percentage (69.2 percent).

the Blue Hose had 14 steals, establishing a
Division I school record in that category. PC
had stolen the ball for a school-record 13
times in the home opener a season ago in
the win over UC Davis.
More Top-10 Performances
In the win over the Cavaliers of Montreat
College, the Blue Hose offense began
clicking on all cylinders. The team canned
27-of-52 shots from the floor for a .519
percentage, making it the eighth-best game
in terms of field goal percentage for the
program in its brief Division I history. On
the defensive side of the ball PC swatted
six shots, just one off the school record at
Marquette a year ago.
Blue Hose Buckling Down
Against Montreat, PC allowed the visitors
to hit 11-of-25 shots in the first half for 44
percent. However, the defense clamped
down on the Cavaliers in the second half,
draining just six-of-28 shots for 21.4 percent
over the final 20 minutes of play, resulting in
a field goal percentage of just 32.1 percent
for the contest.

basketball team is a well-disciplined group
of student-athletes. Working hard on the
fundamentals of the game, PC has the thirdbest free throw percentage as a team in the
Big South Conference, canning 69.5 percent
of the charity tosses. The team also has the
highest free throw percentage in a single
game this year in the league, having hit eightof-nine shots at Furman for 88.9 percent.
Stealing Is Not Always A Bad Thing
In its second win of the season, the
Presbyterian College men’s basketball team
overcame an early deficit against Montreat
College thanks in large part to a tenacious
defense. In addition to forcing 18 turnovers,
The interesting stat of the night saw the Blue
Hose amass 50 points in the paint.
Troyli Tops The List
Redshirt-freshman Jake Troyli has done
something no other freshman has done in
PC’s short Division I transition. Troyli has
recorded double figures for points in each of
the first seven games. He netted a careerhigh 22 in the win over Montreat and has
scored at least 15 in each game with the
exception of the season-opener at Clemson.
Troyli leads the team with a 16.7 points per
game average.
First Time For Everything
With the youngest team in the nation,
head coach Gregg Nibert directed the Blue
Hose to a 14-point come-from-behind victory
in the final game of the Las Vegas Invitational.
PC downed Southern 71-69, outscoring the
Jaguars by 10 in the final 20 minutes of play.
Sophomore Chase Holmes led the way with
22 points while Jake Troyli had 18 and Travis
Smith chipped in a career-high 15.
Travis Takes Charge
True freshman Travis Smith came off the
bench against Southern in just his second
career game to score a career-high 15 points
on six-of-six shooting including two-for-two
from behind the arc. In a near-flawless
performance, Smith hit one-of-two from
the charity stripe. He also dished out nine
assists, which marks the most in a single
game in PC’s Division I history.
Talented Trio
As everyone knows, PC’s 2009-10 men’s
basketball team is extremely young. Despite
an 0-3 mark, the freshman class is very
talented. The squad has three young studentathletes that seem to be emerging. Redshirtfreshman Jake Troyli scored a career-high 19
points against Bradley in 35 minutes of play.
Khalid Mutakabbir does a lot of things well as
he netted 13 points, dished out six assists,
had three steals and grabbed three rebounds
against the Braves. Fellow newcomer Zach
Faircloth drained four-of-nine from behind
the arc for 14 points, nearly single-handedly
outscoring Bradley’s bench (the Braves held
a 16-14 advantage off the bench).
Stopping The Trend
The last time Presbyterian College men’s
basketball team lost its first four games, the
Blue Hose went 5-25 during the 2007-08
season, the team’s first in Division I. That
year, the team had an extremely young squad
and does again this year. Despite the youth,

Head Men’s Basketball Coach • 21st Season
The 2009-10 season will be head coach Gregg Nibert’s 21st
in charge of the Presbyterian College men’s basketball team. The
winningest coach in the program’s history, Nibert has led the Blue
Hose to 344 wins during his 20 years at the helm of the team.
Overall, PC has compiled a record of 344-248 during his tenure.
In his first season in the Big South Conference, Nibert guided the
Blue Hose to a .500 record, finishing the year 9-9 in conference play.
The squad put together some tremendous wins, including victories
over UC Davis, San Jose State and Army in non-conference play.
During the Big South portion of the schedule, Nibert’s team began
its history in the league by posting wins at Coastal Carolina and
High Point. The squad was on TV three times, including the Nov. 10
season-opener at Duke, which was televised by ESPNU. The game
marked the first nationally televised contest for any Blue Hose team in
school history.
Al’Lonzo Coleman was recognized as a second-team all-conference
selection for his tremendous effort while also garnering a place on
the all-academic team.
Nibert is the first men’s basketball coach in Presbyterian College
history to reach the 300-win plateau, an honor he reached during the
2005-06 season after becoming the first to accomplish 200 wins at
PC in the 2000-01 season. Chase Holmes picked up the Freshman
of the Week award aver scoring a career-high 24 points en route to a
victory over VMI in which PC held the Keydets to 38 points below their
NCAA-leading points per game average.

