brawl - English with Ms. Kuh

BRAWL
Battle Royal All Will Learn
Socratic Seminar… to the
death!




Actually… Not really
But you will creating and answering questions
in a discussion/debate format
In groups, you will be creating 5-8 Higher
Order Thinking (HOT) questions in regards to
one (or two) chapters in Night.
Your questions may revolve around any of
the three following topics: Tone/Mood,
Theme, and/or Characterization
What are HOT questions?



You need to create questions which will
require analysis to answer, generating debate
and discussion between possible answers.
In the simplest terms, they are NOT yes-orno questions, NOR are they questions which
only ask for detail. They should generate
answers which require analysis!!!
We will go over some example questions
later in the presentation
This is a multi-day process!




Here is the breakdown:
Day 1 (Wednesday)- Intro and Begin
Generating Questions
Day 2 (Thursday)- Generate questions and
possible answers
You must email me your 5-8 questions
Thursday night before 7:00



Day 3 (Friday)- Receive Master List of
Questions and answer as a group.
Days 4-5 (Monday and Tuesday)- Finish
questions and prepare and rehearse as a
group (you are all responsible for knowing all
the answers to the finalized questions!)
Day 6- BRAWL
Sample Questions-What to do
and What not to do

What you SHOULD do:



What effect does the parallel nature of the 3
father/son relationships in the novel show about
human nature?
Why does Eliezer leave us with a final image of
him as a “corpse” AFTER his liberation?
What you should NOT do:


Is Eliezer’s relationship with his father good or
bad?
How many days do they spend in the cattle cars?
Day One



Get in groups of four. I am allowing you to choose your
groups so that you can coordinate better as a group for
practice purposes, etc.
As a group you will be creating questions in regards to
your assigned chapter
 The questions should focus on important ideas and
concepts, not impossible or ridiculous questions (like
what were the contents of their meals at the
concentration camps).
Your group will spend the entire period going over the
reading and finding questions to post on the BRAWL
sheet.
***YOU MUST CREATE AT LEAST FIVE QUESTIONS!
Day Two

Email me your group’s questions by tomorrow.
Please email me at [email protected]




You MUST email me by 7pm. Anything received after 7 will
be considered late and lose 20%
When you email your questions, include the name of every
person in your group. Also cite the page where basis of the
question is located. (Use the page in the new book)
You must ALSO write a possible answer for the question
that proves it requires analysis!
Everyone will earn up to 10 points for creating
appropriate questions. However, your group can
earn bonus points based on the number of
questions that you post that are especially good, or
end up using in the BRAWL.
Days Three through Five


You will receive the final list of questions on Friday.
You will have all period to work on answering the
questions (as well as the weekend)


Some groups split up the questions and some groups work
on them all together. However you will ALL be required to
know the answers to the questions (more on that in a
moment)
The questions should be completed by Monday so that
you can go over them as a group and practice not only how
you can answer the question, but how you can add on to it
if you are not the first to answer. (think about how you can
discuss)
Day Five-Prep Day



You will have this day to prepare your answers and
think about how to generate discussion.
Everyone will be required to know the answers to all
the questions because I will be drawing them out of
a hat! (May the odds be ever in your favor…)
Discuss how you can answer the questions as
completely as possible, but also how you can
expand upon it IF someone else in another group
has a similar answer!

Think about details you can elaborate on, quotes you can
pull upon from the book, etc. Do some rehearsals!
BRAWL




There will be 8 desks set up in the center of the
room. This will be your BRAWL ring.
There will be four rounds (since there are 4
people in your group)
Each round will be 10 minutes long, with 2
minutes to regroup after each round (to discuss
how you did and how you can do better)
I will randomly pick one person from your group
to come up in each round.
BRAWL


I will pick a question from the finalized list out of
a hat. Everyone in the ring will answer the same
question and add on, elaborate, or counter each
other’s discussion. You will talk for 10 minutes
and I will score as you speak.
When the timer dings, I will total up your score
for the first round and give you your score sheet.
You will have a chance to regroup with your
teammates and discuss how you did and how
you can improve.
BRAWL


Each round will progress in this fashion. If
you do not speak during your round, you will
not receive points for the round.
You will receive an overall team score as well
as an individual score for your discussion
during the round. Your team may do well if
one of your members does particularly well,
but if you are very weak, your individual score
will also be weak. Make sense?
