Welcome to I AM NZ
During this lesson we will explore…
Aotearoa NZ in black and white
But before we start, let’s recap on what we
learnt during our last lesson…

Is a place where our family and
friends live.
Is home to Māori and Māori culture. Over the years its become
home to different cultures and is a great place to learn from one
another.
During our last lesson we learnt that Aotearoa NZ…
Is a place with snowy
mountains, calm lakes, sunny
beaches, fun bush walks, parks
and camp sites.
Is a place of festivals, museums, different
theme parks, wildlife parks, national parks,
and native plants and animals.
Lets start this lesson by exploring
Aotearoa NZ in black and white.

As an artist living in Aotearoa NZ there are many things
to be inspired by to make art.
Lets explore art inspired by Aotearoa NZ…
Esther Remnant
Esther is an artist from Nelson. She is
inspired by NZ native birds
Esther creates art of many native birds
such as Pīwakawaka (Fantail),
Kererū (NZ pigeon), Tui and Tomtit.
Each artwork shows shows the unique
features of these familiar friendly birds.

Esther’s artworks help remind us that
these native birds are special and
unique to Aotearoa NZ.

Pīwakawaka
Jono More
Jono More is an artist who makes art that
reflects love for the environment
Jono creates art showing native plants
such as cabbage trees or Ti Kouka.
Ti Kouka is a native plant Jono grew up
in the central South Island, where many
Ti Kouka live.
Jono’s art help remind us that these trees
and other native trees, are special to
Aotearoa NZ and that we should take care
of them.
Dwain
Aiolupotea
Dwain Aiolupotea is a Samoan artist who
grew up in Wellington.
Dwain’s carefully carved print works
reflect his culture, identity and childhood
memories.
Many of Dwain’s artworks show angels,
crosses, signs and symbols, and stars
mixed with Polynesian patterns.
Dwain’s art expresses his identity through
his faith, his culture or his childhood
memories.
Sam Farquhar
Sam Farquahar is an artist of Scottish,
English and Māori heritage (Ngāti Rāhiri)
and lives in Auckland.
Sam using different materials to make
her art. She has made art by printing,
painting and using fabric and canvas.
Many of Sam’s print artworks have bold
lines and colours to help show movement,
emotion and feeling.
Sam creates imagery that reflect a mixture
of Māori myth and stories from Aotearoa
NZ.
David Teata
David is a Cook Island artist who
creates art about his Mangaian Cook
Island heritage.
David became inspired by Mangaian
adzes while visiting the Museum.
Mangaian adzes were items only held by
chiefs and were used during ceremonies.
In David’s art we can see he has used
similar patterns and shapes inspired by
Mangaian adzes.
David includes many traditional pattern
and motif to show the uniqueness of
Aotearoa New Zealand.