Rice University, 1979-81 — Assistant Coach
Presbyterian College, 1981-84 — Assistant Coach
Furman University, 1984-89 — Assistant Coach
Presbyterian College, 1989-present — Head Coach
During his 20-year tenure at Presbyterian College, Nibert has
compiled six 20-win seasons. His Blue Hose teams finished in the top
four in the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) regular season standings
14 times, winning the SAC Championship twice (1992-93 & 1996-97)
and the Food Lion SAC Tournament title once (1995-96). He has also
been named the SAC Coach-of-the-Year twice for his efforts (1993
and 1997).
Nibert is also the only coach in the history of PC basketball to lead
the institution to two different postseason tournaments; guiding the
Blue Hose to the NAIA National Tournament in 1993 and the NCAA
Division II Men’s Basketball Tournament in 1996, 1997, 2003, and
2006. Nibert is also the only coach in the history of the SAC to coach
a squad to the “Sweet 16” of the Division II Tournament. Even more
impressive, Nibert has seen 51 out of his 51 seniors graduate from
Presbyterian during his tenure.
Last season, Nibert guided the Blue Hose into their first NCAA
Division I season. Nibert led PC to its first ever win at the NCAA
Division I level on Dec. 1, 2007 when the Blue Hose defeated Big
South Conference foe Radford, 62-60, at the Templeton Center.
Overall, PC finished its first NCAA Division I season with five victories.
The Blue Hose won all five of their games at home to enter the 200809 campaign in the midst of a 12-game home winning streak, which
places them tied for the 14th longest active home winning streak in
all of NCAA Division I men’s basketball.
One year earlier in their final year in NCAA Division II in the 200607 season, the Blue Hose posted a 20-9 record to finish with two
consecutive 20-win seasons. PC concluded SAC regular season play
in second with a 12-4 mark and advanced to the Food Lion SAC
Men’s Basketball Tournament semifinals where they fell to tournament
champion and NCAA Division II Elite Eight participant Wingate.
In the 2005-06 campaign, PC compiled a 25-10 overall record
including a 10-4 ledger in the South Atlantic Conference, good for
a tie at second place in the league. The Blue Hose advanced to the
finals of the 2006 Food Lion/SAC Tournament, which earned them an
at-large bid to the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Tournament,
where they advanced to the semifinals.
In the 2004-05 season, Nibert led the Blue Hose to an 18-11
overall record and a tie for third place in the SAC regular season. In
addition, the Blue Hose advanced to the semifinals of the 2005 Food
Lion SAC Tournament. Nibert led the Blue Hose to a program recordtying 27 wins against nine losses in the 2002-03 season. The team
compiled a 9-5 mark in SAC play, good for a fourth-place finish.
In the Food Lion SAC Tournament, PC upset #1 seed CarsonNewman College 69-52 in the semifinals before falling 71-62 to the
#3 seed Lenoir-Rhyne College. The Blue Hose received an at-large
bid to the NCAA Division II South Atlantic Regional and entered the
postseason tournament as the No. 8 seed. In the opening round, PC
upset #1 seed and No. 13-ranked Columbus State University, 71-59.
In the semifinals, PC knocked off the #5 seed Shaw University, 77-58,
to advance to the “Sweet 16.” PC’s “cinderella run” through the NCAA
Tournament ended at the hands of #2 seed Bowie State University,
67-53, in the region championship game.

