Distribution of Practice
• Massed practice – This involves large amount of repetition of the same
technique with no, or minimal, alterations between each one. For
example, the golfer hitting 100 balls on the driving range with the same
club
• Blocked practice – a technique is repeated a set number of times (ie a
block) then a different variation of the technique (or a different technique)
is repeated for a block. For example, the basketball player shoots a block
of 10 free throws, then 10 jump shots then 10 3-point shots etc
• Variable practice – a technique is executed once then a different
technique (or variation of the same technique) is practiced
• Random practice – as variable but the forthcoming technique to be
executed should be selected at random and not pre-prescribed.
