Supporting people with Dementia Policy

POLICY ON SUPPORTING PEOPLE WITH
DEMENTIA
Some people develop dementia when they get older.
Dementia affects a person’s brain.
It can cause them to forget things and to get confused.
Alzheimer’s is a type of dementia.
If I have Down’s Syndrome and am over 35 years of age,
KARE will ask me if I would like to have an assessment.
The assessment will look at the things I can do now. I can
have another assessment in a few years time.
The assessment will show any changes in the things I
can do. It will help show if I might be getting dementia.
If I am worried that I am developing dementia I can ask
staff in KARE to:
 Explain to me and my family what might be happening
to me
 Offer me an assessment for dementia
 Tell me and my family how the assessment will work
 Talk to me and my family about the results of my
assessment

If I have dementia KARE will:
 help me and my family to understand what dementia
is and what it will mean for me
 work with me and my family to plan the supports I
need.
 support me to continue to do the things I usually do for
as long as possible
 support me to live where I usually live for as long as
possible.
If KARE are not able to give me all the support I need
they will work with me and my family to plan how I can
get the support I need.
This might mean I have to get support from other services
that are better able to give me the support I need.