for 30 years and has
also been a NABC

Congressman.
Nibert has also established one of the largest basketball team
camps in the country over the course of his time at PC. The Camp
of Champions Team Camp is in its 19th year and has attracted
thousands of kids to the Presbyterian College campus.
Nibert, a 1979 graduate of Marietta College, began his coaching
career at Rice University where he served as an assistant coach
under Mike Schuler, who would later earn NBA Coach of the Year
honors with the Portland Trailblazers. In 1981, Nibert moved with
fellow Owl aide Butch Estes to Clinton, S.C., when Estes accepted
Presbyterian’s head coaching job. The Blue Hose would record a
57-35 ledger over the next three seasons, including a pair of 20-win
campaigns.
Nibert then moved to Furman University as a part-time assistant
coach under Paladin mentor Gene Davis. One year later, Estes took
Davis’ spot at the helm of Furman’s program and Nibert was shifted
to the full-time assistant’s post, a slot he would man until being named
Presbyterian’s 17th head basketball coach on April 26, 1989.
While a student-athlete at Marietta, Nibert, a native of Grove City,
Ohio, earned Most Improved Player honors during his junior season
and was named the team’s Most Valuable Player following his senior
campaign.
Nibert is married to the former Peggy Harling of Simpsonville,
S.C., and the couple has two sons, Shaun (19) and Van (15). Shaun is
a sophomore at PC, and Van is a sophomore at Clinton High School.
2009-2010 PREVIEW
There has not been a team like the 2009-10 Presbyterian College
squad in an extremely long time in the program’s history. The 200910 team, under the direction of head coach Gregg Nibert, will be
talked about throughout the nation this year. In addition to not having
any seniors on the team, the three key student-athletes from a season
ago are redshirting in order to benefit the program in the long run –
and in the team’s first season of postseason play eligibility.
Nibert and his staff knew heading into the recruiting process a few
years ago that they were going to redshirt the juniors on the team
in order to have the best chance to vie for a conference title in two
seasons. Due to that, this year’s team is extremely young but also
very talented. The team bodes one redshirt-junior, two sophomores,
five freshmen and one redshirt-freshman who will be in uniform the
first night of the season.
“We lost two senior starters from a year ago in Bryan Bostic and
Travis Sligh,” Nibert said. “Now we have three players redshirting.
Right now, we have just three that have had any college experience.
It may be the most inexperienced team in Division I and the most
inexperienced team I’ve ever had.
“However, for the future of our program, our freshmen will gain
valuable experience during the non-conference season which will
prepare us for the tough Big South play. All nine student-athletes will
play every game and how fast they adapt to the collegiate game will
depend on any success we have this year and for the future. It will
help the younger athletes for this season and next.”
The Blue Hose will count on three student-athletes that have been
around the program since last year in Kevin Davis, Chase Holmes and
Jake Troyli.
“We are really excited about Chase, Kevin and Jake,” Nibert said.
“Patience will be the key this year, but we see the light at the end of
the tunnel. We are anxious to see how everyone will come in and play
and see what they can do this year.
“We have to make sure we have no injuries. We have the ability
and the quickness where we will transition off turnovers and missed
shots, hoping to convert into fast breaks. If we don’t have an easy
basket, we will be a ball control type team. We may not have the
inside play, but we have several different guys that can drive and will
post up guards.”
GUARD
Sophomore Kevin Davis, who saw limited time a year ago, will
be looked to in order to fill the shoes left by Pierre Miller, who is
redshirting. Davis steadily improved over the summer and will take
over the reigns this season. Despite not taking many shots, he saw
time in 25 contests, hitting 41 percent of his jumpers.
“Kevin is a true point guard,” Nibert said. “He is a vocal leader and
is one of the hardest workers we have. He knows how to get us in our
offense and will help out our defense.” True freshman Travis Smith did it all at Porter-Guad School. A
four-year all-state selection out of Johns Island, S.C., Smith averaged
16.5 points, seven assists and five rebounds as a senior. A two-time

