Kinetic Percussion — Music
About the Artist
Kinetic Percussion is a group of young passionate musicians intent on
sharing their love of music with the world. Its members bring a wide range of skills
and experiences to the table. Chris recently composed, directed, and toured a
children’s musical theatre show. Luke toured the United States for two summers in a
World Class Drum Corps. Lishan has participated in workshops and seminars with
some of the world’s best percussionists. Kinetic Percussion’s shows are dynamic,
varied, and educational, with some silliness and humour thrown in for good measure.
With an arsenal of unique percussion instruments of all shapes and sizes, Chris,
Luke, and Lishan are dedicated to engaging, entertaining, and inspiring audiences of
all ages.
About the Performance
We start with a groovy, showy rudimental piece featuring a number of snare drum stick tricks to get the audience
engaged. This moves into teaching and building an interlocking groove pattern to get everyone listening to each other
and doing call and response patterns. The next part is a fun game called "Pizza Party" that is about the connection
of movement and rhythm, in which the audience shouts commands that affect how the performers interact. Following
that is another theatrical and fun piece called "Natural Resources,” in which 2 performers methodically strike five white
strips while objects are placed onto the strips in constantly changing configurations. Once audience members
understand the rules they are invited to take over the established roles. Percussive delight (and sometimes chaos)
ensues! We end with a visceral showstopper called "Trio Per Uno," which is fast, intricate, and intense. It is sure to
leave spectators energized as one of the most exciting pieces of music they have ever heard.

About the Art Form
Percussion music in western society has only really flourished in the 20 th century. Before the 20th century, it was only
used in very specific situations or for very specific functional duties, such as military bands or as sound effects in the
orchestra. We hope you will learn to appreciate the many ways that music can be created and performed with
percussion, and that music is a very important part of our lives. We want you to leave our performance with the
knowledge that anyone can start playing, making, and working with sound. Creating music together is easy, fun, and
rewarding!

manner they choose. It can be vocal, on an instrument, or any other way they wish to make sound.
 The audience will call these commands to affect the performers’ interactions: “Hey!” (start dance and sound),
“Woah!” (change dance and sound), “See ya!” (switch performer roles) “Let’s get pizza!” (sound solo, dance stops
until “Hey” is shouted). The game ends when a performer says “Pizza Party!”
