Tri-City Day School Family Newsletter January 2013 Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a fun and restful break because we have lots of exciting things coming up second semester at Tri-City – Kansas Day Chili Feed, Valentine’s Day Party, Parent/Teacher Conferences, St. Patrick’s Day Breakfast, Spring Break, Spring Party, Field Trips, Field Day, End-of-Year Carnival, End-of-Year Awards, Prom, Senior Dinner, GRADUATIONS. . . .WOW, it is going to be a busy semester! As many of you may have heard from your child, we had to say good bye to Jeremiah Walters at break. Jeremiah accepted a youth pastor position at Pittsfield Assembly of God in Pittsfield, Illinois. While we were very sad to tell him good bye, we wish him and his wife, Bre, the best! We are very happy to introduce our Tri-City families to our newest staff member, Darren LaKous, who began with us in December. Darren will be working with Mrs. Waters and Mrs. K. Amos will be taking over Jeremiah’s position in the Affective Room. The Tri-City family will also be welcoming two new students! After making some slight adjustments to the existing homeroom classes, both new students will be joining Josh’s homeroom. We are excited to get to know the new students! Thank you all so much for your continued support and your participation in your child’s education! Wishing you well, Gina Field Trips for the 2012-13 School Year Parents have mentioned in the past that it would be helpful to know what other field trips we are planning to have and anticipated costs for these outings. The following is a list of scheduled outings for 2012-13: January 18 – Roller City – $3.50 for skating, $5.00 max. extra spending money, lunch at CiCi’s covered by school February 22 – Derby Bowl - $3.50 and lunch TBA later April 17 – Sedgwick County Zoo - $5.00 and a sack lunch If you find yourself unable to pay for an outing, please contact us and let us know ahead of time so that payment arrangements can be made. It is very difficult to find out the day of the outing that someone needs help covering the cost of the trip. Remember that students must be in good standing both academically and behaviorally to attend school outings. Inclement Weather It is that time of year again, when the weather can change very quickly. A decision to close school due to inclement weather will be made as soon as possible and, in some cases, even the night before. If it is necessary to close school due to weather conditions, or for any other reason, the following media will be informed: Radio TV KFDI - 101.3 KSNW - TV3 KTHR - 107.3 KAKE - TV10 KZCH - 96.3 KWCH - TV12 KRBB - 97.9 (B98) KZSN – 102 Roller City/Cici’s Outing On January 18, 2013, we will have an outing to Roller City and lunch at CiCi’s Pizza for eligible students. We will leave Tri-City around 8:30 a.m. and return at approximately 1:30 p.m. We will need some help with cost for this outing. Each student will be asked to bring $3.50 which is the admission fee for skating and the school will cover the $7.00 cost for lunch at CiCi’s. Thank you in advance for your support on this outing! Picture Day - January 22 Individual and group pictures will be taken at Tri-City on Tuesday, January 22. Group pictures MUST be paid for in advance. You will have an opportunity to preview your child’s individual picture before deciding if you would like to purchase a packet. If your child is reintegrating to another school for more than one block, he/she will not be at school in time to get his/her picture taken. We are very sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. Steve’s Gator Aids Helping your Children at Home Language Skills A child’s progress in the development of language skills may have an impact on their success in school, their ability to interact with and communicate with others, and the way they feel about themselves. Over the next several months we will be highlighting suggestions to support language skills in the home, increase their vocabulary, and improve their ability to communicate. Below are ideas to help you get started: o o Read to your child, listen to your child read, and read together. Encourage your child to use full sentences. When your child uses short phrases, or single words, ask questions which will require your child to expand on the idea. HEALTHY CHOICES Have kids help in the kitchen. Beans are now listed in the “meat group” because they are packed with protein. Look for 100% when buying whole wheat. Eat foods from all five of the food groups. A helpful website for healthy eating is ChooseMyPlate.gov Many Types of Intelligence By Susan Woodcock Kruger, M.Ed From the book SOAR Study Skills Over the last 20 years, Dr. Howard Gardner (Garder, Howard. Intelligence Reframed: Multiple Intelligences for the 21st Century. New York: Basic Books, 1999.), Professor of Education at Harvard University, has been doing research on intelligence. He suggests that there are at least eight different types of human intelligence. Over the next several months, we will be looking at these types of intelligence. Body Smart (Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence) People who are gifted in this area generally enjoy sports, dance, or other areas of physical fitness. They are often referred to as “active” because they love to move! They learn best through movement and hands-on activities. People in careers that enhance this intelligence include: Craftspeople, physical/occupational therapists, surgeons, inventors, professional athletes, actors, farmers, dancers. Music Smart (Musical/Rhythmic Intelligence) You do not have to be a gifted singer, composer, or instrument player to have talent in this area. You may enjoy music or have a strong sense of rhythm. You may learn best through songs, patterns, rhythms, and other forms of musical expression, or find yourself frequently tapping and/or dancing to music. People in careers that enhance this intelligence include: Composers, song writers, sound technicians, disc jockeys, instrument makers, music teachers, band directors.