team MVP, Smith also played against tough competition with his Team
Georgia Elite AAU squad.
“Travis is a 6-3 point guard who can really defend,” Nibert said.
“He can get to and finish around the basket. Travis can shoot a
tremendous pull-up jumper and knock down the three-point shot. He is
a good fit for us.”
At the two-guard spot, the Blue Hose will turn to a pair of
freshmen. Rookie Khalid Mutakabbir and Zach Faircloth will each see
prolonged playing time as Josh Johnson redshirts this season.
Mutakabbir, who comes from Peachtree Ridge H.S., led his team
to the Sweet 16 as a senior. During his senior campaign, Mutakabbir
averaged 20 points, eight rebounds and four assists. The third
student-athlete to score at least 1,000 points in the school’s history,
Mutakabbir was selected to the Deep South Classic all-tourney boys
team.
“Khalid is one of the hardest workers and is in the best shape of
any freshman ever to come in here,” Nibert said. “He has good size
and can take the ball to the basket. Khalid can score a variety of
ways and with his athleticism, he can be one of our better defensive
players.
Faircloth led Terry Sanford H.S. to the state championship game
his senior campaign. A McDonald’s All-American nominee, Faircloth
was a first-team all-state selection and earned a spot in on the East
all-star team.
“Zach is one of the top leapers on the team,” Nibert said. “In
addition to his 40-inch vertical, Zach is one of the fastest players on
the squad. His athleticism and quickness is something we haven’t had
in a while. He can use his jumping ability and speed in order to finish
strong around the basket.”
WING
Sophomore Chase Holmes returns from a solid freshman
campaign that saw him earn Big South New Balance Freshman of the
Week accolades after erupting for a career-high 24 points in the win
over VMI a year ago. An explosive student-athlete, Holmes finished his
freshman season in fine style, scoring in double figures in each of his
last four games.
“Chase lost six pounds since last season and is in twice as good
Walt
Allen
of shape as he was a year ago,” Nibert said. “He can really take the
ball to the basket with anyone in the league. This year, we will give
him more freedom because of his strength and his ability to get to the
rim. We need to get him the ball in the open floor. With an improved
outside shot, he has the ability to keep people honest.”
Mutakabbir will also see some time at the wing position.
FORWARD
Redshirt-junior Walt Allen sat out a year ago and is looking to
make an impact this season. Throughout his first two seasons prior
to sitting out, Allen saw playing time in 44 games. He connected on
35.4 percent of his three-point shots while averaging 3.1 points per
game.
“We are really glad that he’s back and ready to go,” Nibert said.
“He is one of our smartest players and is a great passer, shooter
and understands the game. Walt is one of our most experienced
players and has been around the program for four years. We need his
enthusiasm, passion and leadership. He is one of our captains this
year.”
Also seeing time at the power forward spot will be Troyli. At
Pinellas Park H.S., he was a North District all-star selection. A secondteam all-state honoree, he averaged 15 points, nine rebounds and 3.5
blocks per game.
“Jake really has tremendous athleticism,” Nibert said. “He has
great skills and can guard three positions because of his size and
quickness. He will be called upon and help us in scoring. We need him
to take some of the scoring load on his shoulders.”
Ryan Hargrave is a versatile student-athlete from Alexander Central
H.S. Hargrave averaged 21 points and 12 rebounds per game as a
senior. With a terrific nose for the ball, he established a school record
with 377 rebounds his senior campaign while netting a single-season
record 579 points a year ago. An excellent scorer, Hargrave netted
1,466 points for his career.
“Ryan can post up and score at the basket,” Nibert said. “He can
shoot the three and is a great passer. With good all-around skills, he
could be a good post defender and rebounder.”
Jay Reynolds brings a lot of size to the program. At 6’10, 250
lbs., he tallied 14.9 points and 9.8 rebounds as a senior at Maryville
H.S. A two-time all-region honoree, Reynolds earned all-district honors
for his sophomore campaign.
“Jay is a really hard worker,” Nibert said. “He has the body of
someone we have not had in the program in a while. He will be a
great defensive post player. He can use either hand and can play
good defense. We will be looking for Jay to be a rebounder and
screener for us. He will also get some baskets for us when running
the floor.”
SCHEDULE
Despite not having their five starters from a season ago, the Blue
Hose will face arguably its most demanding schedule in addition to
one of the most challenging in the Big South and in the country.
“We are playing a tremendous amount of high-caliber teams,”
Nibert said. “We play teams from the Big 10. We also play the
defending national champion in North Carolina as well as former
NCAA Champion Florida.
“We will start the season at Clemson while also playing Marquette
from the BIG EAST. Our tough non-conference schedule will prepare
us for our Dec. 3 game against High Point and the rest of the Big
South games that follow.”

YEAR-BY-YEAR RECORDS
The Blue Hose have a tremendous coaching tradition with
some of the finest coaches in the profession having spent
some time in Clinton, S.C.
In fact, one of the premier coaches in the history of college
basketball began his head coaching career at PC.
Norman Sloan coached the Blue Hose from 1951-55 after a
stellar playing career at North Carolina State. Sloan guided PC
to an 89-41 mark in his time as the Blue Hose mentor, leaving
the school to take over at The Citadel.
The Citadel was just one of three more coaching stops for
Sloan after PC as he also helmed the Florida program twice
and the NC State program.
During his time as the coach at his alma mater is where
he truly made a name for himself as he led the Wolfpack to
three ACC titles (1970, 1973 and 1974) and one National
Championship in the 1973-74 season. NC State en route to
their national crown defeated UCLA in the semifinal round of
the NCAA Tournament to end the school’s seven-year National
Championship run.
Sloan, who was known as “Stormin’ Norman,” finished his
coaching career with a won-loss record of 627-395.
Lonnie McMillan, who brought the T-Formation to the South
in football as the Blue Hose head football coach, showed
his overall coaching prowess as he led the Blue Hose men’s
basketball program to 128 wins during his time in charge.
Before leaving to take over the Furman program and lead
it to new heights, Butch Estes acquired 92 wins as the head
coach of the Blue Hose and led the 1983-84 Blue Hose squad
to a 25-6 mark.
Greg Blatt left PC with the highest winning percentage in
program history, leading the Blue Hose to an 89-35 record
during his time which left him as the only head coach in school
history with an all-time winning percentage over .700 at .718.
Now in his 21st season in charge of the Blue Hose
basketball program, Gregg Nibert has become the standard by
which all other Blue Hose head coaches will be judged in the
future.
Nibert is the only coach in program history to lead the
school to over 300 wins (344) and he is the first Blue Hose
mentor to coach a PC men’s basketball squad at the NCAA
Division I level.
