POLICY ON SUPPORTING PEOPLE WITH DEMENTIA Some people develop dementia when they get older. Dementia affects a person’s brain. It can cause them to forget things and to get confused. Alzheimer’s is a type of dementia. If I have Down’s Syndrome and am over 35 years of age, KARE will ask me if I would like to have an assessment. The assessment will look at the things I can do now. I can have another assessment in a few years time. The assessment will show any changes in the things I can do. It will help show if I might be getting dementia. If I am worried that I am developing dementia I can ask staff in KARE to: Explain to me and my family what might be happening to me Offer me an assessment for dementia Tell me and my family how the assessment will work Talk to me and my family about the results of my assessment The Picture Communication Symbols © 1981-2009 by Mayer-Johnson LLC.
